How strong is the administrative backbone of ethical governance? A descriptive cross-sectional study of health research ethics committees in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Health research ethics committees (HRECs) provide the administrative backbone of ethical governance by safeguarding the rights, safety and well-being of research participants and ensuring the ethical conduct of health research. Effective ethical oversight depends not only on rigorous protocol review but also on robust governance, competent personnel, adequate infrastructure, sustainable institutional support and efficient administrative systems. Despite their critical role, evidence on the administrative functionality of HRECs in Tanzania remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To assess the

COVID-19 in Patients with Hematologic Malignancies: A Single-Center Experience

Introduction:The emergence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and subsequent coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted hematologic malignancies (HM) care worldwide. Reported risk factors for severe COVID-19 presentation include older age, medical comorbidities, and cardiac disease - many of which apply to patients with HM (Guan et al., 2020; Zhou et al., 2020). Additionally, patients with HM may be at even higher risk of infections with or complications from SARS-CoV-2 due to immune dysfunction from their underlying disease or treatment (He et al., 2020).

Does Residency Selection Criteria Predict Performance in Orthopaedic Surgery Residency?

BACKGROUND: More than 1000 candidates applied for orthopaedic residency positions in 2014, and the competition is intense; approximately one-third of the candidates failed to secure a position in the match. However, the criteria used in the selection process often are subjective and studies have differed in terms of which criteria predict either objective measures or subjective ratings of resident performance by faculty. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Do preresidency selection factors serve as predictors of success in residency? Specifically, we asked which preresidency selection factors are associated

Francis Sibson (1814-1876): A serial specialist.

In a diverse career Sibson performed some of the earliest saline infusions for cholera, some of the first experiments with curare and its possible use in rabies and he was among the first British authors to distinguish between typhoid and typhus. He published on respiratory physiology and mechanisms of respiration and on the anatomy of the chest and abdominal viscera including the changes caused by movement and disease. He investigated the use of ether and chloroform to treat neuralgia, probably practised surgical anaesthesia and sat on a commission investigating the safety of chloroform. His

Management of mixed urinary incontinence: IUGA committee opinion.

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: Mixed urinary incontinence (MUI) is defined by the International Urogynecology Association (IUGA) and International Continence Society as the complaint of involuntary leakage of urine associated with urgency and also with exertion, effort, sneezing or coughing. It therefore implies the coexistence of both stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and urgency urinary incontinence (UUI). MUI is a heterogeneous diagnosis that requires an assessment of its individual components of SUI and UUI. Management requires an individualised approach to the symptom components. The aim of

ACR white paper: task force on timing of oral boards in diagnostic radiology.

The direction that the American Board of Radiology intends to follow relative to the diagnostic radiology oral board examination has risen quickly up the list of fundamental challenges for the radiology community. The formation of an ACR task force to study these changes was necessary, because this issue carries a high stake for the future of the profession and the patients we serve. After a careful review of the potential impacts, the committee discovered that consensus would be difficult to achieve relative to the merits of these changes. Accordingly, this white paper is focused objectively

AGA Clinical Practice Update on Role of EUS-Guided Gallbladder Drainage in Acute Cholecystitis: Commentary.

DESCRIPTION: Endoscopic gallbladder drainage is a feasible and efficacious alternative to percutaneous drainage in the management of acute cholecystitis for high-risk surgical candidates. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided gallbladder drainage and per-oral cholecystoscopy is facilitated by the use of lumen-apposing metal stents. Endoscopic ultrasound-guided gallbladder drainage should be performed by those expert in advanced therapeutic endoscopic ultrasound. Multidisciplinary collaboration between interventional radiology and surgery is paramount in the care of these patients. Choosing the optimal

Report from the UK and Eire Association of Genetic Nurses and Counsellors (AGNC) supervision working group on genetic counselling supervision.

The Association of Genetic Nurses and Counsellors (AGNC) is the professional organisation which represents genetic counsellors and genetic nurses in the United Kingdom (UK) and Eire. The AGNC recognises that genetic counselling supervision is instrumental to the practice, training and registration of genetic counsellors in the UK. The AGNC formed a Supervision Working Group, whose terms of reference were to collate information on supervision and create a list of 'best practice' recommendations for its genetic counsellor members. This report delivers the findings from the Supervision Working Gr

Community involvement in developing policies for genetic testing: assessing the interests and experiences of individuals affected by genetic conditions.

Because the introduction of genetic testing into clinical medicine and public health creates concerns for the welfare of individuals affected with genetic conditions, those individuals should have a role in policy decisions about testing. Mechanisms for promoting participation range from membership on advisory committees to community dialogues to surveys that provide evidence for supporting practice guidelines. Surveys can assess the attitudes and the experiences of members of an affected group and thus inform discussions about that community's concerns regarding the appropriate use of a genet
