Commotio cordis is a rare and fatal mechano-electric arrhythmogenic syndrome, occurring mainly during sports activities. The present study describes two similar cases of sudden death caused by commotio cordis associated with homicide. The two decedents were both 15-year-old male teenagers. Both collapsed within several minutes after being punched in the precordial region, as observed by witnesses at the scenes. Although electrocardiograms were not recorded at the scenes or the hospitals, the sudden onset of cardiovascular, respiratory, and neural symptoms were consistent with sudden cardiac de

Death due to low-energy chest wall trauma, commotio cordis, may occur in young athletes. Death is sudden and usually refractory to even immediate resuscitation efforts. Herein are described the clinical, angiographic, and hemodynamic data of a rare survivor. These observations suggest that commotio cordis not only may be secondary to ventricular fibrillation, but also may be associated with coronary vasospasm or segmental changes in myocardial contractility.

Commotio cordis or cardiac concussion is a rare and fatal mechano-electric arrhythmogenic syndrome. It is the second most common cause of sudden cardiac death in young athletes. It is most commonly associated with a sports-related injury, wherein, there is a high-velocity impact between a projectile and the precordium, causing arrhythmia that leads to the immediate death of the individual without cardiac resuscitation. On autopsy, the heart is structurally normal. With increasing awareness of this condition and community training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, survival rates have been impro

Commotio cordis or ventricular fibrillation caused by a blow to the chest is a rare cause of cardiac arrest in a well child. We report a case of a young child falling from a low height landing chest first with rapid onset of unconsciousness, apnoea and cyanosis. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was given by parents under telephone instruction from an ambulance dispatch centre. On arrival of officers, 7 min after the fall, ventricular fibrillation was present but responded to defibrillation (biphasic 3 J/kg). No clinical or CT evidence of chest or brain trauma was present and investigations (ECGs,

BACKGROUND: There have been numerous reports of sudden cardiac death attributable to the condition of commotio cordis. Primarily, these are reports from the USA. Although three Australian cases have been mentioned in the published literature, the present case appears to be the first described Australian case.
METHODS: A man was brought to the Emergency Department after sudden collapse while playing cricket. His medical history was suggestive of hitting by a cricket ball while batting.
RESULTS: The epidemiology and mechanism of arrhythmia induction in commotio cordis are discussed. The emerge

BACKGROUND: Commotio cordis, sudden cardiac death (SCD) caused by relatively innocent impact to the chest, is one of the leading causes of SCD in sports. Commercial chest protectors have not been demonstrated to mitigate the risk of these SCDs.
METHODS: To develop a standard to assess chest protectors, 4 phases occurred. A physiological commotio cordis model was utilized to assess variables that predicted for SCD. Next, a surrogate model was developed based on data from the physiological model, and the attenuation in risk was assessed. In the third phase, this model was calibrated and validat

A 16-year-old male developed palpitations immediately following chest impact with a soccer ball. The patient was noted to have ventricular flutter in a delayed presentation that was successfully treated. While ventricular fibrillation is the predominant arrhythmia following commotio cordis, ventricular flutter may occur as well. Ventricular flutter may be better tolerated in a young athletic individual with structurally normal heart and may lead to a delayed presentation.

We report a rare case of commotio cordis caused by traffic injury. The patient was a 60-year-old female driver who suffered severe steering wheel impact to the chest during a head-on collision in which her car overturned. She had no history of cardiac disease. Emergency medical services arrived at the scene within 12 minutes of the accident. Evidence of ventricular fibrillation led the paramedics to carry out immediate defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator. Restoration of spontaneous circulation was confirmed within 2 minutes, along with establishment of sinus rhythm and norm

OBJECTIVE: Athletic field risks associated with blunt, nonpenetrating chest blows (commotio cordis) are receiving increasing attention, but the epidemiology of these events is incomplete.
METHODS: We assessed our Sudden Death in Young Athletes Registry, 1980-2008, to formulate a clinical profile of those sudden deaths attributed to commotio cordis (and other causes) occurring in competitive lacrosse, the most rapidly growing youth sport in the United States.
RESULTS: Twenty-three sudden deaths or cardiac arrests were identified in high school and college lacrosse participants. Ages were 18 +

PURPOSE: Commotio cordis is sudden cardiac death caused by a relatively innocent blow to the left chest wall. Adolescents account for the majority of the cases; whether this is due to the higher frequency of adolescents playing ball sports or whether there is some maturational reduction of risk is not known.
METHODS: In a swine model of commotio cordis, the effect of body weight/size (directly related to age) to the susceptibility of chest impact-induced ventricular fibrillation (VF) is examined.
METHODS: Ball impacts were delivered at escalating velocities from 48.3 to 96.9 km·h (30-60 mph)

Sudden cardiac death is a major health problem and a recurring issue in forensic medicine. Most cases are attributed to congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy, myocarditis, pathology of the coronary arteries, long or short QT interval syndromes, Brugada syndrome or secondary toxic effects of cardioactive drugs. Sudden death caused by Commotio cordis after an accidental fall is very rare in women. Victims are essentially young people who die following a direct blow to the chest sustained during physical activity. In the following, we report a case of an adult with no significant past medical

BACKGROUND: Commotio cordis is an increasingly recognized cause of sudden cardiac death. Although commonly linked with athletes, many events occur in non-sport-related settings.
OBJECTIVES: The goal of this study was to characterize and compare non-sport-related vs sport-related commotio cordis.
METHODS: PubMed and Embase were searched for all cases of commotio cordis from inception to January 5, 2022.
RESULTS: Of 334 commotio cordis cases identified, 121 (36%) occurred in non-sport-related contexts, which included assault (76%), motor vehicle accidents (7%), and daily activities (16%). Pro

Commotio cordis is a rare but life-threatening condition characterized by sudden cardiac arrest resulting from a blunt chest impact. While commotio cordis has traditionally been associated with sports-related activities, a significant proportion of cases occur in non-sport-related settings, such as assaults, motor vehicle accidents (MVAs), and daily activities. This critical review examines the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of non-sports-related commotio cordis cases, highlighting the need for increased awareness and improved management in these contexts. The review anal

UNLABELLED: In this case report, we describe a 23-year-old male with Ebstein's anomaly who experienced out-of-hospital cardiac arrest due to commotio cordis following cliff diving. The patient previously underwent a Cone procedure and re-do reduction tricuspid valvuloplasty. Comprehensive investigations revealed no new ischemic events or structural abnormalities. He received an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator during an uneventful outpatient visit. This is the first reported case of commotio cordis in a patient with Ebstein's anomaly, suggesting a potential increased risk in individuals

Ventricular fibrillation is typically the initial arrhythmia in commotio cordis following precordium impacts that occur within an electrically vulnerable period of the cardiac cycle. Conversely, complete heart block is very rare in this context, and its mechanism and temporal course are poorly understood. The presented case concerns a 12-year-old boy, athletic skier, who developed a transient complete heart block following commotio cordis. The electrocardiographic features, the proposed block level and mechanisms of complete heart block following commotio cordis are discussed.

A motor scooter carrying two 15-year-old boys collided with the back of an open, parked truck. The tailgate of the truck was down and in a horizontal position. At the autopsy of the driver, horizontal tramline bruises were found on the anterior chest, but the thoracic cage was intact. There was a transverse tear of the ascending aorta with adventitial hematoma, but significant bleeding was not found in the pericardial sac or the thoracic cavities. Therefore, it was obvious that cardiovascular collapse occurred immediately after the accident. Neither injuries nor diseases that would cause the i

Commotio cordis is a clinic-pathological syndrome related to sudden death in young people involved in sports activities. It has been described, mainly, in athletes without previous cardiac anomalies who received a minor blow to the chest which produces ventricular fibrillation and cardiac arrest in the absence of structural damage to the ribs, sternum, or heart. There are few reported cases of commotio cordis associated with violent, non-sports related actions, which are commonly considered to be imprudent homicides. We present the case of a 20-year-old man, who was kicked in the chest during
