From Collar to Coccyx: Truncal Movement Disorders: A Clinical Review.

BACKGROUND: Movement disorders affecting the trunk remain a diagnostic challenge even for experienced clinicians. However, despite being common and debilitating, truncal movement disorders are rarely discussed and poorly reviewed in the medical literature. OBJECTIVES: To review common movement disorders affecting the trunk and provide an approach for clinicians based on the truncal region involved (shoulder, chest, diaphragm, abdomen, pelvis, and axial disorders). For each disorder, clinical presentation, etiologic differential diagnosis, and "clinical clues" are discussed. CONCLUSION: This

Coccygeal Pad With an Anterior Flexed Coccyx: A Case Report.

Objective: A coccygeal pad is a nodular lesion in the sacrococcygeal area. It is a rare disease characterized by corneal thickening, the proliferation of collagen bundles, and an anterior flexed coccyx. In the English literature, 42 patients have been reported. Methods: We present a young male case of a typical coccygeal pad with an anterior flexed coccyx. Results: After resection of the nodule and coccygectomy, there has been no recurrence during the 6-month postoperative follow-up. Conclusions: Plastic surgeons should recognize this as a disease to be differentiated from gluteal skin tumors.

[Application of ganglion impar block in patient with coccyx dislocation].

Sacrococcygeal dislocation is a rare injury. The ganglion impar (also called the ganglion of Walther) is a single, small solitary, sympathetic ganglion located in the retrorectal space, anterior to the sacrococcygeal joint or coccyx. It provides the nociceptive and sympathetic supply to the perineal structure. Ganglion impar blockade is not a routinely used anesthetic and analgesic procedure in clinical practice. An elective intrarectal manuel treatment was planned for a woman patient with coccyx dislocation due to falling down from a chair 5 days ago. Ganglion impar block was performed with s

Bursitis of the coccyx in an adult with rheumatoid arthritis mimicking a sacrococcygeal meningocele.

BACKGROUND: Bursitis is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by the deposition of cholesterol, macrophage infiltration, and bursal wall calcification. Bursitis is, however, rarely found in the sacrococcygeal region where it may present as a space-occupying mass. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 64-year-old male with rheumatoid arthritis presented with 3 years' duration of difficulty sitting and walking due to a soft-tissue mass involving the coccyx region. Once the patient's MR demonstrated a cystic lesion with erosion of the coccyx, the patient underwent gross total resection of the lesion that

Disorders of the coccyx and sacrococcygeal joint: Etiology, diagnosis, and management strategies.

Coccygeal and sacrococcygeal disorders represent an uncommon but clinically meaningful source of axial pain and disability. Although coccydynia accounts for only 1 %-3 % of back pain presentations, symptoms can be prolonged and debilitating, particularly among women and individuals with elevated or fluctuating body mass. Underrecognition and diagnostic uncertainty often delay appropriate management, as coccygeal pain is frequently mistaken for lumbosacral, pelvic, or gastrointestinal pathology. This review synthesizes current evidence on the epidemiology, anatomy, biomechanics, clinical presen

Acute traumatic instability of the coccyx: results in 28 consecutive coccygectomies.

INTRODUCTION: Coccygeal instability includes hypermobility, subluxation and fracture-dislocation. Surgical resection is still controversial, with intractable post-traumatic coccygodynia being an indication to surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From 2001 to 2010, we enrolled 31 patients with post-traumatic coccygodynia (19 females, 12 males; mean age 31 years, range 21-47). Conservative treatment failed in 28 patients, who underwent surgical resection of the coccyx. Twenty-one were total, while seven were partial coccygectomies. At follow-up (mean 33 months; range 24-70), clinical outcomes evalua

Defecation pain and coccydynia due to an anteverted coccyx: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Defecation pain is a common problem with many etiologies implicated. Elucidating a cause requires a thorough medical history, examination and appropriate investigations, which may include endoscopy, barium enema, examination under anesthesia and magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography. Coccydynia is a term used to describe pain in the region of the coccyx, often due to abnormal mobility of the coccyx. Non-surgical management options remain the gold-standard for coccydynia with surgery being reserved for complicated cases. CASE PRESENTATION: This is a case of a 67-year-

Hemorrhagic rectal ulcer caused by a deformity of the coccyx complicated by normal delivery.

A 25-year-old woman delivered her first-born child weighing 3400 g by full-term normal delivery. Bloody stool developed 3 days after delivery. Colonoscopic examination revealed two linear ulcers parallel to the anal column on the posterior side of the rectal ampulla about 5 cm from the anal ring. Coagulated blood was detected at the ulcer bottom, suggesting the site of hemorrhage. Bowel rest in the absence of oral intake resulted in the disappearance of bloody stool. Three days later colonoscopic examination revealed improvement in the ulcer. There was no sign of constipation. A lateral pelvic

Laser acupuncture for refractory coccydynia after traumatic coccyx fracture: A case report.

RATIONALE: Coccyx fracture is an injury usually caused by trauma. In most cases, the fractures recover after conservative therapy. For refractory cases that exhibit coccydynia after more than 2 months of conservative treatment, coccygectomy is indicated. However, limited information about the efficacy of this procedure is available, and it is known to have a high complication rate. As such, other therapeutic approaches are needed. Here, we report our experience using another conservative treatment option, low-level laser therapy, to successfully reduce refractory coccydynia in a patient with c

Exploring the morphological characteristics of the adult coccyx: a computed tomographic study with clinical implications.

BACKGROUND: The coccyx exhibits significant anatomical variation in its morphology, vertebral number, and joint fusion patterns. These variations can influence the development of coccygodynia, a common yet often underdiagnosed cause of chronic lower back pain. Understanding coccygeal anatomy is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective clinical management. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on 107 lumbosacral CT scans (63 males and 44 females; age range: 18-84 years). The study evaluated the number of coccygeal segments, coccyx type (as per established classifi

Prominent and elongated coccyx, a new manifestation of KBG syndrome associated with novel mutation in ANKRD11.

KBG syndrome is characterized by short stature, distinctive facial features, and developmental/cognitive delay and is caused by mutations in ANKRD11, one of the ankyrin repeat-containing cofactors. After the advent of whole exome sequencing, the number of clinical reports with KBG diagnosis has increased, leading to a revision of the phenotypic spectrum associated with this syndrome. Here, we report a female child showing clinical features of the KBG syndrome in addition to a caudal appendage at the coccyx with prominent skin fold and a peculiar calcaneus malformation. Estimation of stature and sex from sacrum and coccyx measurements by multidetector computed tomography in Chinese.

The present study is an attempt to estimation of stature and sex from sacrum and coccyx measurements by multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in a contemporary Chinese population. Nine measurements for every sacrum and coccyx were taken from CT image of 350 Chinese. The sample is composed of 190 males and 160 females with an average age of 55 and 50 years, respectively. Discriminant function was used in sex estimation and regression analysis was used in stature estimation from these two bones. The stepwise analysis of all measurements yielded a sex classification accuracy rate of 84.9%. The
