Temperature dependence of habituation of the initial responses to cold-water immersion.

The initial responses to cold-water immersion, evoked by stimulation of peripheral cold receptors, include tachycardia, a reflex inspiratory gasp and uncontrollable hyperventilation. When immersed naked, the maximum responses are initiated in water at 10 degrees C, with smaller responses being observed following immersion in water at 15 degrees C. Habituation of the initial responses can be achieved following repeated immersions, but the specificity of this response with regard to water temperature is not known. Thirteen healthy male volunteers were divided into a control (C) group (n = 5) and

Hymenolepis diminuta: the effect of cold temperature exposure on infections in mice.

Hymenolepis diminuta grown in mice maintained at 5 degrees C were significantly larger and markedly more developed than those grown simultaneously in control mice maintained at 21 degrees C. In mice maintained at 5 degrees C, the incidence of infection and the number of worms recovered per host were higher than in the mice kept at 21 degrees C. Regardless of the temperature of the hosts' external environment, primary infections were always expelled before Day 13 postinfection and secondary (challenge) infections were invariably lost before Day 7.

Chlorine dioxide gas sterilization of cold-chain or temperature-sensitive devices.

Cold-chain terminal sterilization is used for products that must be manufactured, stored, and maintained with a carefully controlled temperature range, such as temperature-sensitive drugs and vaccines in prefilled syringes or autoinjectors containing temperature-sensitive drugs. Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is an ideal sterilant for cold-chain terminal sterilization because it forms a true gas at room temperatures (15°C/59°F - 25°C/77°F), with a reliable and consistent process, with excellent penetration, and does not require elevated temperatures. In the current study, we validated the efficacy of

[Intraoperative thermography--temperature range on the heart surface during cold cardioplegia].

The paper presents the temperature analysis of the myocardial surface at the cohort of 11 patients with coronary artery disease, who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting with cardiopulmonary bypass. Left and right ventricle temperature changes were registered with Agema Thermovision 900 SW/TE system during cold cardioplegia infusion. Cardioplegia was delivered by the coronary sinus and by the aortic root. An individual pattern of cardioplegia distribution was found. The differences in the temperature of the right and left ventricle correlated with the presence of the critical coronary art

Physiology and genetics of Listeria monocytogenes survival and growth at cold temperatures.

Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne pathogen that can cause serious invasive human illness in susceptible patients, notably immunocompromised, pregnant women, and adults > 65 years old. Most human listeriosis cases appear to be caused by consumption of refrigerated ready-to-eat foods that are contaminated with high levels of L. monocytogenes. While initial L. monocytogenes levels in contaminated foods are usually low, the ability of L. monocytogenes to survive and multiply at low temperatures allows it to reach levels high enough to cause human disease, particularly if contaminated foods tha

The hot and the cold: unravelling the variable response of plant respiration to temperature.

When predicting the effects of climate change, global carbon circulation models that include a positive feedback effect of climate warming on the carbon cycle often assume that (1) plant respiration increases exponentially with temperature (with a constant Q10) and (2) that there is no acclimation of respiration to long-term changes in temperature. In this review, we show that these two assumptions are incorrect. While Q10 does not respond systematically to elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations, other factors such as temperature, light, and water availability all have the potential to influe

Ski-Everest (8848 m) Expedition: Digit Skin Temperature Responses to Cold Immersion May Reflect Susceptibility to Cold Injury.

INTRODUCTION: We tested the hypothesis that individual susceptibility to freezing cold injury might be reflected in an attenuated cold-induced vasodilatation (CIVD) response by comparing the CIVD responses of an elite alpinist with a history of freezing cold injury in the feet (case alpinist) with those of an age- and ability- matched noninjured alpinists control group (controls). According to this hypothesis, the vasomotor responses to a CIVD test of the case alpinist would represent a pathophysiological response when compared with the normal physiological response of a noninjured cohort. Pharmacological blockade of the cold receptor TRPM8 attenuates autonomic and behavioral cold defenses and decreases deep body temperature.

We studied N-(2-aminoethyl)-N-(4-(benzyloxy)-3-methoxybenzyl)thiophene-2-carboxamide hydrochloride (M8-B), a selective and potent antagonist of the transient receptor potential melastatin-8 (TRPM8) channel. In vitro, M8-B blocked cold-induced and TRPM8-agonist-induced activation of rat, human, and murine TRPM8 channels, including those on primary sensory neurons. In vivo, M8-B decreased deep body temperature (T(b)) in Trpm8(+/+) mice and rats, but not in Trpm8(-/-) mice, thus suggesting an on-target action. Intravenous administration of M8-B was more effective in decreasing T(b) in rats than i

Effects of Sedation on Rectal Temperature During Equine Dental Procedures Performed in Cold to Warm Ambient Temperatures.

Sedation is important for safe equine dental procedures, but it is unknown if there is a higher risk of sedation causing hypothermia in procedures performed during cold months. The authors hypothesize that sedation for a dental procedure will significantly decrease rectal body temperature in cold as compared to warm ambient temperatures. Adult equids (N = 246), from a private equine dentistry practice, that underwent dental equilibration, were selected for the study. Each horse's weight was estimated and sedation was administered intravenously (0.01 mg/kg detomidine and 0.01 mg/kg butorphanol)

Co-elevated atmospheric CO2 and temperature increase rice yield but degrade nutrient quality in a cold temperature region.

The responses of three Japonica rice cultivars were investigated throughout a full growing season in computer-controlled open-top chambers under four treatments: control (CK), elevated CO2 (700 ppm, eC), elevated temperature (+2 °C, eT), and their combination (eCeT). To assess the impact of climate change factors, the present study performed comprehensive physiological measurements and flag leaf transcriptomic analysis to evaluate rice yield and quality. Both eC and eCeT synergistically upregulated genes related to photosystem II (PsbA) and photosystem I (PsaA/B/C), thereby enhancing photochem

Cutaneous vascular and core temperature responses to sustained cold exposure in hypoxia.

We tested the effect of hypoxia on cutaneous vascular regulation and defense of core temperature during cold exposure. Twelve subjects had two microdialysis fibres placed in the ventral forearm and were immersed to the sternum in a bathtub on parallel study days (normoxia and poikilocapnic hypoxia with an arterial O(2) saturation of 80%). One fibre served as the control (1 mM propranolol) and the other received 5 mM yohimbine (plus 1 mM propranolol) to block adrenergic receptors. Skin blood flow was assessed at each site (laser Doppler flowmetry), divided by mean arterial pressure to calculate

Cold temperature enhances innate eosinophilic airway inflammation via transient receptor potential ankyrin1.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Asthma exacerbations due to cold air exposure are well recognized; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We investigate the role of the transient receptor potential ankyrin1 (TRPA1) channel in cold air-induced aggravation of innate airway inflammation using a murine model of papain stimulation combined with cold air exposure. METHODS: Wild-type (WT) and Trpa1 knockout (KO) mice were treated intranasally with papain under different temperature conditions. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and lung tissues were analyzed. The effects of the TRPA1 antagoni

Haemoconcentration, not decreased blood temperature, increases blood viscosity during cold water immersion.

INTRODUCTION: Prolonged cold-water immersion (CWI) has the potential to cause significant hypothermia and haemoconcentration; both of which have previously been shown to independently increase blood viscosity in vitro. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of CWI on blood viscosity and examine the relative contribution of decreased blood temperature and haemoconcentration. METHODS: Ten healthy volunteers were immersed to mid-sternum in 10°C water for 90 minutes. Gastrointestinal (GI) temperature, haematocrit (Hct), and blood viscosity were measured pre- and post-CWI. RESULTS:

Core Temperature Responses to Cold-Water Immersion Recovery: A Pooled-Data Analysis.

PURPOSE: To examine the effect of postexercise cold-water immersion (CWI) protocols, compared with control (CON), on the magnitude and time course of core temperature (Tc) responses. METHODS: Pooled-data analyses were used to examine the Tc responses of 157 subjects from previous postexercise CWI trials in the authors' laboratories. CWI protocols varied with different combinations of temperature, duration, immersion depth, and mode (continuous vs intermittent). Tc was examined as a double difference (ΔΔTc), calculated as the change in Tc in CWI condition minus the corresponding change in CON.

Breathing pattern affects airway wall temperature during cold air hyperpnea in humans.

We studied the influence of flow rate on respiratory heat exchange in 9 healthy adult subjects using a new noninvasive technique, the single-breath temperature washout (SBTW) curve. The SBTW curve is a plot of exhaled gas temperature versus exhaled volume during a standard exhalation and consists of an initial rise (within the first 200 ml) to a plateau temperature that persists through the remainder of exhalation. We found that exhaled gas temperatures within the initial expirate were colder at every airway locus than corresponding intra-airway gas temperatures at end-inspiration, suggesting

Effects of cold temperatures on abrasion resistance of concrete with different mixture compositions.

This study investigates the abrasion resistance of concrete used in cold-region infrastructure, with a focus on the effects of temperature and mixture composition. A number of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) and normal concrete (NC) mixtures was evaluated under four temperature conditions (+ 20 °C, 0 °C, - 10 °C, and - 20 °C). The mixtures incorporated varying supplementary cementing materials (SCMs), namely metakaolin (MK), silica fume (SF), slag (SL), fly ash (FA), aggregate sizes, coarse-to-fine (C/F) aggregate ratios, and binder contents. Abrasion resistance was assessed using rotating-c

KCNQ1 is an essential mediator of the sex-dependent perception of moderate cold temperatures.

Low temperatures and cooling agents like menthol induce cold sensation by activating the peripheral cold receptors TRPM8 and TRPA1, cation channels belonging to the TRP channel family, while the reduction of potassium currents provides an additional and/or synergistic mechanism of cold sensation. Despite extensive studies over the past decades to identify the molecular receptors that mediate thermosensation, cold sensation is still not fully understood and many cold-sensitive peripheral neurons do not express the well-established cold sensor TRPM8. We found that the voltage-gated potassium cha
