Microalgal Cell Wall Dynamics at Different Growth Stages Under Cold Stress Conditions: A Study of Ultrastructure and Chemical Composition.

Microalgae have been gaining attention for biotechnological purposes in different fields, such as food, energy, cosmetics, and bioremediation. However, due to habitat variation across the planet, there is still a scarcity of information on microalgae development in extreme environments, such as those with low temperatures. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of growth stage and cold stress (5°C) on cell wall features, including ultrastructure, and main polysaccharides in three microalgal species from Northern Sweden: Coelastrella sp. 3-4, Chlorella vulgaris sp. 13-1, and Scene

Cold stress during winter over North India: Patterns, trends, and mortality risks.

The cold temperatures during winter contribute to significant discomfort, causing cold stress to the lives of people. In this study, we investigate the cold stress conditions and their trends over north India during November - February for the period 1982-2020, using Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI), a widely recognized biometeorological variable. The onset of cold stress typically initiates in the late evening (18 IST) and gradually spreads across the north India. It then intensifies over night into moderate cold stress, persisting from 20 IST until the early morning hours (7 IST). Cold

Preparing plants for improved cold tolerance by priming.

Cold is a major stressor, which limits plant growth and development in many parts of the world, especially in the temperate climate zones. A large number of experimental studies has demonstrated that not only acclimation and entrainment but also the experience of single short stress events of various abiotic or biotic kinds (priming stress) can improve the tolerance of plants to chilling temperatures. This process, called priming, depends on a stress "memory". It does not change cold sensitivity per se but beneficially modifies the response to cold and can last for days, months, or even longer

Acute cold stress leads to zebrafish ovarian dysfunction by regulating miRNA and mRNA.

Temperature is a critical factor that regulates the reproduction processes in teleost. However, the gonadal response mechanism to cold stress in fish remains largely unknown. In the present study, female zebrafish were exposed to different extents of low temperatures at 18 °C and 10 °C for 48 h. The ovarian histology was remarkably damaged after cold stress exposure. Integrated analysis of miRNA-mRNA was used to investigate the ovarian response to acute cold stress. A large number of mRNAs and miRNAs were altered by cold stress, which are involved in extensive biological processes. It is indic

Cellular RNA Targets of Cold Shock Proteins CspC and CspE and Their Importance for Serum Resistance in Septicemic Escherichia coli.

The RNA chaperones, cold shock proteins CspC and CspE, are important in stress response and adaptation. We studied their role in the pathogenesis of a virulent Escherichia coli, representative of extraintestinal pathogenic E. coli (ExPEC) which are serum resistant and septicemic. We performed a global analysis to identify transcripts that interact with these cold shock proteins (CSPs), focusing on virulence-related genes. We used CLIP-seq, which combines UV cross-linking, immunoprecipitation and RNA sequencing. A large number of transcripts bound to the CSPs were identified, and many bind both

Erythrocyte profile of circulating blood of Neogobius melanostomus (Pallas, 1814) under conditions of experimental hypothermia.

The influence of hypothermia on erythrocyte profile of thermophile teleost species round goby, Neogobius melanostomus (Pallas, 1814), has been studied. Fish were acclimated to temperature 1-2оС, 15-16оС and 19-20оС (control group) and held at given conditions for 5 days. The number of red blood cell precursors (pronormoblasts, basophilic and polychromatophilic normoblasts) in circulating blood has been estimated. Also, the number of abnormal erythrocytes, i.e. cells with micronuclei, nuclei invaginations, red blood cell shades, dacryocytes and cells undergoing amitosis has been determined on s

Consequences of experimental cortisol manipulations on the thermal biology of the checkered puffer (Sphoeroides testudineus) in laboratory and field environments.

Anthropogenic climate change is altering temperature regimes for coastal marine fishes. However, given that temperature changes will not occur in isolation of other stressors, it is necessary to explore the potential consequences of stress on the thermal tolerances and preferences of tropical marine fish in order to understand the thresholds for survival, and predict the associated coastal ecological consequences. In this study, we used exogenous cortisol injections to investigate the effects of a thermal challenge on checkered puffers (Sphoeroides testudineus) as a secondary stressor. There w

Hydrogen sulfide as a key mediator in melatonin-induced enhancement of cold tolerance in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) seedlings.

Melatonin (MT) is a key bioactive molecule that enhances plant tolerance to cold stress; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study demonstrates that foliar application of 100 μM MT improves cold tolerance in tomato seedlings by activating antioxidant enzyme systems and cold-responsive pathways. Notably, endogenous hydrogen sulfide (H2S) levels are also elevated, suggesting a potential role in MT-mediated responses. Moreover, treatment with sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS, an H2S donor) further enhances MT-induced cold tolerance by increasing antioxidant capacity, promoting the ac

The hysteresis damage of cold exposure on tissue and transcript levels in mice.

OBJECTIVES: Although cold stress-induced damage to the heart and thyroid has been reported, specific organ associations between the heart and thyroid with delayed injury mechanisms have not been investigated. In this study, we determined the damage time and transcript levels of a large number of genes in the heart and thyroid after cold exposure. Meanwhile, we analysed the relationship between heart and thyroid injury in human medical records to determine the association of delayed injury from cold exposure. METHODS: Mice were exposed to cold stress and hysteresis injury. Gene changes at the

Delayed mortality effects of cold fronts during the winter season on Aedes aegypti in a temperate region.

The expansion of the invasive mosquito Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) towards temperate regions in the Americas is causing concern because of its public health implications. As for other insects, the distribution limits of Ae. aegypti have been suggested to be related to minimum temperatures and to be controlled mainly by cold tolerance. The aim of this study was to assess the daily mortality of immature stages of Ae. aegypti under natural winter conditions in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in relation to preceding thermal conditions. The experiment was performed outdoors, and one cohort of l

A step forward toward improved cold tolerance in rice: integrating physiological insights with cutting-edge genomic approaches.

Cold stress (CS) is a major abiotic factor that significantly affects rice growth, development, and productivity. To withstand CS, rice plants have evolved intricate mechanisms that enable them to detect external signals and respond to changing environmental conditions. Understanding the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying cold tolerance (CT) is therefore crucial for developing rice cultivars that can thrive under cold conditions. To date, a limited number of genes/QTLs associated with CT, such as: Ctb1, COLD1, COLD6, qLTG3-1, SGD1, and CTB4a, have been cloned and well studied. T

Analysis of hepatic and serum responses to acute cold stress in juvenile yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares (Bonnaterre 1788).

A decline in environmental temperature markedly affects various physiological processes of marine organisms, posing significant challenges to the aquaculture of yellowfin tuna Thunnus albacares (Bonnaterre 1788), particularly under winter cold conditions. Understanding how yellowfin tuna physiologically respond to environmental fluctuations is essential for revealing their adaptive strategies under stress conditions. In this study, two cold stress groups, LT (24°C) and ULT (18°C), were established, with a control group (CG, 30°C), and samples were collected at 0, 12, 24 and 36 h. We systematic

Effect of a single cold stress exposure on the reproductive behavior of male crickets.

Cold stress is an important abiotic factor that can impact insect physiology, behavior, and overall fitness. Upon exposure to cold temperature, many insects enter a reversible state of immobility called chill coma. If the cold stress is brief and mild enough, insects can recover and regain full mobility upon return to warmer temperatures. However, the long-term impact of sublethal cold stress on insect behavior has been understudied. Here, sexually naïve adult male Acheta domesticus crickets were exposed to a single 0 °C cold stress for 6 h. One week later, the ability of these males to mate w

Impaired autophagy following ex vivo cooling of simulated hypothermic temperatures in peripheral blood mononuclear cells from young and older adults.

Hypothermia is a critical consequence of extreme cold exposure that increases the risk of cold-related injury and death in humans. While the initiation of cytoprotective mechanisms including the process of autophagy and the heat shock response (HSR) is crucial to cellular survival during periods of stress, age-related decrements in these systems may underlie cold-induced cellular vulnerability in older adults. Moreover, whether potential sex-related differences in autophagic regulation influence the human cold stress response remain unknown. We evaluated the effect of age and sex on mechanisms

A protocol for analysing thermal stress in insects using infrared thermography.

The study of insect responses to thermal stress has involved a variety of protocols and methodologies that hamper the ability to compare results between studies. For that reason, the development of a protocol to standardize thermal assays is necessary. In this sense, infrared thermography solves some of the problems allowing us to take continuous temperature measurements without handling the individuals, an important fact in cold-blooded organisms like insects. Here, we present a working protocol based on infrared thermography to estimate both cold and heat thermal stress in insects. We analys

Voluntary respiratory control and cerebral blood flow velocity upon ice-water immersion.

INTRODUCTION: In non-habituated subjects, cold-shock response to cold-water immersion causes rapid reduction in cerebral blood flow velocity (approximately 50%) due to hyperventilation, increasing risk of syncope, aspiration, and drowning. Adaptation to the response is possible, but requires several cold immersions. This study examines whether thorough instruction enables non-habituated persons to attenuate the ventilatory component of cold-shock response. METHODS: There were nine volunteers (four women) who were lowered into a 0 degrees C immersion tank for 60 s. Middle cerebral artery mean

Cold Shock Disrupts Massed Training-Elicited Memory in Drosophila.

Memory consolidation is a time-dependent process occurring over hours, days, or longer in different species and requires protein synthesis. An apparent exception is a memory type in Drosophila elicited by a single olfactory conditioning episode, which ostensibly consolidates quickly, rendering it resistant to disruption by cold anesthesia a few hours post-training. This anesthesia-resistant memory (ARM), is independent of protein synthesis. Protein synthesis independent memory can also be elicited in Drosophila by multiple massed cycles of olfactory conditioning, and this led to the prevailing

CaPDX1, a Novel Protein, Positively Regulates Cold Stress Tolerance via Interaction with CaSnRK2.4 in Pepper (Capsicum annuum L.).

Capsicum annuum is a Solanaceae crop that is sensitive to cold, which affects its growth and development upon prolonged exposure and ultimately reduces yield. In response, a complex regulatory network of cold-responsive genes is activated. Earlier studies have shown that SnRKs play a positive role in enhancing cold tolerance in different crops, including peppers; however, the underlying molecular mechanisms and downstream targets have yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, yeast hybrid screening using CaSnRK2.4 identified a potential interacting partner CaPDX1. The interaction between CaPD

Glycine Betaine-Induced Metabolic Responses Under Heat and Cold Stress in Passiflora edulis f. flavicarpa.

Temperature extremes represent a major constraint for the cultivation of yellow passion fruit (Passiflora edulis Sims f. flavicarpa), a tropical crop increasingly exposed to heat waves and chilling events under climate change. Glycine betaine (GB) is a widely studied osmoprotectant in plants, yet its influence on metabolic responses of passion fruit under contrasting temperature stresses remains poorly characterized. This study investigated the effects of exogenous GB on primary metabolite profiles of passion fruit seedlings subjected to heat (25, 35, and 45 °C) and cold (25, 15, and 5 °C) con
