Colloid cysts are cystic lesions that are usually located in the anterior portion of the third ventricle near the foramen of Monro. Rarely, hemorrhagic cysts can lead to acute obstructive hydrocephalus or sudden death. We herein report 2 cases and a review literature. We examine a 47-year old male who presented with progressive headache and a 55-year old male who presented with progressive memory disturbance and unsteady gait. Both cases demonstrated typical imaging features of hemorrhagic colloid cyst, and were histopathologically confirmed. Total excision was achieved in both cases with good

Colloid cysts are rare intracerebral lesions that are predominantly located in the third ventricle. Extraventricular colloid cysts have only rarely been reported but so far there are no reports of a colloid cyst residing in the olfactory groove. A 74-year-old patient underwent a brain computed tomography scan for a mild head trauma that incidentally revealed a space-occupying lesion near the olfactory groove. Brain magnetic resonance imaging that ensued demonstrated a hyperintense lesion in T1, T2, and FLAIR sequences, without evidence of surrounding brain edema. To evaluate the metabolic stat

INTRODUCTION: Colloid cysts are the most common pathologic lesions of the third ventricle. Although they are histologically benign, they may grow and can cause the hydrocephalus. A 5-year-old male patient underwent to surgery with the diagnosis of colloid cyst. In operation, after the anterior transcallosal approach, the cyst was punctured by syringe and obviously pus aspirated.
CONCLUSION: Colloid cysts mostly remain silent and detected incidentally. Although it is rarely defined, rhinorrhea, hypopituitarism, diabetes insipidus, spasmodic torticollis, drop attack, aseptic meningitis, and coe

Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare intracranial tumors, accounting for 0.5% of intracranial tumors. Colloid cysts represent 2% of gliomas, are more common in men than women, and usually are diagnosed between the third and fifth decades of life. The primary presenting complaint of this disorder is headache. The headaches are described as intermittent, severe and intense, and of short duration and usually are located frontally. The main associated features are nausea and vomiting. The headache can be relieved by lying down, which is unusual for headaches secondary to intracranial tumo

OBJECTIVE: A rare case of an extraventricular colloid cyst located in the olfactory groove extending downward into the ethmoid sinus is presented. This is the second reported case in the world literature.
METHODS: A 56-year-old-woman presented with a lesion that was causing hyposmia and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea. The lesion was an extraventricular colloid cyst displacing the left olfactory nerve downward and eroding into the left ethmoid sinus.
RESULTS: The lesion was excised, and the anterior skull base was reconstructed successfully via a unilateral subfrontal approach.
CONCLUSIONS:

OBJECTIVE: The rarity of colloid cysts in children makes it difficult to characterize this entity and offer meaningful advice on treatment. Infrequent case reports exist, but to date there has been no age-specific assessment. The purpose of this study was to define any differences between children and adults who are evaluated and treated for colloid cysts of the third ventricle.
METHODS: Patients with colloid cysts were reviewed and stratified by age. Individuals ≤ 18 years of age were defined as pediatric patients and those > 18 years of age as adults. Clinical and radiographic data, treatme

Stereotactic aspiration is a valuable surgical alternative for colloid cysts, but due to cyst heterogeneity, it is not uniformly successful as the sole treatment in all patients. Since 1981, we performed CT-guided stereotactic aspiration as the initial procedure in 25 patients with colloid cysts. We retrospectively reviewed our experience in the first 22 patients and found that preoperative CT imaging studies accurately determined size and predicted cyst viscosity. The preoperative CT appearance of a hypodense or isodense cyst correlated favorably with successful aspiration. Preoperative MRI p

Stereotactic aspiration is a valuable surgical alternative for colloid cysts when used alone or in conjunction with microsurgical resection. Since 1981, the authors have performed computerized tomography (CT)-guided stereotactic aspiration as the initial procedure in 22 patients with colloid cysts; stereotactic aspiration alone was successful in 11 patients (50%). Of the 11 patients in whom aspiration failed, stereotactic endoscopic resection was attempted in three and was successful in one. Seven patients required a craniotomy and microsurgical removal of the cyst performed via a transcortica

Magnetic resonance was performed in five patients with obstructive hydrocephalus due to surgically proven colloid cyst of the third ventricle. On T1-weighted images two lesions were homogeneously hyperintense and another homogeneously isointense with the surrounding brain parenchyma. On T2-weighted images these three lesions were strongly hypointense except for a hyperintense rim at the periphery. At surgery in these patients the cyst was thin walled and filled with viscous colloidal material. In two patients the content of the lesion was composed of two layers. The outer layer was hyperintens

We present two unique cases of intracranial congenital lesions of different origins. A 29-year-old woman had an angioma of the choroid plexus of the third ventricle and paraventricular region; a small neuroepithelia cyst was also included in the lesion. This case is the first known description of a choroidal angioma in the third ventricle. The other patient, a 39-year-old woman, had a ruptured saccular aneurysm at the junction of the anterior communicating and left anterior cerebral arteries, a cerebellar hemangioma, and a small neuroepithelial cyst with numerous papillary infoldings in the pi

Colloid cysts are among rare benign tumours of the third ventricle. Although the most frequent symptoms are headache and syncope, arrest hydrocephalus or sudden death could appear with colloid cysts. The aim of this pictorial essay was to increase awareness of the clinical presentation, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging spectrum, and treatment options of the colloid cysts. The data of 11 patients with histopathologically and/or clinically proven colloid cyst were analysed, retrospectively; and the neuroradiologic appearances of the cysts were evaluated. The CT and MR

A colloid cyst is a malformation composed of an amorphous, gelatinous material surrounded by epithelial and connective tissue. It is typically located in the third ventricle, leading to signs of increased intracranial pressure and hydrocephalus. In this case report, we discuss a classic presentation of a patient presenting with a colloid cyst of the third ventricle. This includes the patient's symptoms before arriving at the emergency department and presentation upon arrival and during their hospital stay. We also discuss the diagnostic approach to colloid cysts, providing radiographic imaging

Colloid cysts are a rare clinical finding with a unique clinical presentation: non-specific paroxysmal headaches. The current recommended treatment is microsurgery, which poses the greatest risk to the patient but allows complete removal of the cyst to prevent recurrence. A 41-year old man presented with a colloid cyst located in the foramen of Monro causing obstructive hydrocephalus. He had paroxysmal headaches and memory and personality changes. Transcortical transventricle microsurgery was performed to remove the entire cyst. A temporary shunt was placed to prevent post-operative hydrocepha

A colloid cyst, also called a neuroepithelial cyst, is a slow-growing, benign tumor that occurs in the anterior third ventricle. The cyst typically blocks the foramen of Monro, causing obstructive hydrocephalus involving only the lateral ventricles. The most common presenting sign and symptom of a colloid cyst is headache. Less common presenting signs and symptoms include nausea, vomiting, memory loss, mental status changes, gait disorder, and visual disturbances. Surgical resection is the recommended treatment. Meticulous baseline and ongoing neurological assessments are of paramount importan

OBJECTIVE: Colloid cysts (CCs) are histologically benign lesions that carry the risk of causing obstructive hydrocephalus. The indication for surgery for symptomatic cysts is unquestioned; however, the management of incidentally detected lesions has remained controversial. We independently evaluated the CC risk score (CCRS) as a useful risk stratification scheme.
METHODS: The demographics, imaging characteristics, and clinical presentations of 103 patients with CC during a 10-year period were correlated with symptoms and the occurrence of hydrocephalus. The discriminate capacity of the CCRS w

BACKGROUND: Endoscopic resection of colloid cysts is a widely accepted treatment option instead of microsurgery. However, there is still a debate about a potentially higher rate of incomplete resections and recurrence.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate long-term results after endoscopic removal of colloid cysts.
METHODS: Twenty patients underwent endoscopic treatment in our department. Eighteen patients agreed to follow-up examinations. In 17 patients, magnetic resonance images were obtained.
RESULTS: Total cyst resection was achieved in 16 procedures. In 1 pati

OBJECTIVE Colloid cysts are rare, histologically benign lesions that may result in obstructive hydrocephalus and death. Understanding the natural history of colloid cysts has been challenging given their low incidence and the small number of cases in most reported series. This has complicated efforts to establish reliable prognostic factors and surgical indications, particularly for asymptomatic patients with incidental lesions. Risk factors for obstructive hydrocephalus in the setting of colloid cysts remain poorly defined, and there are no grading scales on which to develop standard manageme
