Mitigating Legionella spp. risk in an Australian healthcare facility using on-site electrochemical water disinfection.

Legionella spp. are Gram-negative bacteria present in natural and engineered water systems that can cause legionellosis (Legionnaires' disease and Pontiac fever). When present in biofilms of healthcare facilities, they are a likely source of legionellosis for immunocompromised patients. The objective of this study was to evaluate an electrochemical water disinfection system to produce and dose hypochlorous acid (HOCl) to reduce this risk in a hospital with systemic Legionella spp. contamination. Furthermore, Legionella spp. colony counts were compared to quantitative polymerase chain reaction

Monitoring the characteristics of cultivable halophilic microbial community during salted-ripened anchovy (Engraulis anchoita) production.

The halophilic microbial community of the salted-ripened anchovy process was studied. Samples from raw materials (salt and fresh anchovies) and from the stages of brining and ripening were collected and analyzed for their bacterial counts at 15 and 20% NaCl. No halophilic colonies were found in fresh anchovy and counts of about 103 CFU/g were determined in salt samples. A fluctuation of bacterial counts during the process was found. At the end of brining, ~104 CFU/g were determined in anchovy samples and this value was reduced to not detectable counts at the beginning of the ripening stage. Af

Multi-method in vitro assessment of ultraviolet-C treatment against conidia and hyphal fragments of Botrytis cinerea.

UNLABELLED: Botrytis cinerea is a significant postharvest fungal pathogen responsible for substantial losses in a variety of fresh produce. Ultraviolet-C (UV-C) irradiation is a potential intervention that could reduce postharvest losses due to fungal disease. However, the diversity of fungal reproductive forms and lack of standardization in antifungal assessment methods complicate the evaluation of UV-C efficacy. This study evaluated the in vitro antifungal efficacy of UV-C against B. cinerea conidia and hyphal fragments (HF) treated in liquid suspension and on agar surfaces. B. cinerea viabi

Assessing the Listeria monocytogenes transference during mechanical slicing of mozzarella cheese.

Listeriosis is a foodborne disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes (LM) and has been linked to the consumption of sliced mozzarella cheese. This study aimed to assess the LM transference during mechanical slicing of mozzarella cheese and its growth during refrigerated storage. Mozzarella cheese was contaminated with LM and 100 slices containing approximately 5 log CFU/slice were produced. Next, 100 slices of non-contaminated cheese were sliced using a contaminated blade (3.67log CFU/10 cm2). LM was quantified on the blade and slices right after slicing and after storage at 10 °C for 10 and 15

LYTIC CAPABILITY OF BACTERIOPHAGES (FAMILY MYOVIRIDAE) ON BURKHOLDERIA PSEUDOMALLEI.

Burkholderia pseudomallei, a gram-negative bacillus found in soil and water, is the causative agent of melioidosis. It can produce a biofilm, which increases resistance to antibacterial agents. Bacteriophages (phages) have been suggested as alternative antibacterial agents. In this study, the ability of six phages (family Myoviridae) to lyse B. pseudomallei isolates was examined using a microplate phage virulence assay. The six phages were more efficient in lysing soil than clinical B. pseudomallei isolates. Phage ST79 had the highest lytic capability, independent of inoculating phage quantity

The influence of various factors on the human resident skin flora.

Various factors, e.g. prolonged occlusion, skin disinfectants, systemic antimicrobials, can have an impact on the ecosystem of the normal human skin flora for a short time. These impacts are of clinical importance in the treatment of some skin diseases, where members of the normal human skin flora are involved in the pathogenesis of the disease, e.g. Propionibacterium acnes in acne vulgaris, Corynebacterium species in erythrasma, trichomycosis palmellina and pitted keratolysis, Pityrosporum orbiculare/ovale in Pityriasis versicolor, Pityrosporum folliculitis and others. Time-Dependent Changes in the Intestinal Microbiome of Gilts Exposed to Low Zearalenone Doses.

Zearalenone is a frequent contaminant of cereals and their by-products in regions with a temperate climate. This toxic molecule is produced naturally by Fusarium fungi in crops. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of low zearalenone doses (LOAEL, NOAEL and MABEL) on the intestinal microbiome of gilts on different days of exposure (days 7, 21 and 42). Intestinal contents were sampled from the duodenal cap, the third part of the duodenum, jejunum, caecum and the descending colon. The experiment was performed on 60 clinically healthy gilts with average BW of 14.5 ± 2 kg, divided

Photodynamic inactivation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by broad-spectrum visible light.

Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is the causative agent of tuberculosis, a major infectious disease causing substantial global morbidity and mortality. The growing incidence of antibiotic-resistant strains highlights the urgency of identifying alternative strategies capable of targeting persistent and resistant forms of Mtb. This study evaluates the effectiveness of photodynamic inactivation (PDI) using visible light within the 400-420 nm range against a clinical Mtb isolate. The isolate was subjected to controlled LED exposure under biosafety level-3 conditions, with viability assessed via co

Infection risk by dermatophytes during storage and after domestic laundry and their temperature-dependent inactivation.

In the developed countries infections of the feet (tinea pedis, athlete's foot) and nails (onychomycosis) with the anthropophile fungus Trichophyton rubrum are most common. We examined the propagation of dermatophytes before and during domestic laundering. About 10% of the infectious material was transferred from contaminated textiles to sterile textiles during storage in a clothes basket simulation indicating a high infection risk during storage. This was evaluated with two quantification techniques: cultivation with subsequent colony counting and tracing of radioactively labelled propagating

Evaluation of Viable Mutans Streptococci Colony Count and Its Association with Salivary Immunoglobulin A with Severity of Early Childhood Caries: An Original Research.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Though dental caries has a multifactorial etiology, the specific factor that results in its high rate of transmissibility is the microbial component, that is, mutans streptococci (MS), and its association with protective factors, such as salivary immunoglobulin A (S-IgA). Hence, it is important to identify such risk and protective factors associated with early childhood caries (ECC) using isolation of the colonies based on the fundamental method of colony morphology, adjunct with an advanced fully automated platform, to minimize human errors. In vitro susceptibility testing of Malassezia furfur against rilopirox.

The in vitro antifungal activity of the new hydroxypyridone antimycotic rilopirox has been evaluated against 29 separate clinical isolates of Malassezia (M.) furfur obtained from patients with pityriasis versicolor, seborrhoeic dermatitis or dandruff. Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of rilopirox were measured by the agar dilution technique and, in comparison, by a recently described microdilution method with colorimetric detection of the MIC end points. Rilopirox was found to be able to inhibit growth of all clinical yeast isolates. For the investigated M. furfur strains MIC values fr
