Cognitive reserve and its contribution to predicting cognitive performance in multiple sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a prevalent challenge in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). Cognitive reserve (CR), a multifaceted concept has been shown to have a protective role against cognitive decline. This study explores the association between cognitive reserve as measured by Cognitive Reserve Index questionnaire (CRIq), cognitive scores, and patients' characteristics in MS patients. Additionally, we compared the predictive value of CR in cognitive function when measured by education alone versus the CRIq to examine the advantages of latter model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A to

The association between blood pressure components and cognitive functions and cognitive reserve.

OBJECTIVE: Hypertension exerts a subtle impact on the brain that is revealed by diminished cognitive function. This study aimed at evaluating the association between blood pressure components and cognitive functions and cognitive reserve. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 500 subjects from general population were evaluated. All neuropsychological tests were negatively associated with age; memory and executive function were also positively related with education. RESULTS: The hypertensives (HT) were less efficient than the normotensives (NT) in the test of memory with interference at 10

Development and Validation of a Cognitive Reserve Index in HIV.

OBJECTIVES: In the neuroHIV literature, cognitive reserve has most often been operationalized using education, occupation, and IQ. The effects of other cognitively stimulating activities that might be more amenable to interventions have been little studied. The purpose of this study was to develop an index of cognitive reserve in people with HIV, combining multiple indicators of cognitively stimulating lifetime experiences into a single value. METHODS: The data set was obtained from a Canadian longitudinal study (N = 856). Potential indicators of cognitive reserve captured at the study entry

Cognitive reserve and anosognosia in questionable and mild dementia.

Cognitive reserve (CR) theory posits that the clinical presentation of individuals with the same brain disease varies based upon premorbid variables (e.g., education, occupation, reading ability). Anosognosia (decreased insight regarding one's deficits) is common in dementia and has implications for safety, treatment, and caregiver burden. The current study examined the role of CR in anosognosia in individuals with mild dementia. Participants were individuals diagnosed with questionable or mild dementia (Clinical Dementia Rating 0.5 or 1) after neuropsychological evaluation. Anosognosia was me

Relationship between cognitive reserve (education), social cognition and negative symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Negative symptoms (NS) are a core feature of schizophrenia spectrum disorders, yet their relationship with cognitive reserve (defined by educational attainment) and social cognition remains underexplored. This study examined whether education predicts NS and whether this relationship is mediated by social cognition, specifically emotional or inferential theory of mind Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) vs. the Hinting Test. METHODS: A mediation model and multiple regression analysis were conducted within an ex-post-facto, cross-sectional design. The sample included 144 parti

[Predictive ability of cognitive reserve in the formation of motor cognitive risk syndrome.].

The cognitive reserve allows the human body to cope with the consequences of diseases and brain injuries. However, the predictive ability of cognitive reserve among patients with brain injuries and visual organ pathology regarding motor-cognitive risk syndrome has not been studied in practice. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of cognitive reserve in the prevalence of motor-cognitive risk syndrome after traumatic brain injury and eye injury and ophthalmopathology in old age. To achieve this goal, three representative groups of patients aged 60-74 years were forme

The relationship between biological sex, cognitive reserve, and cognition in multiple sclerosis.

OBJECTIVE: Cognitive impairment is a common feature of multiple sclerosis (MS), and its severity may be influenced by several factors, such as biological sex and levels of cognitive reserve (CR). The relationship between sex, CR, and cognition has not yet been fully investigated. Therefore, the present study aimed to explore sex differences in CR building and the effect of sex and CR on cognitive performance in MS. METHOD: 233 participants underwent the Brief Repeatable Battery of Neuropsychological Tests (BRB-N), the Stroop test, and the Cognitive Reserve Scale. The t-test was performed to c

Cognitive and Brain Reserve as Modifiers of Early Alzheimer Disease-Related Cognitive Vulnerability.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Maintaining cognitive function despite the presence of Alzheimer disease (AD) pathology is the foundation of cognitive reserve. Although the theory of cognitive reserve is strongly supported by empirical research, the field lacks standardized, validated methods for quantifying cognitive and brain reserve. We tested whether associations between AD pathology and cognitive function were modified by proxy measures of cognitive reserve (years of education, socioeconomic status; SES) and brain reserve (brain-predicted age difference, and a volumetric AD signature). We hypo

High lifelong cognitive reserve prolongs disability-free survival: The role of cognitive function.

INTRODUCTION: The association between cognitive reserve (CR) and survival with independence is unknown. We examined whether lifelong CR accumulation is associated with disability-free survival and explored the extent to which cognitive function mediates this association. METHODS: Within the Rush Memory and Aging Project, 1633 dementia- and disability-free participants were followed annually for up to 22 years. Lifelong CR including education, early-/mid-/late-life cognitive activities, and late-life social activity was assessed and tertiled. RESULTS: CR score was dose-dependently associated

Clinical neurovascular coupling through cerebrovascular reserve and cognitive function.

Neurovascular coupling ensures that cerebral blood flow (CBF) is proportionally matched to neural activity. In patients with chronic cerebral hypoperfusion, this may be clinically assessed through multiple regression analysis with cognitive function and the cerebrovascular reserve (CVR) as key factors. Cognitive function (based on neuropsychological testing using the Neurobehavioral Cognitive Status Examination [COGNISTAT]) and cerebrovascular risk factors, including CBF, CVR (as evaluated using N-isopropyl-p-123I-iodoamphetamine single-photon emission computed tomography with acetazolamide ch

Alzheimer's disease: etiologies, pathophysiology, cognitive reserve, and treatment opportunities.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) can be diagnosed with a considerable degree of accuracy. In some centers, clinical diagnosis predicts the autopsy diagnosis with 90% certainty in series reported from academic centers. The characteristic histopathologic changes at autopsy include neurofibrillary tangles, neuritic plaques, neuronal loss, and amyloid angiopathy. Mutations on chromosomes 21, 14, and 1 cause familial AD. Risk factors for AD include advanced age, lower intelligence, small head size, and history of head trauma; female gender may confer additional risks. Susceptibility genes do not cause the

Factors associated with cognitive reserve according to education level.

INTRODUCTION: We investigated distinctive factors associated with cognitive reserve (CR) based on education level. METHODS: Among 1247 participants who underwent neuropsychological assessment, amyloid positron emission tomography, and brain magnetic resonance imaging, 336 participants with low education (≤6 years) and 697 with high education (≥12 years) were selected. CR was measured as the difference between the predicted and observed value of cognitive function based on cortical thickness. Multiple linear regression was conducted in each group after controlling for age and sex. RESULTS: In

Network-Based Substrate of Cognitive Reserve in Alzheimer's Disease.

Cognitive reserve (CR) is known to modulate the clinical features of Alzheimer's disease (AD). This concept may be critical for the development of non-pharmacological interventions able to slow down patients' cognitive decline in the absence of disease-modifying treatments. We aimed at identifying the neurobiological substrates of CR (i.e., neural reserve) over the transition between normal aging and AD, by assessing the underlying brain networks and their topological properties. A cohort of 154 participants (n = 68 with AD, n = 61 with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), and 25 healthy

Cognitive reserve, cortical plasticity and resistance to Alzheimer's disease.

There are aspects of the ageing brain and cognition that remain poorly understood despite intensive efforts to understand how they are related. Cognitive reserve is the concept that has been developed to explain how it is that some elderly people with extensive neuropathology associated with dementia show little in the way of cognitive decline. Cognitive reserve is intimately related to cortical plasticity but this also, as it relates to ageing, remains poorly understood at the present time. Despite the shortcomings in understanding, we do have some knowledge on which to base efforts to minimi

Effect of cognitive reserve on cognitive function and cognitive deterioration in Parkinson's disease: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Previous cross-sectional work has suggested that higher cognitive reserve (CR) is associated with better cognitive performance and slower cognitive decline in Parkinson's disease (PD); however, these findings need confirmation in prospective longitudinal designs. The current study therefore examined how CR influences both cognitive function and the rate of cognitive deterioration in a longitudinal PD cohort. METHODS: This study utilized a prospective, longitudinal design and recruited participants from Tianjin Huanhu Hospital between September 2017-September 2019. PD patients were

Associations between cognitive reserve, iron deposition in the basal ganglia, and cognitive function in mild cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVE: This research aims to investigate the putative mechanisms underlying the association between iron deposition and cognition in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). It also seeks to analyze whether the relationship between cognitive reserve (CR) and cognition may be mediated by iron deposition. METHODS: In total, 109 individuals with MCI and 90 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled to evaluate iron deposition in the basal ganglia using quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM). The interplay of life satisfaction and cognitive reserve: implications for cognitive changes in old age.

BACKGROUND: Life satisfaction (LS), a widely used measure of psychological well-being, has been previously linked with cognitive decline, although sex-differences, as well as the interplay of LS and other established correlates of cognitive health – particularly cognitive reserve (CR) – remain unknown. Thus, we explored the sex-specific interaction between LS an CR for cognitive change over 15 years during aging. METHOD: For this population-based longitudinal cohort study, data from the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care in Kungsholmen (SNAC-K) were used. The sample included 1871 cogniti
