Climate warming can alter reproductive timing of species, yet the capacity for phenological adjustment in long-lived species, particularly marine ones, remains elusive. Using 17 years of monitoring data from one of the largest loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) populations, we investigated the environmental drivers of reproductive phenology and output. We found that warmer sea surface temperatures (SST) in both the feeding ground and the nesting ground advanced the start, peak, and end of the nesting season. We provide evidence for waves of arrival at the nesting ground, suggesting more turtl

The Siamese crocodile (Crocodylus siamensis) is considered one of the least studied and most critically endangered crocodilians in the world. Although few wild populations remain, more than 700,000 C. siamensis are held on commercial crocodile farms in Southeast Asia. Despite conservation concerns, many aspects of C. siamensis life history remain poorly known, particularly with regards to its reproductive biology. We studied nesting phenology, clutch characteristics, and other aspects of C. siamensis reproductive biology on crocodile farms in Cambodia during 2000 and 2001. Oviposition among ca

The struggle to explain the absence of evolutionary change in heritable, fitness-related traits of free-living populations has become emblematic of our ignorance of the evolutionary process in the wild. Yet while this 'paradox of stasis' has been the subject of much discussion, it is primarily identified a posteriori and rarely subject to direct quantification. We examined the evolution of clutch size in neighbouring populations of great tits (Parus major) before, during and after an experimental evolutionary perturbation. Interannual genetic changes in clutch size were directionally consisten

Egg production performance directly determines the economic viability of indigenous chicken breeding. However, the genetic regulation of multi-stage egg production traits remains difficult to characterize due to their complex and dynamic nature. Here, we integrated a multidimensional GWAS framework, including single-trait GWAS, multi-trait GWAS (MTAG), and longitudinal trajectory-based GWAS (TrajGWAS), to identify stage-specific and shared genetic effects underlying egg production traits in Wannan yellow chickens (WNY). Whole-genome sequencing of 354 WNY hens (10× depth) and quality control yi

The purpose of this study was to study the reproductive characteristics of the Nile crocodile and Siamese crocodiles after introduction into China since the time this occurred near the end of the last century. The data for the eggs and young crocodiles (recently hatched crocodiles) of two introduced species were collected at a Sanya crocodile breeding farm in Hainan. The characteristic variables of crocodile eggs were statistically analyzed, and the results indicated that: egg mass of the Nile and Siamese crocodile was significantly correlated with the egg length and width. Regression analyses

BACKGROUND: Hatching failure is common in the eggs of wild birds, yet its variation in relation to ecological and life history factors remains poorly understood. Understanding these patterns is essential for explaining reproductive strategies and evolutionary trade-offs in birds. RESULTS: In a comprehensive comparative study, we found that the previously recognized latitudinal decline in avian hatching failure rates is driven by a greater proportion of eggs failing in larger clutches at lower latitudes. We suggest that this pattern could reflect higher exposure to ambient conditions in larger

The effects of inbreeding on sperm quantity and quality are among the most dramatic examples of inbreeding depression. The extent to which inbreeding depression results in decreased fertilization success of a male's sperm, however, remains largely unknown. This task is made more difficult by the fact that other factors, such as cryptic female choice, male sperm allocation and mating order, can also drive patterns of paternity. Here, we use artificial insemination to eliminate these extraneous sources of variation and to measure the effects of inbreeding on the competitiveness of a male's sperm

BACKGROUND: Examining direct and indirect effects on reproduction at multiple scales allows for a broad understanding of species' resilience to environmental change. We examine how the fecundity of the mountain chickadee (Poecile gambeli), a secondary cavity-nesting, insectivorous bird, varied in relation to factors at three scales: regional weather conditions, regional- and site-level food availability, site-level community dynamics, and nest-level cavity characteristics. We hypothesized that earlier laying dates and higher fecundity (clutch size, nest survival, brood size) would be associate

Successful embryonic development depends on the interaction between genetic factors and environmental variables. Congenital malformations in sea turtles can result from extreme conditions during the incubation period, reducing hatching success and potentially impeding population recovery. We aimed to characterize the congenital malformations found in green turtle nests, determine their prevalence and severity, and understand their drivers during the 2022 nesting season on Samandağ beach on northern Mediterranean nesting beaches. A total of 2986 examples of congenital malformations were observe

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cancer is a disease that affects nearly all multicellular life, including the broad and diverse taxa of Aves. While little is known about the factors that contribute to cancer risk across Aves, life history trade-offs may explain some of this variability in cancer prevalence. We predict birds with high investment in reproduction may have a higher likelihood of developing cancer. In this study, we tested whether life history traits are associated with cancer prevalence in 108 species of birds.
METHODOLOGY: We obtained life history data from published databases and ca

We performed a long-term natural experiment investigating the impact of the diphyllobotriidean cestode Schistocephalus solidus on the body condition and clutch size (CS) of threespine stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus, its second intermediate host, and the growth of larval parasites in host fish. We tested the hypothesis that single S. solidus infections were more virulent than multiple infections. We also asked whether the metrics of mean and total parasite mass (proxies for individual and total volume, respectively) were consistent with predictions of the resource constraints or the life hi

Clutch length is a key determinant of reproductive efficiency in geese and strongly positively correlates with egg production. We recorded daily egg production in 280 individually housed Zi geese, calculated clutch-related indices, and selected 12 geese to form long-clutch (LC) and short-clutch (SC) groups for ovarian transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic analyses. The results showed that egg number, large clutch length, large clutch number, average clutch length, and average clutch number were significantly higher in LC than in SC groups (P < 0.0001). Transcriptomic analysis identified 8

The temperatures at which eggs of crocodilians are incubated plays an important role in embryo survival, rate of embryonic development and sex definition. The aim of this study was to assess the nest temperatures of an American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) population on the central coast of Oaxaca state in Mexico. The fieldwork was carried out from February to June 2018 at Palmasola Lagoon, Oaxaca. Ten natural nests of C. acutus were carefully excavated to determine clutch size. When putting the eggs back in the nests, we placed a data logger in the center of the egg mass to determine the tem

Genetic incompatibilities contribute to reproductive isolation between many diverging populations, but it is still unclear to what extent they play a role if divergence happens with gene flow. In contact zones between the "Crab" and "Wave" ecotypes of the snail Littorina saxatilis, divergent selection forms strong barriers to gene flow, while the role of post-zygotic barriers due to selection against hybrids remains unclear. High embryo abortion rates in this species could indicate the presence of such barriers. Post-zygotic barriers might include genetic incompatibilities (e.g. Dobzhansky-Mul

Incubation temperature is an important aspect in terms of biological performance among crocodiles, and several controlled experiments have demonstrated a significant relationship between incubation temperature, success in hatching and survival of hatchlings. However, a few studies have tested these relationships in the wild. The objective of this study was to determine the relationship of nest characteristics and environment (hatch year, nest basal area and height, clutch size, distance to shore line, and vegetation cover), to incubation temperature and hatching success among Morelet's crocodi

Chinavia longicorialis (Breddin) is recorded only in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay on host plants of at least three different families. Adults and nymphs were reared under standard controlled conditions (24 +/- 1 degrees C; 70 +/- 10% RH; 12hL:12hD), and fed on green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). Eggs and first instars of C. longicorialis are very similar to those of other species of Chinavia; however, the presence of orange maculae at the thoracic pleura is exclusive of first instars of C. longicorialis. Third to fifth instars have abdominal maculae divided by pseudo-sutures, a diagnostic fe

Transformations in morphology, physiology and behaviour along the mammalian stem lineage were accompanied by profound modifications to reproduction and growth, including the emergence of a reproductive strategy characterized by high maternal investment in a small number of offspring1,2 and heterochronic changes in early cranial development associated with the enlargement of the brain3. Because direct fossil evidence of these transitions is lacking, the timing and sequence of these modifications are unknown. Here we present what is, to our knowledge, the first fossil record of pre- or near-hatc

Reproductive effort involves trade-offs among offspring and with homeostasis. In birds, a crucial parental investment concerns the allocation of resources to each egg. Variation in egg investment has led to the development of hypotheses regarding whether females favor the eldest nestlings ("brood reduction") or distribute resources more evenly ("brood survival"). Alternative explanations include the maturation of reproductive organs and trade-offs with environmental constraints, such as thermoregulation. The earliest tests of these hypotheses relied on the deviation of the last egg's volume fr

Hosts species for multi-host pathogens show considerable variation in the species' reservoir competence, which is usually used to measure species' potential to maintain and transmit these pathogens. Although accumulating research has proposed a trade-off between life-history strategies and immune defences, only a few studies extended this to host species' reservoir competence. Using a phylogenetic comparative approach, we studied the relationships between some species' life-history traits and reservoir competence in three emerging infectious vector-borne disease systems, namely Lyme disease, W

When infected with a pathogen, a host may respond with an acute phase response to increase its chances of survival. Previous research shows that one fundamental component of the acute phase response, adjustments of body temperature, may differ depending on ambient temperature, social settings and energy availability. However, we do not know much about how such a response is modulated during work-intensive reproductive events. Therefore, we subjected breeding female blue tits Cyanistes caeruleus that were raising experimentally enlarged broods or normal-sized broods to a mimicked bacterial infe
