Pulmonary botryomycosis in a Scottish highland steer.

Pertinent necropsy findings in a 5 1/2-year-old Scottish Highland steer with chronic intractable pneumonia and cough were limited to the pulmonary system. The accessory lobe of the lung was collapsed, scarred, and multifocally adhered to parietal pleura. A polypoid mass almost completely obstructed the lobar bronchus and protruded into the trachea; mucopurulent exudate distended more distal bronchi. Botryomycosis was diagnosed when histologic examination revealed pyogranulomatous pneumonia with eosinophilic granules and "club" formation surrounding colonies of gram-positive cocci. Staphylococc

Pathogen and Hemocyte Dynamics in Three Apiaries Across a Bee Season.

Honey bees are dying due to a disease complex consisting of viruses, parasites, chemicals, nutritional deficiencies, and management problems. In the present study, pathogens and hemocytes were analyzed in honey bee hemolymph samples using third-generation sequencing and flow cytometry in three apiaries over a honey bee season. Using nanopore sequencing, several viruses and bacteria were identified, including the first reported presence in European honey bees of La Jolla virus and Apis rhabdovirus 5. Seasonal pathogen peaks were found, with spring and summer showing the highest loads which coin

Infestation of Japanese native honey bees by tracheal mite and virus from non-native European honey bees in Japan.

Invasion of alien species has been shown to cause detrimental effects on habitats of native species. Insect pollinators represent such examples; the introduction of commercial bumble bee species for crop pollination has resulted in competition for an ecological niche with native species, genetic disturbance caused by mating with native species, and pathogen spillover to native species. The European honey bee, Apis mellifera, was first introduced into Japan for apiculture in 1877, and queen bees have been imported from several countries for many years. However, its effects on Japanese native ho

'All the Marks of a Swindle': Walter Sidney Bromhead and the dividends of whiteness.

Between his birth in 1873 and his death in 1944, Walter Sidney Bromhead lived an eventful life. He owned land on four continents, sat on the board of several fraudulent insurance companies, published in the Eugenics Review, was mocked in Australia's parliament, briefly ran colonial Kenya's largest white veterans' association, and claimed he met nearly every notable person of the twentieth century from Shackleton to Lenin. Yet his life's work centred around his obsession with starting a global social movement he dubbed 'Fedrity'. By binding Britain's colonies into a global federation of farming

Mesenchymal stem cell therapy improved outcome of early post-traumatic shoulder osteonecrosis: a prospective randomized clinical study of fifty patients with over ten year follow-up.

PURPOSE: Post-traumatic osteonecrosis of the humeral head has a risk of progression to collapse in absence of treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of mesenchymal stem cell grafting of the pre-collapse humeral head (study group) in adult patients with osteonecrosis and to compare the results with a simple core decompression without cells (control group). Patients After inclusion and randomization of 50 patients, 26 patients were enrolled in a single-blinded study for the cell therapy group. Twenty-four other patients were treated with simple core decompression withou

Swabbing Prairie Dog Burrows for Fleas That Transmit Yersinia pestis: Influences on Efficiency.

Scientists and health-care professionals sometimes use a swabbing technique to collect fleas from rodent burrows, and later test the fleas for Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of plague. Detection of Y. pestis is enhanced when large pools of fleas are available. The following study investigated factors that might affect the rate at which fleas are collected from burrows in colonies of black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus). Data were collected from 13 colonies in New Mexico during 0600-1000 hours, June-August 2010-2011. Fleas were scarce on swabs inserted into burrows that were n

Functional and structural changes in a canine model of hereditary primary angle-closure glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To characterize functional and structural changes in a canine model of hereditary primary angle-closure glaucoma. METHODS: Intraocular pressure (IOP) was evaluated with tonometry in a colony of glaucomatous dogs at 8, 15, 18, 20, and 30 months of age. Retinal function was evaluated using electroretinography (scotopic, photopic, and pattern). Examination of anterior segment structures was performed using gonioscopy and high-frequency ultrasonography (HFU). RESULTS: A gradual rise in IOP was observed with an increase in age: 8 months, 14 mm Hg (median value); 15 months, 15.5 mm Hg; 18

Cardiovascular collapse and vascular permeability changes in an ovine model of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus sepsis.

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections with severe outcomes such as sepsis and septic shock are progressively increasing in both the community and in hospital settings. We hypothesized that overexpression of reactive nitrogen and oxygen species and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) play a pivotal role in cardiovascular collapse associated with vascular hyperpermeability in MRSA sepsis. Twelve sheep were surgically prepared and randomized into a control (noninjured; n = 6) and a sepsis (injured; n = 6) group. Animals in the sepsis group were subjected to cotton sm

Treatment of osteonecrosis with autologous bone marrow grafting.

Core decompression with bone graft is used frequently in the treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head. Many different techniques have been described. In the current series, grafting was done with autologous bone marrow obtained from the iliac crest of patients operated on for osteonecrosis of the hip. The results of a prospective study of 189 hips in 116 patients treated with core decompression and autologous bone marrow grafting are reported. Patients were followed up from 5 to 10 years. The outcome was determined by the changes in the Harris hip score, by progression in radiographic st

Effects of bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells from healthy or acute respiratory distress syndrome donors on recipient lung-injured mice.

OBJECTIVE: The advantage of using autologous bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells to treat acute respiratory distress syndrome patients is to prevent immunological rejection. However, bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells may be altered by different acute respiratory distress syndrome etiologies, resulting in questionable efficacy and thus limited clinical application. We aimed to investigate the effects of bone marrow-derived mononuclear cells obtained from healthy and acute respiratory distress syndrome donors on pulmonary and extrapulmonary acute respiratory distress syndrome. Unusual indication of Cell therapy for hip osteonecrosis after pregnancy.

PURPOSE: Osteonecrosis is a rare event during or after pregnancy. Due to the low number of cases, there is no report of long-term results after conservative surgery in this population. METHOD: From 1992 to 2010, 145 consecutive female patients with unilateral symptomatic (94 stage I and 51 stage II) left hip osteonecrosis (ON) related to pregnancy were treated between 4 and 16 months after delivery with percutaneous mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) injection obtained from bone marrow concentration. Deformed Wing Virus infection induces immunosuppression and gut dysbiosis in honey bees.

BACKGROUND: The global decline of honey bee health, driven by multiple stressors impairing immunity, threatens both natural and managed ecosystems. Deformed Wing Virus (DWV) is often found at high loads in collapsing colonies, associated with an immunosuppressive syndrome still poorly understood. This study investigates gut microbiota community patterns associated with different levels of DWV infection, an overlooked aspect which can contribute to the reduction of immunocompetence in infected honey bees. RESULTS: We quantified DWV in nurse bees from the field and compared gut microbiota in ind

Lithium chloride effectively kills the honey bee parasite Varroa destructor by a systemic mode of action.

Honey bees are increasingly important in the pollination of crops and wild plants. Recent reports of the weakening and periodical high losses of managed honey bee colonies have alarmed beekeeper, farmers and scientists. Infestations with the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor in combination with its associated viruses have been identified as a crucial driver of these health problems. Although yearly treatments are required to prevent collapses of honey bee colonies, the number of effective acaricides is small and no new active compounds have been registered in the past 25 years. A case of multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis with collapse of the left lung after hemoptysis.

An 82-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis, defined as resistance to both isoniazid and rifampicin. Chest X-ray showed massive infiltrates with a large cavitary lesions in the left lung field. No antituberculous agents were useful in improving her clinical condition and at 6th months after admission, she exhibited sudden onset of massive hemoptysis, which was successfully treated by bronchial artery embolization. After hemoptysis, her chest X-ray showed collapse of the left lung and computed tomography showed a coagula-like shadow in the left

Tsetse salivary gland hypertrophy virus: hope or hindrance for tsetse control?

MANY SPECIES OF TSETSE FLIES (DIPTERA: Glossinidae) are infected with a virus that causes salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH), and flies with SGH symptoms have a reduced fecundity and fertility. The prevalence of SGH in wild tsetse populations is usually very low (0.2%-5%), but higher prevalence rates (15.2%) have been observed occasionally. The successful eradication of a Glossina austeni population from Unguja Island (Zanzibar) using an area-wide integrated pest management approach with a sterile insect technique (SIT) component (1994-1997) encouraged several African countries, including Ethiop

The genomic identity of early smallpox in South America.

Smallpox was a major driver of population collapse in the Americas after European contact, yet the genetic identity of the causal strains remains unknown. Here, we report the first ancient smallpox genomes in the Americas, dating to approximately 1492-1631 common era (CE), recovered from two Inca-Colonial individuals in northern Chile. These genomes form a now-extinct lineage that diverged around 1296 CE, after the splitting of early medieval European strains but before the emergence of modern variola lineages, providing direct molecular evidence for smallpox introduction through European colo

Possible ctenophoran affinities of the Precambrian "sea-pen" Rangea.

The Namibian Kuibis Quartzite fossils of Rangea are preserved three-dimensionally owing to incomplete collapse of the soft tissues under the load of instantaneously deposited sand. The process of fossilization did not reproduce the original external morphology of the organism but rather the inner surface of collapsed organs, presumably a system of sacs connected by a medial canal. The body of Rangea had tetraradial symmetry, a body plan shared also by the White Sea Russian fossil Bomakellia and possibly some other Precambrian frond-like fossils. They all had a complex internal anatomy, smooth

Decreased Osteogenic Activity of Mesenchymal Stem Cells in Patients With Corticosteroid-Induced Osteonecrosis of the Femoral Head.

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis (ON) of the femoral head occurs when cells of trabecular bone spontaneously die. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) have been introduced into the femoral head in an attempt to halt progression of the disease. The purpose of this study was to functionally compare MSCs in patients with ON of the femoral head with patients without. METHODS: Mesenchymal stem cells were isolated from 20 patients with corticosteroid-induced ON and 10 controls without. Colony-forming unit and proliferation assays were used to assess MSC proliferation. Mesenchymal stem cells were differentiated i

Shifts in the microbiome and virome are associated with stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD).

Stony coral tissue loss disease (SCTLD) is a rapidly spreading lethal coral disease, the etiology of which remains poorly understood. In this study, using deep metagenomic sequencing, we investigated microbial and viral community dynamics associated with SCTLD progression in the Caribbean stony coral Diploria labyrinthiformis. We assembled 264 metagenome-assembled genomes and correlated their abundance with disease phenotypes, which revealed significant shifts in both the prokaryotic microbiome and virome. Our results provide clear evidence of microbial destabilization in diseased corals, sugg

Impact of salivary gland hypertrophy virus infection on the mating success of male Glossina pallidipes: consequences for the sterile insect technique.

Many species of tsetse flies are infected by a virus (GpSGHV) that causes salivary gland hypertrophy (SGH). Female Glossina pallidipes (Austen) with SGH symptoms (SGH+) have reduced fecundity and SGH+ male G. pallidipes are unable to inseminate female flies. Consequently, G. pallidipes laboratory colonies with a high prevalence of SGH have been difficult to maintain and have collapsed on several occasions. To assess the potential impact of the release of SGH+ sterile male G. pallidipes on the efficacy of an integrated control programme with a sterile insect technique (SIT) component, we examin
