Synthesis of hydroxy sodalite from coal fly ash using waste industrial brine solution.

The effect of using industrial waste brine solution instead of ultra pure water was investigated during the synthesis of zeolites using three South African coal fly ashes as Si feedstock. The high halide brine was obtained from the retentate effluent of a reverse osmosis mine water treatment plant. Synthesis conditions applied were; ageing of fly ash was at 47 ° C for 48 hours, and while the hydrothermal treatment temperature was set at 140 ° C for 48 hours. The use of brine as a solvent resulted in the formation of hydroxy sodalite zeolite although unconverted mullite and hematite from the fl

Evaluation of leachates from coal refuse blended with fly ash at different rates.

There is great interest in returning coal combustion products to mining sites for beneficial reuse as liming agents. A column study examined the effects of blending two coal fly ashes with an acid-forming coal refuse (4% pyritic S). Both fly ashes were net alkaline, but had relatively low neutralizing capacities. One ash with moderate alkalinity (CRF) was bulk blended with coal refuse at 0, 20, and 33% (w/w), while another lower alkalinity ash (WVF) was blended at 0, 5, 10, 20, and 33% (w/w). The columns were leached (unsaturated) weekly with 2.5 cm of simulated precipitation for >150 wk. Wher

Intratracheal instillation of coal and coal fly ash particles in mice induces DNA damage and translocation of metals to extrapulmonary tissues.

Continuous exposure to coal mining particles can cause a variety of lung diseases. We aimed to evaluate the outcomes of exposure to detailed characterized coal and coal fly ash (CFA) particles on DNA, lung and extrapulmonary tissues. Coal samples (COAL11 and COAL16) and CFA samples (CFA11 and CFA16) were included in this study. Intending to enhance the combustion process COAL16 was co-fired with a mixture of fuel oil and diesel oil, producing CFA16. Male BALB/c mice were intratracheally instilled with coal and CFA particles. Measurements were done 24h later. Results showed significant rigidity

Carbon-enriched coal fly ash as a precursor of activated carbons for SO2 removal.

Carbon-enriched coal fly ash was evaluated in this work as a low-cost adsorbent for SO2 removal from stack gases. The unburned carbon in coal fly ash was concentrated by mechanical sieving and vegetal oil agglomeration. The carbon concentrates were activated with steam at 900 degrees C in order to develop porosity onto the samples. The performance of these samples in the SO2 abatement was tested in the following conditions: 100 degrees C, 1000 ppmv SO2, 5% O2, 6% water vapor. A good SO2 removal capacity was shown by some of the studied samples that can be related to their textural properties.

Effects of sediment containing coal ash from the Kingston ash release on embryo-larval development in the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas (Rafinesque, 1820).

The largest environmental release of coal ash in US history occurred in December 2008 with the failure of a retention structure at the Tennessee Valley Authority Kingston Fossil Fuel Plant in East Tennessee. A byproduct of coal-burning power plants, coal ash is enriched in metals and metalloids such as selenium and arsenic with known toxicity to fish embryonic and larval life stages. The early development of fish embryos and larvae during contact exposures to river bottom sediments containing up to 78 % coal ash from the Kingston spill was examined in 7-day laboratory tests with the fathead mi

Numerical evaluation of the use of granulated coal ash to reduce an oxygen-deficient water mass.

Granulated coal ash (GCA), which is a by-product of coal thermal electric power stations, effectively decreases phosphate and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) concentrations in the pore water of coastal marine sediments. In this study, we developed a pelagic-benthic coupled ecosystem model to evaluate the effectiveness of GCA for diminishing the oxygen-deficient water mass formed in coastal bottom water of Hiroshima Bay in Japan. Numerical experiments revealed the application of GCA was effective for reducing the oxygen-deficient water masses, showing alleviation of the DO depletion in summer increased

The multiple value characteristics of fly ash from Indian coal thermal power plants: a review.

Coal-powered thermal plants are the primary source of energy production around the globe. More than half (56.89%) of the Indian power plants use coal for power production. Coal burning in power plants results in coal combustion residuals, which contain coal fly ash (CFA) that is recognized as principle by-product. CFA is difficult to characterize due to its broad compositional variation. Hence, the present article summarizes the various physical, chemical, mineralogical, and petrological characterizations of CFA to its use in different applications. Indian coal thermal power plants are found t

Utilizing a granulated coal bottom ash and oyster shells for nutrient removal in eutrophic sediments.

Various in-situ capping materials have been studied to remediate contaminated sediments for sustaining a healthy ecosystem in a coastal area. We developed Granulated coal bottom ash and oyster shells (GBO) with different mixing ratios of OS. Pyrolyzed and grounded coal bottom ash and oyster shells were used to produce GBO, which the main chemical elements were analogous to cement. The nutrient-removal abilities of GBO were evaluated through long-term mesocosm experiments. It was found that GBO was an effective in-situ capping material for remediation of eutrophic coastal sediments, decreasing

Impacts of coal ash on methylmercury production and the methylating microbial community in anaerobic sediment slurries.

Mercury (Hg) associated with coal ash is an environmental concern, particularly if the release of coal ash to the environment is associated with the conversion of inorganic Hg to methylmercury (MeHg), a bioaccumulative form of Hg that is produced by anaerobic microorganisms. In this study, sediment slurry microcosm experiments were performed to understand how spilled coal ash might influence MeHg production in anaerobic sediments of an aquatic ecosystem. Two coal ash types were used: (1) a weathered coal ash; and (2) a freshly collected, unweathered fly ash that was relatively enriched in sulf

An in-Context Learning Framework for Small-Sample Coal Ash Quantification via Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy.

The combination of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and machine learning provides a rapid approach for coal ash quantification. However, in practical coal preparation plants, calibration samples are often limited, and ash contents are usually confined to a narrow range, making reliable quantitative modeling difficult. To address this issue, we propose a structured spectral in-context learning framework for small-sample coal ash quantification. Unlike conventional methods that rely on task-specific iterative parameter optimization, the proposed framework performs downstream inference

A machine learning approach for significant utilization of high-ash Indian coals by metal chloride modification.

A continuous and dependable energy supply is essential for maintaining a nation's economic stability. Globally, coal ranks as the second largest fossil fuel resource after oil and gas, leading to the establishment of coal-fired power infrastructure. Nonetheless, the pyrolysis and "burn-out" reactions of High-ash coal impose fundamental limitations that hinder its efficient use and exacerbate environmental degradation. Coal pyrolysis processes is significantly influenced by numerous experimental factors, including the, chemical concentration, operating temperature, process time. A significant w

Effect of sediment deposition on phosphate and hydrogen sulfide removal by granulated coal ash in coastal sediments.

Granulated coal ash (GCA) is a strong in-situ capping material for removing PO4-P and H2S-S in contaminated coastal sediments. Although GCA performance is weakened by sediment deposition, related research is rare. To evaluate sediment deposition effects on PO4-P and H2S-S removal by GCA, GCA was placed on the top of sediment (C-GCA), was partially mixed with sediment (M-GCA), and was fully covered by sediment (N-GCA). Effective PO4-P and H2S-S removal from sediments occurred in the order of C-GCA > M-GCA > N-GCA. C-GCA and M-GCA significantly decreased PO4-P and H2S-S concentrations by 84- 90%

Geochemical fractionation of hazardous elements in fresh and drilled weathered South African coal fly ashes.

The chemical reactions of dry-disposed ash dump, ingressed oxygen, carbon dioxide, and infiltrating rainwater affect mineralogical transformation, redistribution, and migration of chemical species. Composite samples of weathered coal fly ash taken at various depths and fresh coal fly ash were examined using organic petrographic, X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence techniques, and successive extraction procedures. Results obtained show relative enrichment of glass, Al-Fe-oxides, calcite, and tridymite in the weathered CFA, but the fresh CFA is enriched in mullite, inertinite, maghemite, and e

Experimental and modeled analysis of contaminant mobility in coal fly ash landfills under continuous rainfall regimes.

In China, a significant amount of coal fly ash is stored or used for landfill reclamation. The contaminants in coal fly ash (CFA) leachate can cause regional soil and groundwater contamination during long-term storage. This paper focuses on a coal gangue comprehensive utilisation power plant in Fenyang City, Shanxi Province, China, where the leaching characteristics of CFA were investigated by leaching tests. Laboratory-scale long-term soil column leaching tests and long-term ash column leaching tests were conducted using compacted soil and compacted CFA, respectively, to simulate contaminant

Possibility of removing cadmium pollution from the environment using a newly synthesized material coal fly ash.

Coal fly ash (FA) is a solid waste produced in coal combustion. This study focused on the removal of Cd2+ from wastewater by a newly synthesized adsorbent material, the low-temperature and sodium hydroxide-modified fly ash (SHM-FA). The SEM and BET analyses of SHM-FA demonstrated that the adsorbent was porous and had a huge specific surface area. The XRF, XRD, FTIR and TGA characterization showed that SHM-FA has an amorphous structure and the Si-O and Al-O in the fly ash dissolved into the solution, which improved the adsorption capacity of Cd. The results indicated that SHM-FA has desired ads

The Effect of the Addition of Coal Fly Ash (CFA) on the Control of Water Movement within the Structure of the Concrete.

Studies were carried out to find a relation between the important physical property, i.e., water absorption and the main mechanical parameter, i.e., compressive strength (fcm), of concretes containing coal fly ash (CFA) in the amounts of 0% (CFA-00), 20% (CFA-20%), and 30% (CFA-30). The methodology of the water absorption tests reflected the conditions prevailing in the case of reinforced concrete structures operating below the water table. The microstructure of all materials was also assessed. Based on the conducted studies, it was found that both the fcm of concretes with the addition of CFA
