"Mom and Tots": Nursing and the Politics of Community Health in 1960s' Detroit.

In 1965, a public health nurse established a community-based maternal and child health center in a predominantly low-income Black neighborhood in Detroit. Funded by the Office of Economic Opportunity and administered by the Visiting Nurses Association, the Mom and Tots Neighborhood Center was staffed by community members and established to serve the needs of the community as identified by the community. This article analyzes the different meanings the center held for the women who staffed the center, the clinicians who provided care, and the community members it served during the turbulent yea

The community in the classroom: designing a distance education community health course for nurses in Solomon Islands.

In 1994 in order to improve educational opportunities for nurses in the Solomon Islands and to try the distance learning model as an educational method, the Distance Education Programme of the Ministry of Health implemented five post basic nursing certificate courses for health workers. This paper focuses on issues and experiences in the development of the Community Health course which in some ways as the most difficult of the courses to prepare. As in many Pacific Island countries, the geographic context of Solomon Islands creates isolated working situations for rural health practitioners, wi

Building Community Among PhD-Prepared Nurses in a Health System.

PhD-prepared nurses are increasingly employed in health care delivery settings, although their roles and contributions are not well publicized. Spotlighting opportunities for PhD-prepared nurses in health systems may encourage more nurses to pursue research doctorates. The goals of this article are to demonstrate the versatility of research doctoral training by highlighting a growing community of PhD-prepared nurses working in a New York City health system and exploring their educational journeys, career pathways, and professional roles; and to describe the process of finding and sustaining a

Community-Based Interventions for Stroke Provided by Nurses and Community Health Workers: A Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Community-based interventions are vital for facilitating poststroke recovery, increasing community participation, and raising awareness about stroke survivors. To optimize recovery and community reintegration, there is a need to understand research findings on community-based interventions that focus on stroke survivors and their caregivers. Although nurses and community health workers (CHWs) are commonly involved in community-based interventions, less is known about their roles relative to other poststroke rehabilitation professionals (physical therapists, occupational therapists,

The nursing home as a hub: boundary work as a key to community health promotion.

This article considers ways in which a nursing home can come to serve as a hub for community health promotion. Inspired by the term 'boundary crossing' (Akkerman and Bakker. Boundary crossing and boundary objects. Rev Educ Res 2011;81:132-69), we suggest the notion of 'boundary work' to illustrate how a nursing home arranges community activities and includes a wide range of participants. In health research, a 'hub' refers to a space in which activities and expertise are 'bound together' over time. The concept of the hub indicates that health organizations have the power to become centres for h

Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Nursing-Home Residents in the Post-Health Care-Associated Pneumonia Era.

TOPIC IMPORTANCE: Pneumonia remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among nursing home (NH) residents, a population characterized by advanced age, frailty, multimorbidity, and functional dependence. The abandonment of the health care-associated pneumonia (HCAP) concept and evolving epidemiology have important implications for diagnosis and management in this setting. REVIEW FINDINGS: Pneumonia in NH residents often presents atypically, with nonspecific symptoms such as confusion or functional decline, complicating timely diagnosis and potentially delaying appropriate treatment. Str

A Nurse-Run Public Health Clinic for Individuals Utilizing a Community Outreach Center.

This article describes a nurse-run clinic for low-income individuals or individuals experiencing homelessness. We conducted a quality improvement project using data from 111 individuals over 194 visits. Thirty-seven percent of patients had difficulty managing their health and 22% reported being in an active health crisis. The visits resulted in patients leaving with their visit goal being met (86%), and 96% of nonemergent cases being diverted from the emergency room. The nurse-run clinic provided access to care and served as a safety net for a vulnerable population, providing support for this

Nursing Unit Communication During a US Public Health Emergency: Natural Experiment.

BACKGROUND: In the second half of 2014, the first case of Ebola virus disease (EVD) was diagnosed in the United States. During this time period, we were collecting data for the Measuring Network Stability and Fit (NetFIT) longitudinal study, which used social network analysis (SNA) to study relationships between nursing staff communication patterns and patient outcomes. One of the data collection sites was a few blocks away from where the initial EVD diagnosis was made. The EVD public health emergency during the NetFIT data collection time period resulted in the occurrence of a natural experim

Community mental health nurses in Wales: self-reported stressors and coping strategies.

There is evidence to suggest that community mental health nurses experience stress and burnout related to their work. Previous research has been limited by a number of methodological problems. One of the problems is that studies have tended to have small or unrepresentative samples, and many researchers have only examined mental health nurses as a subset within their research, which limits the generalizability of the findings. The All-Wales Community Mental Health Nurse (CMHN) Stress Study was set up in order to address this issue. The total population of CMHNs in Wales was surveyed (N = 614)

Pediculosis prevention and control strategies of community health and school nurses: a descriptive study.

Pediculus humanus capitis (pediculosis capitis) affects several million school children in the United States every year and is more prevalent among children than all other childhood communicable diseases combined. Traditional treatment of pediculosis involves the direct application of pesticides to the scalp of infested individuals. Yet, a single-treatment, 100% ovicidal pediculicide has not been developed. Head lice can be easily detected by an educated screener. The National Pediculosis Association (NPA) recommends regular screenings to control lice outbreaks in school settings. Screening is

Community health nurses' knowledge of, attitudes toward, and involvement with adolescent contraceptive services.

A national sample of community health nurses were surveyed to assess their knowledge of, attitudes toward, and involvement with reproductive health services. Results indicated that slightly more than half of the nurses provided or administered contraceptive services to adolescents, although 73% worked in settings where contraceptive services were provided to adolescents. However, only 3.6% indicated that adolescents were their primary client population. The majority (64.3%) stated that they felt as prepared to work with adolescents as they did with adult clients. While 98% were aware that most

Infant health effects of a nurse-community health worker home visitation programme: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Home visiting is supported as a way to improve child health and development. Home visiting has been usually provided by nurses or community health workers (CHWs). Few studies compared the child health advantages of a nurse-CHW team approach over nurse prenatal and postnatal home visiting. METHODS: A randomized trial was conducted with Medicaid-insured pregnant women in Kent County, Michigan. Pregnant women were assigned to a team intervention including nurse-CHW home visitation, or standard community care (CC) including nurse home visitation. Morbidity was assessed in 530 infants

From molecular evolution to the school health room: the role of community-based public health nurses (helsesykepleiere) in one health communication on cross-species influenza transmission in Norway.

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) clade 2.3.4.4b viruses have undergone an unprecedented expansion of host range since 2021, moving from wild birds and poultry into dairy cattle, domestic cats, and other mammals, with sporadic human infections in Europe and North America (Food and Agriculture Organization et al., 2025a; Rolfes et al., 2025). This expansion is underpinned by well-characterised molecular mechanisms of influenza A virus evolution - antigenic drift, gene segment reassortment, and receptor-binding adaptation - that shape the frequency and direction of cross-species s

The Effects of Environmental Health Literacy and Climate Change-Health Perception on Climate Change-Health Nursing Practice Among Korean Community Health Practitioners: A Descriptive Correlational Study.

BACKGROUND: The climate crisis is among the most pressing public health threats of the 21st century, and the climate-health competencies of primary care nursing personnel serving medically underserved areas are a critical determinant of community resilience. Korean Community Health Practitioners (CHPs), established in 1980 under the Special Measures Act for Public Health and Medical Services in Rural Areas, have provided primary health care (PHC) in medically underserved rural regions for over 40 years; however, their environmental and climate-health competencies have rarely been studied.
