Twenty-three patients with Behçet's disease (BD) meeting the criteria of the international group for classification and diagnosis of BD (17 men and 6 women) were typed for HLA antigens class 1. The patients group was multinational, of them 19 were Caucasoids and 4 Mongoloids. It was shown that HLA B5 in Caucasoids occurred more frequently vs normal controls (73.7% and 15.5%, respectively). Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus strains isolated in different geographic areas were characterized by changes in electrophoretic mobility (EPM) of virus-specific proteins. Analysis of EPM of intracellular virus-specific protein E and other high molecular proteins of 42 TBE virus strains revealed similarity among the majority of them, with the exception of several strains including the Sophyin strain (Far-Eastern subtype). The most marked variability in the electrophoretic behavior of virus-specific proteins was observed with low molecular proteins prM, ns4b, ns2a.

Genome polymorphism by the locus (CAAA)n was studied in 69 strains of Yersinia pestis isolated from natural foci of the former Soviet Union. The polymorphism was found to be represented by ten alleles in chromosomes, which could be regarded as evidence of variability of this VNTR-locus (diversity index, DI = 0.86). After 30 years of control, epidemic diphtheria returned to the Soviet Union in 1990. To develop control strategies, the immunogenicity of the tetanus and diphtheria toxoids (Td) vaccine was assessed. Workers who were 18-67 years old received two Td immunizations separated by 30 days. A neutralization assay determined diphtheria antitoxin (DAT) on enrollment and on days 7, 30, 60, and 425. Mucopolysaccharidosis type I (MPS-I) is an autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder resulting from a deficiency of the lysosomal protein alpha-l-iduronidase (IDUA). Patients present within a broad spectrum of phenotypes from severe (Hurler syndrome) to clinically less severe (Scheie syndrome). Population-based seroepidemologic data on mumps have not been available in Israel since 1987, and the effects of mass immigration from the Commonwealth of Independent States during the 1990s have not been investigated. We conducted a seroprevalence study of mumps antibodies among 353 Israeli military recruits aged 18-19, based on a representative sample of sera collected in 1999.
