["Pseudoneurotransmission" and gut microbiome - brain communication in neuropsychiatric disorders].

The gut microbiome, which comprises symbiotic bacteria colonizing the human digestive tract, undergoes dynamic changes during the lifespan, as evidenced by the fact that the number of species and the diversity of their composition decrease significantly with age. The aim of this review is to illuminate bilateral neuroimmunological pathways that determine the role of gut microbiome dysbiosis, not only as a cause but also as a byproduct of many neurodegenerative diseases of the CNS, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), but also in the frame of several behavioral and psy

Epidemiology of communication disorders in childhood phoniatric clinical practice.

INTRODUCTION: Language acquisition and development require an understanding of physical and psychosocial aspects during diagnosis and treatment. At this point, a partnership between phoniatric physicians and other health professionals is often a determinant for favorable prognosis. OBJECTIVE: To identify the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of a pediatric population attending a phoniatric clinical practice. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional cohort. Retrospective, epidemiological study of 297 children, seen in phoniatric appointments between 1976 and 2005. Outcome variables were refer

[Intervention in children with pragmatic language and communication disorders].

AIMS: In this paper we analyse the educational and therapeutic needs of children who present pragmatic disorders in language and communication. DEVELOPMENT: Pragmatic disorders in language and communication stand apart from the other disorders affecting the remaining aspects of language development. Their less specific nature goes beyond the purely linguistic domain and involves wide areas of the patient's affective and social development. CONCLUSIONS: Not only is it necessary to adapt the general model of speech therapy intervention, but also to include it within a set of pedagogical (based

Brothers and sisters of young children with communication disorders.

Family-centered approaches have revolutionized the way that clinicians provide services to young children with communication disorders and their families. With greater recognition of the significant impact that siblings have on each other's development and the potential stress and role confusion that siblings may experience when there is childhood disability in the family, it becomes more critical that the needs of siblings are considered and addressed. In this article, a variety of issues are considered relative to siblings' experiences. First, the roles of siblings and their effects on each

Communication disorders: planning a service to meet the needs.

This paper reviews the size of the speech and language-disabled population in the United Kingdom by client groups and attempts to determine (1) those for whom speech therapy might be appropriate, (2) what pattern and level of speech therapy is appropriate and (3) how many speech therapists are required to provide this pattern and level of speech therapy. It is concluded that under present patterns of speech therapy provision, approximately 26 qualified speech therapists may be required per 100,000 population. However, it is argued that speech therapy may be trying to do too much and may be ven

Managing Sensory Impairments and Communication Differences in Psychotic Disorders.

Sensory impairments, including visual and auditory loss, are common across the lifespan and are increasingly recognized as risk factors for psychiatric disorders, particularly psychosis. Evidence suggests that disruptions in sensory processing, multisensory integration, and self-other signal differentiation may contribute to cortical disorganization overlapping with mechanisms implicated in psychotic illness. The psychiatric consequences of sensory impairment are influenced by chronicity and timing of onset, with congenital vs acquired loss conferring differing risks and clinical presentations

Science and pseudoscience in communication disorders: criteria and applications.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this tutorial is to describe 10 criteria that may help clinicians distinguish between scientific and pseudoscientific treatment claims. The criteria are illustrated, first for considering whether to use a newly developed treatment and second for attempting to understand arguments about controversial treatments. METHOD: Pseudoscience refers to claims that appear to be based on the scientific method but are not. Ten criteria for distinguishing between scientific and pseudoscientific treatment claims are described. These criteria are illustrated by using them to assess a

Parent-mediated communication interventions for improving the communication skills of preschool children with non-progressive motor disorders.

BACKGROUND: Children with motor disorders can have difficulties in producing accurate and consistent movements for speech, gesture or facial expression (or a combination of these), making their communication difficult to understand. Parents may be offered training to help recognise and interpret their child's signals and to stimulate their children's development of new communication skills. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of parent-mediated communication interventions, compared to no intervention, treatment as usual or clinician-mediated interventions, for improving the communication

Genotype-specific communication profiles in 79,518 individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders.

RATIONALE: Neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs) are characterised by significant challenges in communication, social interaction, and adaptive function, often impacting quality of life. Previous studies support genetic influences on the communication abilities of individuals with NDD, but were either limited to single genetic conditions or to small cohorts with a limited selection of communication measures. METHODS: We analysed caregiver-reported communication abilities in 79,518 individuals with NDD from the Simons Searchlight and SPARK registries: 4,439 with a CNV-based or monogenic NDD and

Communication difficulties perceived by parents of children with developmental disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The child's inclusion in his/her social-cultural context is very important to his/her adaptation and well-being. The family has a major role as a facilitator of this process. Therefore the difficulties of these families in communicating with children with communication disorders are an important issue to be assessed in order to support orientations to families. PURPOSE: The present study aimed to identify and compare communication difficulties perceived by parents of children with Down Syndrome (DS), Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and Specific Language Impairment (SLI). METHOD

Communication disorders: what to look for, and when to refer.

Communication impairments, with or without a swallowing disorder, are common among older adults. Aphasia, which is usually caused by a focal lesion, can affect spoken and written language, auditory comprehension, and reading ability but by itself does not affect intellectual and cognitive abilities. A cognitive-communicative impairment is related to underlying cognitive deficits in memory, attention, or visual perception and is seen with traumatic brain injury and nontreatable dementia. Voice and speech impairments such as dysarthria and apraxia of speech may lead to self-imposed social isolat

[Rhythm disorders occurring after surgical closure of the interatrial communication].

A detailed evaluation is presented about the frequency and the type of arrhythmias following the surgical correction of 147 cases of atrial septal defects not associated with other congenital heart malformations. A total of 131 arrhythmias occurred in 84 patients. The nodal and the coronary sinus rhythms are the most frequently encountered after surgery, attaining 53,8% of all arrhythmias, while atrial fibrillation or flutter represented about 22%. The follow-up of these arrhythmias concerned the 3 month period immediately after surgery. After that time 20% of the arrhythmias occurring in the
