Identification of a novel mitovirus in Colocasia esculenta through high‑throughput sequencing and in-silico miRNA prediction for sequence-specific gene silencing.

Mitoviruses are simple RNA viruses typically associated with fungal mitochondria, although recent studies suggest their presence in plant transcriptomes. In this study, we report the identification and molecular characterization of a novel mitovirus from Colocasia esculenta using high-throughput sequencing (HTS). Analysis of symptomatic leaf tissues revealed a 2,644 nucleotide-long viral genome encoding a single open reading frame (ORF) for an RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) of 544 amino acids. The viral sequence, tentatively named Colocasia esculenta associated mitovirus 2 (CeaMV2), showe

Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) Corms and Cormels Cultivated in Brazil as Plant-Based Food Ingredients: Nutritional, Microstructural, and Pasting Properties.

Taro (Colocasia esculenta (L.) Schott) is a carbohydrate-rich tuber crop cultivated in Brazil, with potential for the development of plant-based food ingredients. However, taro corms are less commercially valued than cormels, despite their possible nutritional and technological relevance. This study compared the physicochemical, nutritional, microstructural, and pasting properties of taro corms (C), cormels (CL), and their isolated starches (CS and CLS). Cormels showed lighter and more homogeneous pulp, whereas corms had greater size and shape regularity. Nutritionally, corms contained higher

Assessing the Potential of Multispectral UAV-Derived Vegetation Indices for Estimating Water Use of Taro (Colocasia esculenta) Under Different Weed Management Practices.

Water availability is typically a limiting factor in rainfed sub-Saharan farming systems. Smallholder farmers in this region grow neglected and underutilized crops (NUCs) such as taro to supplement food shortages. Understanding the water use of NUCs could contribute to improving productivity. Traditional methods of monitoring actual evapotranspiration (ETa) are point-based and do not capture the variability in smallholder fields. In contrast, empirical models that use vegetation indices derived from multispectral unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have demonstrated the potential to provide reliab

Potential of commonly consumed green leafy vegetables for their antioxidant capacity and its linkage with the micronutrient profile.

Green leafy vegetables (GLV) offer a cheap but rich source of a number of micronutrients and other phytochemicals having antioxidant properties. The potential of 30 GLV in the raw and cooked form as natural antioxidant supplements for vegetarian diets was assessed. There was a large variability in the values of antioxidant activity of various GLV extracts in the lipid micelles (1.5-5.6 mM vitamin E/100 g for raw samples and 1.6-3.8 mM vitamin E/100 g for cooked samples). Similar to thiobarbituric acid reactive substances values, the super oxide scavenging ability values also exibited large var

Tarin stimulates granulocyte growth in bone marrow cell cultures and minimizes immunosuppression by cyclo-phosphamide in mice.

Chemotherapeutic drugs, such as cyclophosphamide, cause severe immunosuppression and patients become susceptible to infections. Based on this, the immunomodulatory potential of tarin, a lectin from Colocasia esculenta, was evaluated in bone marrow cell cultures and in cyclophosphamide-immunosuppressed mice. Tarin promoted maintenance of hematopoietic progenitors and repopulation of Gr1 cells in vitro which was supported by in vivo results. In immunosuppressed mice, tarin increased bone marrow cell numbers and altered cell profile distribution by enhancing the frequency of Gr1+ progenitors, inc
