Cognitive science theory-driven pharmacology elucidates the neurobiological basis of perception-motor integration.

An efficient integration of sensory and motor processes is crucial to goal-directed behavior. Despite this high relevance, and although cognitive theories provide clear conceptual frameworks, the neurobiological basis of these processes remains insufficiently understood. In a double-blind, randomized placebo-controlled pharmacological study, we examine the relevance of catecholamines for perception-motor integration processes. Using EEG data, we perform an in-depth analysis of the underlying neurophysiological mechanisms, focusing on sensorimotor integration processes during response inhibitio

Is "sky" bluer than "grass" is green? Word-color associations dataset for cognitive science.

Color plays a fundamental role in cognition, influencing perception, memory, and language processing. Although many studies have used word-color associations to examine cognitive processes, the selection of color-associated stimuli has often been arbitrary and rarely validated through independent behavioral measures. The current study developed and validated a dataset of color-associated object words for cognitive research. In Experiment 1, 298 participants provided subjective assessments for 143 words selected from 124 previous studies. For each word, participants indicated the most strongly

Cognitive Factors and Residual Speech Errors: Basic Science, Translational Research, and Some Clinical Frameworks.

This article explores the theoretical and empirical relationships between cognitive factors and residual speech errors (RSEs). Definitions of relevant cognitive domains are provided, as well as examples of formal and informal tasks that may be appropriate in assessment. Although studies to date have been limited in number and scope, basic research suggests that cognitive flexibility, short- and long-term memory, and self-monitoring may be areas of weakness in this population. Preliminary evidence has not supported a relationship between inhibitory control, attention, and RSEs; however, further

From ancient Greece to the cognitive revolution: A comprehensive view of physical rehabilitation sciences.

The development of rehabilitation has traditionally focused on measurements of motor disorders and measurements of the improvements produced during the therapeutic process; however, physical rehabilitation sciences have not focused on understanding the philosophical and scientific principles in clinical intervention and how they are interrelated. The main aim of this paper is to explain the foundation stones of the disciplines of physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech/language therapy in recovery from motor disorder. To reach our goals, the mechanistic view and how it is integrated

Hoping for more: How cognitive science has and hasn't been helpful to the OCD clinician.

Cognitive-behavioural models of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) stemmed from knowledge acquired from cognitive science. Researchers continue to apply basic cognitive-affective science methods to understanding OCD, with the overarching goal of improving and refining evidence-based treatments. However, the degree to which such research has contributed to this goal is unclear. We reviewed OCD research in the general areas that comprise basic cognitive science, and evaluated the degree to which it has contributed to our understanding of the development, maintenance, and treatment of OCD. We fo

NTP monograph on the state of the science concerning fluoride exposure and neurodevelopment and cognition: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Fluoride is a common exposure in our environment that comes from a variety of sources and is widely promoted for its dental and overall oral health benefits. Contributions to an individual's total exposure come primarily from fluoride in drinking water, food, beverages and dental products. A 2006 evaluation by the National Research Council (NRC) found support for an association between consumption of high levels of naturally occurring fluoride in drinking water and adverse neurological effects in humans and recommended further investigation. The evidence reviewed at that time was f

Walter Pitts and biological computation: Neural realization, biological time, and the unfinished foundations of cognitive science.

Walter Pitts is usually remembered as the mathematical co-author of the 1943 McCulloch-Pitts paper and as a precursor of artificial neural networks. That placement is accurate, but it is too narrow to capture the theoretical significance of his work for biological information systems. This article reconstructs Pitts' contribution as part of an unfinished program of biological computationalism: an approach in which computation becomes explanatory when formally characterizable relations are physically realized by organized biological processes. In the original McCulloch-Pitts case, the relevant

The impact of cognitive emotion regulation strategies on math and science anxieties with or without controlling general anxiety.

It is well-established that general anxiety associates with the lower use of adaptive emotion regulation and the higher use of maladaptive emotion regulation. However, no study has previously investigated the impact of cognitive emotion regulation on academic anxieties. Using a sample of secondary school students (N = 391), this study examined the impact of cognitive emotion regulation on math and science anxieties. Math anxiety showed stronger correlations with adaptive than maladaptive emotion regulation, whereas general anxiety showed stronger correlations with maladaptive than adaptive emo

The science of medical decision making: neurosurgery, errors, and personal cognitive strategies for improving quality of care.

During the last 2 decades, there has been a shift in the U.S. health care system towards improving the quality of health care provided by enhancing patient safety and reducing medical errors. Unfortunately, surgical complications, patient harm events, and malpractice claims remain common in the field of neurosurgery. Many of these events are potentially avoidable. There are an increasing number of publications in the medical literature in which authors address cognitive errors in diagnosis and treatment and strategies for reducing such errors, but these are for the most part absent in the neur

[The current conception of the unconscious - empirical results of neurobiology, cognitive sciences, social psychology and emotion research].

The influence of the unconscious on psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy: a comprehensive concept of unconscious processes based on empirical evidence. The theory of the Unconscious constitutes the basis of psychoanalysis and of psychodynamic therapy. The traditional description of the Unconscious as given by Freud is of historical significance and not only gained widespread acceptance but also attracted much criticism. The most important findings of neurobiology, the cognitive sciences, social psychology and emotion research in relation to the Unconscious are compared with this traditiona

Association Between Academic, Cognitive and Health-Related Variables with Academic Stress in Health Sciences University Students.

Academic stress arises from students facing academic demands and is linked to various academic and psychological factors. However, research has yet to explore its potential correlations with somatization, overall health issues, studying strategies, academic procrastination, academic performance, and intelligence scores. The objective of this study was to determine the potential correlations between such variables with academic stress in a sample of health sciences university students. University students of different bachelor's programs were invited to participate; they fulfilled an electronic

Improving the State of the Science in Global Training: Promoting the World Confederation of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies' Training Guidelines.

Advanced professional skills and activities such as psychotherapy require training. However, models and methods for training practitioners to effectively deliver cognitive-behavioural therapies (CBTs) have not been clearly articulated and/or consistently applied. To address the need for global guidance in providing training in the CBTs, the World Confederation of Cognitive and Behavioural Therapies (WCCBT) recently put forward training guidelines. This State of the Science article presents the need and rationale for the WCCBT Training Guidelines and describes their assumptions and content. Suc

Stress and its Expression According to Contemporary Science and Ancient Indian Wisdom: Perseverative Cognition and the Pañca kośas.

Stress is recognised as the most challenging issue of modern times. Contemporary science has understood this phenomenon from one aspect and Indian philosophy gives its traditional reasons based on classical texts. Modern science has recently proposed a concept of perseverative cognition (PC) as an important reason for chronic stress. This has shown how constant rumination on an unpalatable event, object or person leads to various lifestyle disorders. Similarly classical yoga texts like the Taittiriya Upanishad, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Yoga Vashistha describe stress in their unique ways. We

The Canadian blood donor health assessment questionnaire: lessons from history, application of cognitive science principles, and recommendations for change.

Over the last 20 years, the Canadian Blood Services' (CBS) Donor Health Assessment Questionnaire (DHAQ), used to screen prospective blood donors to determine their eligibility, has grown in complexity and length. Its growth is inextricably linked to the evolution of the environment within which CBS operates from unregulated collection and distribution of labile blood products to a fully regulated environment and to the need to satisfy both Health Canada and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements. Within this context, the development of the CBS DHAQ has been characterized by additio
