Human intestinal infection due to coccidia in Mozambique: two cases.

A case of intestinal infection by Cryptosporidium parvum and another of intestinal Isospora belli infection, both in AIDS patients, are described. The two patients presented pulmonary tuberculosis symptoms and watery diarrhoea. Modified Ziehl-Neelsen stain of stools gave a definitive diagnosis in both cases. They are the first reports of intestinal coccidia infections in AIDS patients described in Mozambique.

Studies on the life cycle of Cryptosporidium coccidia in experimentally infected chickens.

Experimental infections of 7-28-day-old chickens with Cryptosporidium oocysts isolated from spontaneously infected chickens demonstrated that the endogenous development of this parasite takes place simultaneously in the organs of digestive, respiratory and excretory systems and in bursa of Fabricius. It was demonstrated for the first time that the oocysts of Cryptosporidium are shed through the respiratory tract into the beak cavity. A novel rapid and simple method has been developed for the detection of oocysts. Its principle is the rinsing of the beak cavity. This method enabled to isolate t

[The incidence of coccidia of the genus Cryptosporidium (Cryptosporidiidae) in diarrheal diseases in calves].

In the period from March 1983 to June 1984, the occurrence of Cryptosporidium sp. coccidia in smears of gut contents and samples of excrements stained after Heine (1982) was investigated in calves at the age of 30 days, coming from 16 farms of central Bohemia. The oocysts of Cryptosporidium sp. were diagnosed in 68 calves (occurrence extensity 37.15%) out of the 183 dissected calves with the indication of digestion disorders and in 177 samples of excrements (extensity 33.71%) out of the 525 samples examined. The maximum occurrence of cryptosporidia was recorded in ten- and fourteen-day-old cal

Parasites of Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs) population. Part I. Coccidia (Protozoa, Apicomplexa).

Coccidia infection in Chaffinch population in Mazurian Lakeland was studied. Birds were caught in mist nets from June to September and droppings were collected after defecation. Prevalence of infection was high -80% of Chaffinches excreted oocysts of Isospora sp. Intensity of oocysts' production varied depending on the time of the day and therefore coccidia prevalence in Chaffinch should be best detectable in birds caught after midday.

[Newly established causes of diarrhea: the protozoan Cyclospora cayetanensis (Coccidia, Apicomplexa)].

UNLABELLED: Coccidia Cyclospora cavetanesis has been considered a saprophytic or accidental infection without special medical significance until 1984. However, epidemics of diarrhea first in Peru and later in USA. Haiti and Nepal have aroused interest in pathogenic characteristics of this parasite and diseases it causes. The study first deals with biological cycle of parasite development as well as clinical picture and treatment, diagnostics and epidemiology of this parasitic disease. CLINICAL PICTURE: On average the incubation period was 2-11 days with frequent stools (3 or more times a day)

Variations in extracellular vesicle shedding of Cystoisospora suis stages (Apicomplexa: Coccidia).

Cystoisospora suis, a porcine enteral parasite of the order Coccidia, is characterized by a complex life cycle, with asexual and sexual development in the epithelium of the host gut and an environmental phase as an oocyst. All developmental stages vary greatly in their morphology and function, and therefore excrete different bioactive molecules for intercellular communication. Due to their complex development, we hypothesized that the extracellular vesicles (EVs) cargo is highly dependent on the life cycle stages from which they are released. This study aimed to characterize and compare EVs of

Evaluating the Effect of Acetylsalicylic Acid in Turkey Poults Experimentally Infected with Coccidia.

Acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), originally trademarked as Aspirin, is a common nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used in human and veterinary medicine to mitigate pain and pyrexia caused by inflammatory processes. There is limited information on the effectiveness of ASA in turkey production. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ASA on turkey poults with induced coccidial enteritis. Two experimental trials were conducted. In both trials, the turkeys were divided into four groups: no coccidia + no ASA; no coccidia + ASA (NA); coccidia + no ASA (CN); and coccidia + A

Morphological and molecular characteristics of swine coccidia based on single oocyst isolation.

Swine coccidiosis is a host-specific protozoan disease caused by Cystoisospora suis and various Eimeria species, leading to diarrhea or subclinical signs in pigs. In this study, 3296 fecal samples from 55 farms across six provinces in China were collected and examined to determine the prevalence and molecular characteristics of swine coccidia. The single oocyst isolation technique (SOIT) and molecular characterization identified nine coccidian species, with an overall infection prevalence of 13.83%. Infection rates varied by locations, host age groups, and sampling seasons. Among the positive

A Coccidia-Specific Phosphate Transporter Is Essential for the Growth of Toxoplasma gondii Parasites.

Toxoplasma gondii is an obligate intracellular parasite that acquires all necessary nutrients from the hosts, but the exact nutrient acquisition mechanisms are poorly understood. Here, we identified three putative phosphate transporters in T. gondii. TgPiT and TgPT2 are mainly on the plasma membrane, whereas TgmPT is localized to the mitochondrion. TgPiT and TgmPT are widely present and conserved in apicomplexan parasites that include Plasmodium and Eimeria species. Nonetheless, they are dispensable for the growth and virulence of Toxoplasma. TgPT2, on the other hand, is restricted to coccidia

Serological evidence of arboviruses and coccidia infecting horses in the Amazonian region of Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Arboviruses and protozoans can cause neurologic disorders in horses. In Brazilian Amazon, several horses presenting signs compatible with disorders caused by these infectious agents have been observed. OBJECTIVE: To contribute to the knowledge of this epidemiological picture, we sought to construct a serological diagnostic panel for neurotrophic infectious agents in local horses. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 213 blood samples from horses were collected from 29 farms in three municipalities. Samples were evaluated and considered positive when they met the following criteria: t

House finches with high coccidia burdens experience more severe experimental Mycoplasma gallisepticum infections.

Parasites co-infecting hosts can interact directly and indirectly to affect parasite growth and disease manifestation. We examined potential interactions between two common parasites of house finches: the bacterium Mycoplasma gallisepticum that causes conjunctivitis and the intestinal coccidian parasite Isospora sp. We quantified coccidia burdens prior to and following experimental infection with M. gallisepticum, exploiting the birds' range of natural coccidia burdens. Birds with greater baseline coccidia burdens developed higher M. gallisepticum loads and longer lasting conjunctivitis follow

Proteomics analysis and protein expression during sporozoite excystation of Cryptosporidium parvum (Coccidia, Apicomplexa).

Cryptosporidiosis, caused by coccidian parasites of the genus Cryptosporidium, is a major cause of human gastrointestinal infections and poses a significant health risk especially to immunocompromised patients. Despite intensive efforts for more than 20 years, there is currently no effective drug treatment against these protozoa. This study examined the zoonotic species Cryptosporidium parvum at two important stages of its life cycle: the non-excysted (transmissive) and excysted (infective) forms. To increase our understanding of the molecular basis of sporozoite excystation, LC-MS/MS coupling

The transcriptome from asexual to sexual in vitro development of Cystoisospora suis (Apicomplexa: Coccidia).

The apicomplexan parasite Cystoisospora suis is an enteropathogen of suckling piglets with woldwide distribution. As with all coccidian parasites, its lifecycle is characterized by asexual multiplication followed by sexual development with two morphologically distinct cell types that presumably fuse to form a zygote from which the oocyst arises. However, knowledge of the sexual development of C. suis is still limited. To complement previous in vitro studies, we analysed transcriptional profiles at three different time points of development (corresponding to asexual, immature and mature sexual

Impact of dietary chitosan oligosaccharide and its effects on coccidia challenge in broiler chickens.

1. Two experiments were conducted, the first to determine the optimum inclusion of chitosan oligosaccharide (COS) in broiler diets to support growth performance, digestive functions, intestinal morphology, and immune organs. The second experiment evaluated the immune-protective properties of COS on broiler chickens during coccidia challenge (CC).2. Experiment 1 investigated the effect of graded dietary concentration of COS in the diets of broiler chickens using eight cage replicates for each of the six diets. A corn-soybean meal-based diet was used as the basal diet and supplemented with 0.0,

In vitro and in vivo effectiveness of essential oils against coccidia in Black Livorno chickens.

BACKGROUND: Coccidiosis remains a major challenge in poultry farming due to the drug-resistance phenomena in Eimeria strains and the possible risk of accumulation of anticoccidial residues in poultry-derived products. Essential oils (EOs) and their bioactive constituents are being considered for their potential role as alternative control strategies. The present study evaluated the in vitro efficacy of thymol, carvacrol, cinnamic aldehyde, eugenol, and a commercial EO blend (namely Energy Poultry, EP) against Eimeria spp., as well as the in vivo efficacy of thymol and EP (supplemented at 5 mg/

Pathogenicity of a strain of Trichomonas gallinarum in turkeys and its possible interaction with cecal coccidia.

The pathogenicity of Trichomonas gallinarum (TG) in turkeys and chickens was assessed in a series of four experiments. TG was shown to be resistant to freezing for a period of 1 hr at -20 C; birds administered an emulsion of previously frozen TG were readily infected. Young birds receiving this inoculum were more likely to be infected with TG in both ceca compared with birds administered TG emulsion that had remained at room temperature for the same length of time. In this and other experiments, birds infected with the parasite consistently produced a yellow frothy liquid in the ceca, as well
