Gender on the brain: a case study of science communication in the new media environment.

Neuroscience research on sex difference is currently a controversial field, frequently accused of purveying a 'neurosexism' that functions to naturalise gender inequalities. However, there has been little empirical investigation of how information about neurobiological sex difference is interpreted within wider society. This paper presents a case study that tracks the journey of one high-profile study of neurobiological sex differences from its scientific publication through various layers of the public domain. A content analysis was performed to ascertain how the study was represented in five

Unsubscribe, pleeezz!!!: management and training of media competence in computer-mediated communication.

Computer-mediated communication (CMC) has created a new communication divide. Mostly, this division is due to technical and access problems. Overlooked is yet another divide in terms of user communication competence. This contribution focuses on media competence based on theories about communication competence and theories about CMC. Two field studies are presented: an analysis of a virtual seminar chat communication (22 participants, 3 weeks' duration) and an analysis of unsubscribe-failures within 2 years of a German mailing list (average of 1,000 subscriptions). Data from both studies revea

Finding Community and Losing the Plot: Social Media, Healthcare, and Patient Experience.

This commentary examines 12 first-person narratives of sharing health information on social media. Online storytelling simultaneously offers vital support and imposes concerning pressures. The authors describe how digital platforms mitigate isolation by fostering community, solidarity, and practical "community-driven knowledge," particularly around stigmatized conditions, disability, and reproductive health. Across many of the authors' narratives, we see that peer networks can supplement clinical care by providing expertise that shapes treatment decisions and offers support. At the same time,

Leveraging Social Media and AI for Early Community Mental Health Support.

Background Mental health conditions have become a leading cause of disability worldwide, yet stigma, financial barriers, and limited access to care impede effective treatment. Amid these challenges, more people are turning to online platforms like Reddit to express psychological distress and seek informal support. However, these platforms often lack mechanisms to guide users toward professional care. This study explores a community-facing framework that leverages natural language processing and large language models (LLMs) to detect mental health concerns in social media posts and generate per

Audiologic Measures in an Indigenous Community with A2ML1- and FUT2-Related Otitis Media.

Background: Many indigenous peoples are at elevated risk for otitis media, however there is limited information on hearing loss due to OM in these communities. An Indigenous Filipino community that has previously been described with an elevated prevalence of OM that is due to rare A2ML1 variants and a common FUT2 variant underwent additional phenological testing. In this study, we describe the audiologic profiles in A2ML1- and FUT2-related otitis media and the validity of otoscopy and genotyping for A2ML1 and FUT2 variants in screening for otitis media and hearing loss. Method: We analyzed A2M

Communicating anthrax in 2001: a comparison of CDC information and print media accounts.

Information about anthrax released by news media from October 4 to December 3, 2001, was identified, sampled, coded, and compared with information released by CDC during that period using statistical analysis. In addition, communications about two anthrax-related issues were examined in depth. The quantitative analysis showed that, overall, CDC information releases and news coverage tracked fairly closely. When weight was defined as number of mentions, both sources gave the same weight to reports of risk for the population. The news sample gave roughly half the weight as CDC to who was exposed

Learning the mechanism of collective microbial function via random community-media pairing.

In microbial systems, many biochemical functions arise from pathways encoded and executed at the community level. The collective nature of these functions complicates bottom-up efforts to determine each species' contribution. Previous work has shown that regression over randomly sampled datasets of collective functions succeeds at predicting those functions. Building on this top-down idea, this paper asks whether regression can also reveal mechanistic insight into a cross-feeding relationship. For this, we propose extending the random sampling method to vary the growth environment, cultivating

Planning and Implementing Social Media Communication in a Public Health Crisis: An Analytical Perspective.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: The use of social media as a public communication tool by public health service organisations (PHSOs) gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, as the pandemic evolved into a prolonged public health crisis, PHSOs faced challenges in effectively engaging the public with crisis directives. Despite its growing importance, there is scant research on how PHSOs formulated and implemented their social media communication plans as part of their pandemic management. METHODS: Textual analysis and quality appraisal of the first COVID-19 pandemic management plans and the p

Role of digital media campaigns in improving TB health literacy at the community level.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant health issue in the world, and lack of health literacy has resulted in delayed care-seeking practices, non-compliance with treatment regimens, and subsequent stigma in communities with the infection. The objective of the study was to determine whether multi-platform digital media campaigns enhance health literacy of the community on TB. The study involved a cluster-randomized controlled trial with sixteen communities in four districts in twelve months with intervention communities (n = 8) having targeted digital media campaigns and control communities (n = 8)

Overlooking the Obvious: Communication of Efficacy by the Mass Media During the Ebola Crisis in Liberia.

The role of mass media during a public health crisis is an ineluctable part of providing the public with critical information rapidly, particularly messages about self- and response efficacy. However, little is known about the role local news media play in disseminating efficacy information during infectious disease outbreaks. Here, we use the 2014 Ebola outbreak in Liberia as a case to explore this question. We content analyzed newspaper and radio messages disseminated between March 2014 and March 2015, during the midst of the outbreak. Results show that both radio programs and newspaper arti

An overview of acute otitis media in Australian Aboriginal children living in remote communities.

Australian Aboriginal children experience early, persistent and severe middle ear infections. We conducted a review of the medical literature that addressed acute otitis media (AOM) in Australian Aboriginal children. Comparisons were made with the recent guidelines on the diagnosis and management of AOM prepared by the American Academies of Pediatrics and Family Physicians (AAP & AAFP 2004). Otitis media in Aboriginal children living in remote communities begins in the first 3 months of life following early bacterial colonisation. Young children with persistent signs of suppurative disease (bu

Prevalence of otitis media in children in a black rural community in Venda (South Africa).

During mid-winter in 1985, 480 residents from a remote rural community in Venda, South Africa, were examined for the presence of middle and external ear pathology. The children (less than 15 years) numbered 267. The otological examination consisted of (1) pneumatic otoscopic examination, (2) tympanometry, (3) contralateral acoustic reflex. A diagnostic algorithm as proposed by Cantekin et al. was applied to assess the findings. Our data showed the prevalence of otitis media in children to be 8.2%. The highest prevalence was found in the 0-23 months age group. Of 22 children with otitis media,

Exploring the role of social media and online communities in the infertility journey: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: Infertility is a global health challenge with profound psychosocial consequences. Couples navigate this journey within social media and online communities. These digital spaces offer opportunities for support, coping and information exchange, but also expose users to comparison culture, misinformation, and inequities. This scoping review aims to synthesize the available evidence on how social-media and online communities shape the psychosocial experience of infertility, identifying both supportive and harmful dimensions. METHODS: Following Joanna-Briggs Institute methodology PRISMA

Social Media Depictions of the Impact of Noise Pollution on Communication and Mental and Physical Health.

Noise pollution is known to have harmful consequences on various facets of human health, as is recognized by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as by the World Health Organization. Even though noise pollution is a ubiquitous and global problem, the public may not be cognizant of its ill-effects. Often, people go online first to obtain information, and YouTube is the second most used social media platform. For these reasons, the objective of this study was to examine the information available by YouTube to the public about parameters pertaining to noise polluti

Making projects, making friends: online community as catalyst for interactive media creation.

To become full and active participants in today's technologically saturated society, young people need to become creators (and not just consumers) of interactive media. Developing the requisite abilities and capacities is not a wholly individual process; it is important for young people to have access to communities where they can collaborate and share ideas. This article uses the Scratch online community for exploring how different forms of participation and collaboration can support and shape the ways in which young people develop as creators of interactive media. We describe participation i
