[Potential analysis of research on speech therapy-led communication training in aphasia following stroke].

HEALTH PROBLEM: In Germany, about 100,000 people currently suffer from aphasia. This speech disorder occurs as a result of neurologic events such as stroke or traumatic brain injury. Aphasia causes major limitations in social participation and quality of life and can be associated with unemployability and social isolation. For affected persons, it is essential to regain and maintain autonomy in daily life, both at work and with family and friends. The loss of autonomy is perceived much more dramatically than the loss of speech. Clients wish to minimise this loss of autonomy in daily life. As f

Theoretical perspectives on language and communication problems in mental retardation and developmental disabilities.

We argue that researchers interested in language and communication problems in mental retardation or any other developmental disorder should view such problems as emerging within the broader context of the behavioral profile, or phenotype, associated with a particular genetic condition. This will require understanding the direct and indirect effects of genes on the development of language and communication and thereby an understanding of the complex relations that exist between language and other dimensions of psychological and behavioral functioning as well as an understanding of the environm

Simultaneous and delayed matching to sample in gesture users and speakers with mental retardation.

Sixty-eight participants with severe mental retardation participated in a study of representational matching to sample. Participants were asked to match objects to identical objects, line drawings, miniature objects (icons), pantomimes, and spoken names. Participants who were successful in these matching tasks also experienced delayed matching tasks. Participants differed in their expressive communication and comparisons were made between symbolic (speaking) individuals, distal gesture users, and contact gesture users. Contact gesture users were significantly worse on identical matching to sam

An evaluation of recent trends in preschool programming for hearing-impaired children.

A longitudinal study was conducted of 139 children with severe and profound hearing losses. The children were between 3 and 5 years of age at the commencement of the 4-year study. The relationship of several background and educational variables with the linguistic, academic, and social development of the children was investigated. Age, hearing loss, and intelligence were related to most of the dependent measures. Relationships involving communication mode (auditory/oral vs. total communication) varied with the measure being considered. The variable of program type (individual vs. group) intera

The effect of a therapy dog on the communication skills of an adult with aphasia.

UNLABELLED: Little evidence-based research has been published within the field of communication disorders on the role of dogs as catalysts for human communication. This single participant study, a point of entry into this realm of research, explores the effects of a therapy dog on the communication skills of a patient with aphasia receiving intensive speech and language therapy within a rehabilitation setting. The researchers conclude that the presence of the dog does have the potential to stimulate both overt social-verbal and social-nonverbal communication. LEARNING OUTCOMES: As a result of

Long-term survival, prognosis, and life-care planning for 29 patients with chronic locked-in syndrome.

We present a life-table analysis of a cohort of 29 locked-in syndrome (LIS) patients followed for a minimum of five years, and we report on the status of the chronic LIS patient. Twenty-nine LIS patients who remained locked-in for more than one year were identified. Inpatient charts were reviewed for demographic, medical, and functional data. Telephone followup was obtained to examine medical complications after discharge, survival, neurologic recovery, care issues, and permanent disposition. A life-table analysis was performed on survival data. Cerebrovascular disease was the most common caus

An analytic hierarchy process analysis for reinforcing doctor-patient communication.

BACKGROUND: As the health paradigm shifts toward patient-centeredness, patients can actively participate in their own treatment. However, there is still a unilateral aspect of doctor-patient communication, so it is necessary to specify obstacles between doctors and patients. Therefore, this study attempted to extract obstacles that block doctor-patient communication and to analyze differences in perception of doctor-patient communication. METHODS: A total of 35 questionnaires composed of brainstorming for the study were distributed, and a total of 21 questionnaires were used for analysis. The

REducing Disruptive and Unnecessary Calls with Education and Electronic Chat for Asynchronous Liaison with RadioLogy: The REDUCE-CALL Study.

OBJECTIVE: Frequent telephone calls to radiology departments are a major source of workflow interruption and inefficiency. Asynchronous messaging integrated within an electronic medical record (EMR) may provide a more efficient communication pathway. This study evaluated the impact of implementing an EMR-integrated chat function, supported by targeted education initiatives, on communication volumes and protocolling workflow in a tertiary academic radiology department. METHODS: A retrospective pre- and post-intervention study compared workflow metrics across 20 matched weekdays before and afte

Does the Amount of Opioid Consumed Influence How Patients Rate Their Experience of Care After Total Knee Arthroplasty?

BACKGROUND: With legislative efforts aimed at optimizing value of care, surgeons performing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are faced with increased responsibility of optimizing patient perception of care. However, pain after TKA may negatively influence patient perception of care, as measured by Press Ganey (PG) patient satisfaction surveys. While opioid-based medications are best suited for acute pain alleviation, awareness of a growing opioid epidemic has spurred efforts to reduce its administration. Therefore, this study assessed the correlation between postoperative opioid consumption and 7
