BACKGROUND: Single incision laparoscopic colectomy (SILC) and single incision robotic colectomy (SIRC) are both advanced minimally invasive operative techniques. However, studies comparing these two surgical methods have not been published. The purpose of this study is to compare and evaluate the short-term outcomes of SIRC with those of SILC.
METHODS: A total of 21 consecutive patients underwent SIRC and 136 consecutive patients underwent SILC in separate institutes between January 2013 and December 2019. We used retrospective cohort matching to analyze these patients.
RESULTS: Prior to mat

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: To determine the statistical indicators aimed at identifying patients for whom ambulatory colectomy could be proposed without additional risk.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical charts of patients who benefited from scheduled colonic or rectal resection during conventional hospitalization stays between 2018 and 2019 were reviewed. Eligibility for ambulatory colectomy was defined by hospital stay≤4 days and absence of any postoperative complication. Patient characteristics were compared, and the results were modeled in the form of a decision-making tree. The effect of an e

Laparoscopic preparation before colectomy consists of freeing the colon laparoscopically followed by a small elective laparotomy for resection and anastomosis. From January 1993 to October 1994, we performed 86 consecutive planned colectomies including 16 (19%) which had laparoscopic preparation. In 3 of these cases (19%) the procedure was converted to laparotomy due to difficult dissection. The 13 patients with complete laparoscopically prepared colectomy were retained for this study. There were 9 men and 4 women, mean age 54 +/- 14 years (range 34-79). Indications for surgery were benign tum

Colectomy for malignant tumors or unresectable benign tumors requires preoperative planning based on cross-sectional imaging, consideration of neoadjuvant therapy, a decision on the extent of lymphadenectomy, and comprehensive knowledge of the relevant anatomy. Imaging review is critical for determining resectability and noting any aberrant anatomy. Based on the imaging, neoadjuvant therapy should be considered for bulky or locally advanced disease. The anatomical resection of the colon, mesentery, and lymph node basins is performed in accordance with the concept of complete mesocolic excision

INTRODUCTION: Single-port surgery (SPS) has been growing in acceptance as an alternative to traditional laparoscopic surgery. With SPS, there are technical skills required that are not routine to standard laparoscopy. We explored the feasibility of micro-laparoscopic colectomy (MLC) using 3 mm instruments in patients eligible for standard laparoscopic surgery.
METHODS: We performed an IRB approved retrospective review of all segmental colectomy performed by a single surgeon in selected patients using a micro-laparoscopic technique. We utilized two 3-mm trocars and one 12-mm Hasson umbilical i

Colectomy is performed for inflammatory bowel disease, familial polyposis syndrome and colorectal carcinoma. Surgical procedures are ileostomy with or without pouch, ileorectal anastomosis or ileal pouch-anal anastomosis. One of the major functions of the intact large intestine is to absorb water and electrolytes. After colectomy, as much as 400-1000 ml of nearly isotonic ileostomy fluid may be excreted, resulting in a chronic salt and water depletion. This is compensated for by an activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Reduced urine volumes may cause kidney stones. Both dehyd

A combination of laparoscopic and rectoscopic procedures has enabled complete resection of the sigmoid colon and eliminated the need for minilaparotomy when constructing the anastomosis or withdrawing the specimen. This combined procedure was performed in different ways in a series of animal models until the definitive technique had been standardized. These techniques were then successfully used in 15 consecutive medium-sized pigs. Histological evaluation of the specimens, including the anastomosis (examined 2-3 weeks after operation) confirmed the efficacy and safety of the method.

Laparoscopic assisted sigmoidectomy was the technique of choice for a mentally retarded adult male with severe seizure disorder and recurrent sigmoid volvulus in an effort to reduce post-op stress and discomfort and thereby diminish the possibility of exacerbation of his seizures. The technique was performed using standard laparoscopic technique and a 5cm incision in the left abdomen to perform extracorporeal bowel anastomosis. The surgery was successful and the patient experienced minimal post op discomfort, no complications and had no seizures. This newest addition to the portfolio of laparo

BACKGROUND: Although extended colectomy is often chosen for patients with transverse colon cancer, the optimal surgical approach for mid-transverse colon cancer has not been established.
METHODS: We identified patients who underwent a transverse (TC) or an extended colectomy (EC) for mid-transverse colon cancer between 2004 and 2014. To adjust for potential selection bias between the groups, a propensity score matching analysis was performed.
RESULTS: A total of 103 patients were included, of whom 63% underwent EC (right 47%, left 17%) and 37% TC. EC patients tend to have worse short-term ou

PURPOSE: Laparoscopic-assisted colectomy is a common procedure for colorectal disease, and laparoscopic colectomy from a single access point is rapidly evolving. This report describes the use of single-access laparoscopic colectomy (SALC) with a novel multiport device in sigmoidectomy for colon cancer.
METHODS: Data were collected retrospectively on 5 patients who underwent the procedure for colon cancers in the period from November 2008 through January 2009. The abdomen was approached through a 3- to 4-cm incision via the umbilicus in every case. To ensure maintenance of the pneumoperitoneum

Whereas the advancement of minimally invasive surgical techniques and enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways for partial colectomies has shortened postoperative length of stay, the ideal length of stay after partial colectomy with or without diverting loop ileostomy is still up for debate. This article examines the safety and efficacy of discharging select patients home from day surgery following partial colectomy. We performed a retrospective review of 7 patients who underwent partial colectomy at one tertiary care center from December 2020 to August 2021. None of our cases suffered

Pneumatosis coli (PC) is a rare condition which may be difficult to diagnose. We report a case of PC in a 46-year-old woman, where colonoscopy and biopsies showed signs of widespread polyposis. She had a prophylactic colectomy. Pathologic examination of the specimen showed multiple air-filled cysts in the colonic wall. By analysis of a preoperative abdominal computed tomography with lung window the cysts could be visualised. This procedure could be a valuable diagnostic tool for excluding PC in patients suspected for polyposis, but with a negative family history of familial adenomatous polypos

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic resection has been advocated as a method of colectomy for various colon and rectal disease. One advantage claimed by laparoscopy is its smaller incision size. The aim of the present study is to evaluate whether mini-incision is feasible along with the advantage of adequate exploration of the peritoneal cavity.
METHODS: From December 2000 to November 2003, 316 patients with various colorectal diseases receiving colectomies through a skin incision less than 7 cm were analyzed. All of the colectomies were performed by a single surgeon. Exploration of the entire peritonea

In cats, clinical signs of constipation usually respond to laxatives, fecal softeners, enemas, and dietary management. Uncommonly, constipation is chronic and is associated with a marked increase in the diameter of the colon. When megacolon is present, constipation responds poorly to medical therapy. Without surgical treatment, megacolon may become an intolerable problem, with euthanasia of the cat as the probable outcome. Subtotal colectomy is now established as a satisfactory treatment for idiopathic megacolon in cats. Recently, removal of the colon has been used successfully to treat chroni

The outcome in 40 patients who underwent colectomy for idiopathic megacolon and megarectum over an 18 year period was evaluated. All patients had a radiologically dilated bowel and a bowel frequency of less than two per week. Twenty two patients had a caecorectal anastomosis, 11 had an ileorectal anastomosis (including one with a previous caecorectal anastomosis and four with a previous sigmoid resection), and seven had a sigmoid resection. The mean (range) age at operation was 35 (17-69) years. All three operations resulted in a normal bowel frequency in more than 80% of patients but no patie

Subtotal and total colectomy was the choice therapeutic solution for multiple colonic cancer, diffuse rectocolonic polyposis, multiple colonic polyposis, ulcerohaemorrhagic rectocolitis, and for two rare diseases; megacolon with extensive atrophy of lymph nodes, and acute ischaemia of the colon. A total of 35 cases are reported. Ileorectal anastomosis was the method used for this type of intervention. The opportunity of rectal conservation is discussed, in cases of rectocolonic polyposis and ulcerative haemorrhagic rectocolitis. The difficulty of making an optimal choice in complicated forms o

In nineteen colectomized children operated for Hirschsprung's disease in most instances, size and weight were within normal ranges about six years after surgery. They passed stools, mostly of pulpy consistence, once to ten-times a day, on average four times a day. Eleven children suffered from continence disturbances. Seven developed severe recurrent enteritis. These results as well as those of three children operated according to Martin's technique are compared with those in the literature.
