Effects of combined Baduanjin and cognitive training on cognitive function in cognitively normal older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Preventing cognitive decline is a major challenge in aging research. While mind-body exercises and cognitive training each enhance cognitive function, their combined impact on cognitively normal older adults remains unclear. This study examined whether Baduanjin exercise and cognitive training exert interactive effects on global and domain-specific cognitive function. METHODS: In a 12-week randomized controlled trial with a 2 × 2 factorial design, 162 community-dwelling adults aged 60-75 years with normal cognitive function were assigned to four groups: control (CON), Baduanjin (B

Primary outcome from the augmenting cognitive training in older adults study (ACT): A tDCS and cognitive training randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for effective interventions to stave off cognitive decline in older adults. Cognitive training has variably produced gains in untrained tasks and daily functioning. Combining cognitive training with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) may augment cognitive training effects; however, this approach has yet to be tested on a large-scale. OBJECTIVE: This paper will present the primary findings of the Augmenting Cognitive Training in Older Adults (ACT) clinical trial. We hypothesize that receiving active stimulation with cognitive training will result in grea

Gamification of Cognitive Assessment and Cognitive Training: A Systematic Review of Applications and Efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive tasks are typically viewed as effortful, frustrating, and repetitive, which often leads to participant disengagement. This, in turn, may negatively impact data quality and/or reduce intervention effects. However, gamification may provide a possible solution. If game design features can be incorporated into cognitive tasks without undermining their scientific value, then data quality, intervention effects, and participant engagement may be improved. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aims to explore and evaluate the ways in which gamification has already been used for cog

Head-Mounted Display-Based Application for Cognitive Training.

Virtual Reality (VR) has had significant advances in rehabilitation, due to the gamification of cognitive activities that facilitate treatment. On the other hand, Immersive Virtual Reality (IVR) produces outstanding results due to the interactive features with the user. This work introduces a VR application for memory rehabilitation by walking through a maze and using the Oculus Go head-mounted display (HMD) technology. The mechanics of the game require memorizing geometric shapes while the player progresses in two modes, autonomous or manual, with two levels of difficulty depending on the num

How to engage patients in computerized cognitive training: a cognitive rehabilitation expert's perspective.

PURPOSE: The relationship between a patient and their therapist plays a crucial role in patient engagement. While Computerized Cognitive Training (CCT) may assist in preserving cognitive skills in cases of aging, dementia or acquired brain injuries, its effectiveness has not been definitively proven. Improving user engagement, acceptance, and software usability could aid in addressing this issue. The present study aims to identify potential obstacles and facilitators by examining the perspectives of rehabilitation professionals on the current usage of CCT software. METHODS: Semi-structured in

Combined physical and cognitive training enhances telomere length in mild cognitive impairment patients.

BACKGROUND: Environmental enrichment training may delay cognitive decline in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) by reducing telomere shortening, a cellular marker of aging. We investigated whether combined physical/cognitive training affects leukocyte telomere length (LTL) in the randomized trial “Train the Brain”. METHODS: LTL was assessed in 94 MCI (75.1 ± 5.1 years) subjects and 37 non-MCI subjects (73.2 ± 4.6 years). MCI patients were assigned to receive either 7 months of training or standard care. After 7 months, both groups were reassessed for changes in LTL and the Alzheimer's Disease Ass

Divergence of subjective and performance-based cognitive gains following cognitive training in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive training is effective for improving cognitive performance among people with schizophrenia. An individual's perception of their own cognition is dissociable from performance on objective cognitive tests. Since subjective cognitive benefit may impact engagement, motivation, and satisfaction with time-intensive cognitive interventions, this study aimed to determine whether subjective cognitive difficulties improve in conjunction with cognitive gains following 30 h of cognitive training. METHODS: Patients with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (N = 46) were randomize

Augmenting cognitive training in older adults (The ACT Study): Design and Methods of a Phase III tDCS and cognitive training trial.

BACKGROUND: Adults over age 65 represent the fastest growing population in the US. Decline in cognitive abilities is a hallmark of advanced age and is associated with loss of independence and dementia risk. There is a pressing need to develop effective interventions for slowing or reversing the cognitive aging process. While certain forms of cognitive training have shown promise in this area, effects only sometimes transfer to neuropsychological tests within or outside the trained domain. This paper describes a NIA-funded Phase III adaptive multisite randomized clinical trial, examining whethe

A meta-analysis of the consequences of cognitive training on the cognitive function of aged mild cognitive impairment patients.

Cognitive training has gained popularity as a means to aid older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a transitional phase between normal ageing and Alzheimer's disease (AD). MCI represents a critical and potentially reversible state that can either improve or progress to full-blown dementia. This study aims to evaluate the impact of cognitive training on cognitive function in aged patients with MCI. PubMed, Embase, Medline, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang databases were systematically retrieved from inception until May 2024. We rigorously ap

Computerized cognitive training for problem gambling: A randomized controlled trial (TRAIN-online).

BACKGROUND: Non-face-to-face interventions offer promise, with cognitive training showing potential but inconsistent efficacy in problem gambling. METHODS: We conducted a non-face-to-face, parallel, randomized, controlled, single-blinded trial to evaluate training programs in adults with problem gambling (CPGI ≥5). Participants were randomized 1:1 to a web-based cognitive training program targeting inhibition unrelated to addiction cues or a control program on visuo-spatial functioning. Both programs benefited from weekly phone calls to support engagement and transferability to daily life. A

A Role of the Parasympathetic Nervous System in Cognitive Training.

BACKGROUND: Vision-based speed of processing (VSOP) training can result in broad cognitive improvements in older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). What remains unknown, however, is what neurophysiological mechanisms account for the observed training effect. Much of the work in this area has focused on the central nervous system, neglecting the fact that the peripheral system can contributes to changes of the central nervous system and vice versa. OBJECTIVE: We examined the prospective relationship between an adaptive parasympathetic nervous system response to cognitive st

Rumination: Cognitive consequences of training to inhibit the negative.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: To explore cognitive factors in ruminative thinking, we assessed the effect of a single-session of inhibition training on subsequent biases in attention and interpretation. METHODS: We randomly assigned participants to either inhibit or attend to negative stimuli. Inhibition was assessed by using assessment trials embedded throughout the training, and interpretation bias was assessed following the training. RESULTS: Trait rumination moderated training effects on both measures. Low ruminators in the inhibition-training condition maintained their level of inhibition

Cognitive training and brain stimulation in patients with cognitive impairment: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Repeated sessions of training and non-invasive brain stimulation have the potential to enhance cognition in patients with cognitive impairment. We hypothesized that combining cognitive training with anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) will lead to performance improvement in the trained task and yield transfer to non-trained tasks. METHODS: In our randomized, sham-controlled, double-blind study, 46 patients with cognitive impairment (60-80 years) were randomly assigned to one of two interventional groups. We administered a 9-session cognitive training (consisting

An inflammatory fingerprint in mild cognitively impaired patients is reversed by physical and cognitive training.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a major global health concern, with number of affected individuals expected to rise to 139 million by 2050. Lifestyle factors play a significant role in modulating cognitive decline, and multidomain interventions have demonstrated effectiveness in improving outcomes for populations at risk. The Train the Brain (TTB) program-a combined physical and cognitive training delivered in a social setting-has previously demonstrated cognitive benefits within 7 months. However, the underlying biological mechanisms remain unclear. Given the role of inflammation in a
