The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) of the elbow is a complex capsuloligamentous structure critical in stabilizing the ulnohumeral and radiocapitellar articulations. LCL injury can result in elbow instability, allowing the proximal radius and ulna to externally rotate away from the humerus as a supination stress is applied to the forearm. Elbow dislocation is the most common cause of LCL injury, followed by iatrogenic injury. LCL pathology resulting in late recurrent instability is rare but disabling. The diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion, detailed history, and focused physical ex

Radial collateral ligament (RCL) injuries of the thumb are relatively common although they are less common than ulnar collateral ligament injuries, which make up 10% to 42% of collateral ligament injuries of the thumb. The RCL is especially important for pinch movements and for movements of depression. Complete disruption of the RCL can result in both static and dynamic instability, which can lead to a predictable sequence of a painful deformity resulting in articular degeneration. Most authors agree that both acute and chronic grade 3 RCL tears should be surgically treated. There are various

Assessment of axial alignment with 3-foot radiographs and valgus-varus stress radiographs is important when managing symptomatic MCL instability. Realignment of the anatomical axis to 0 degrees to reduce the stress on the MCL reduces the symptomatic laxity. The assessment of MCL laxity is important when considering valgus HTO for medial compartment arthritis. A combined opening and closing wedge osteotomy reduces the size of the fragment needed and tensions the MCL at the same time. Interposition proximal tibial allografts may be used to retention combined MCL/LCL laxity as well as to correct

Isolated collateral ligament injury is uncommon in dogs and cats and often occurs concurrently with injuries to other stifle ligaments. These injuries are either treated with primary reconstruction of the individual ligaments or with transarticular pin or splint stabilization of the joint until adequate periatricular fibrosis is achieved. Prognosis is generally good if adequate joint stability has been achieved.

Reconstruction of the ulnar collateral ligament using a free tendon graft was performed on sixteen athletes. All participated in sports that involved throwing (mostly professional baseball), and all had valgus instability of the elbow. After reconstruction and rehabilitation, ten of the sixteen patients returned to their previous level of participation in sports, one returned to a lower level of participation, and five retired from professional athletics. Despite precautions, there was a high incidence of complications related to the ulnar nerve. Two patients had postoperative ulnar neuropathy

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the clinical outcome and findings of ligamentous repair for acute posterolateral rotatory instability (PLRI) of the elbow.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen patients underwent lateral collateral ligament repair for acute PLRI. Ten male and nine female patients were observed for a mean of 9 months; their mean age was 46 years (14-70 years). The mean time from injury to operation was 8.1 days (1-18 days). The lateral pivot shift and varus stress test results were positive for all cases. We repaired the lateral ulnar collateral ligament with Ethibond in 6 cases and Bio-FAS

PURPOSE: Thumb metacarpophalangeal collateral ligament injuries occur in 50 per 100,000 people. The most frequent rupture site locations that are often cited are the thumb ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) occurring distally from the proximal phalanx and the radial collateral ligament (RCL) occurring proximally from the metacarpal head.2,16 In this study, we report the frequency of the rupture site location of both thumb UCL and RCL injuries.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 1,004 consecutive finger collateral ligament surgeries performed at a single academic institution over 17 years was c

The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of MRI to display injuries of the lateral collateral ligamentous complex in patients with an acute ankle distorsion trauma. The MR examinations of 36 patients with ankle pain after ankle distorsion were evaluated retrospectively without knowledge of clinical history, outcome and/or operative findings. The examinations were performed on a 1. 5-T whole-body imager using a flexible surface coil. The signs for ligamentous abnormality were as follows: complete or partial discontinuity, increased signal within, and irregularity and waviness of the li

Collateral ligament attachments in distal femora and distal tibiotarsi were examined in broilers on ad libitum and restricted feeding and in laying strain fowls fed ad libitum. Histopathological studies revealed morphological changes in ligaments of ad libitum-fed broilers which were less apparent or absent in other birds examined. One such change was loss of crimp pattern in collagen bundles of ligaments, which suggested that structural derangement had occurred. Chondroid metaplasia and foci of hyaline cartilage were observed in ligaments of ad libitum-fed broilers and may result from tissue

UNLABELLED: Many authors have discussed on the instability of the ankle joint. We have therefore investigated the variety, courses and the functions of the lateral collateral ligament by dissecting 16 freshly amputated limbs. It was composed of 4 ligaments, i.e., the anterior talofibular, the posterior talofibular, the calcaneofibular and the lateral talocalcaneal ligaments. These ligaments have various courses and influence the stability of the ankle joint in various manners. Transection of the anterior talofibular ligament alone caused inversion and forward instability, and transection of ca

Ligaments are the most important stabilizer of elbow. However, the stress of ligaments is hard to measure because of the complex biomechanical environment in the elbow. Our objective was to develop a human elbow finite element model and to validate it by a comparison with previous experimental data. Then several different ligaments injury conditions and elbow flexion were simulated to analyse the elbow instability and to stress the biomechanical consequences. The computational investigation of different effects of ligament constraints of elbow was studied by means of finite element analysis. T

Lacerated flexor tendons close to bony junction are commonly repaired using a pullout suture. However, these injuries very close to the tendon-bone junction can be repaired with robust direct suture repair of the proximal tendon stump with the short residual tendon stump and any local tissues such as periosteum and joint volar plate. Subacute or chronic traumatic rupture at the midpart of the collateral ligaments can also be repaired by "refreshing" the divided ligament ends and repairing the ligament stumps to local tissues with multiple sutures often combined with tightening the elongated jo

We examined the histological appearance and biochemical properties of the healing medial collateral ligament (MCL) of a rabbit knee after combined MCL and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury treated with ACL reconstruction and with or without MCL repair. By so doing, we hoped to understand better our previous bomechanical observations (Ohno et al. 1995) and possibly learn where to focus future investigation into improving the quality of the healing MCL. Ligaments were examined at 6 and 12 weeks of healing. We found healing of all ligaments with hypercellularity and fibroblast elongation al

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries, particularly in young athletes, necessitates optimization of treatment options. The introduction of UCL repair with internal bracing offers an exciting alternative to traditional UCL reconstruction.
PURPOSE: To compare midterm outcomes between UCL repair with internal bracing and UCL reconstruction in competitive athletes.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3.
METHODS: The authors identified competitive athletes who underwent primary UCL repair with internal bracing or UCL reconstruction between 2

In cases of hallux valgus deformity with primary medial collateral ligamentous insufficiency, there will be an abnormal hallux valgus angle with relatively normal intermetatarsal angle and sesamoid positions. Metatarsal osteotomies may not be effective to correct the deformity. Plication of the attenuated medial capsule may not be strong enough to provide long lasting correction of the hallux valgus deformity. We describe a minimally invasive technique of reconstruction of the medial collateral ligament by means of extensor hallucis brevis tendon graft. This can provide a stronger medial const

BACKGROUND: The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) complex of the elbow plays a primary role in valgus and posteromedial stability of the elbow. The anterior oblique ligament (AOL) of the UCL is believed to provide the majority of resistance to external forces on the medial elbow. The transverse ligament (TL) of the UCL is generally thought to have minimal contribution to the elbow's overall stability. However, recent studies have suggested a more significant role for the TL. The primary aim of this study was to identify the TL's contribution to the stability of the elbow joint in determining the

BACKGROUND: Ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) repair with single-strand suture augmentation has been introduced as a viable surgical option for throwers with acute UCL tears. For the original single-strand suture augmentation construct, revision UCL reconstructions can be challenging owing to the bone loss at the site of anchor insertion in the center of the sublime tubercle. This biomechanical study assessed a small-diameter (1.5-mm) ulnar bone tunnel technique for double-strand suture-augmented UCL repair that may be more easily converted to salvage UCL reconstruction if necessary, as well as
