BACKGROUND: As community-based healthcare providers, NHS ambulance services may be able to offer easily accessible National Health Service Health Checks (NHSHCs). There is no previous evidence to indicate if this is feasible or if this approach can identify cases of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. We report a service evaluation of an ambulance service delivered NHSHC in North East England.
METHODS: Mixed methods including data from an NHSHC delivered by paramedics and short telephone interviews with participants failing to follow referral advice.
RESULTS: There were 462 NHSHCs del

This study was carried out to determine community health service utilisation and needs of an elderly population living in a geographically defined area of Dublin. A random sample of 208 persons was taken from the 11,852 elderly persons living in the area. Activities of daily living and cognitive function were assessed in the person's own home. Whilst the community health services provided were less than comprehensive, they were targeted to those most in need; the very elderly, those living alone, and persons with a mental or physical disability. Objectively assessed need for further services f

As new government health policy was created and implemented in the late 1910s and the late 1960s, women patients and health practitioners recognized gaps in the new health services and worked together to create better programs. This article brings the histories of the district nursing program (1919-43) and local birth control centres (1970-79) together to recognize women's health provision (as trained nurses or lay practitioners) as community-based and collaborative endeavours in the province of Alberta. The district nursing and birth control centre programs operated under different health pol

OBJECTIVES: Pharmacists are increasingly providing patient-focused services in community pharmacies, including in the area of sexual and reproductive health (SRH). Specific SRH areas have been the focus of research, but a broader perspective is needed to position pharmacists as SRH providers. This review explored research that described and evaluated professional pharmacy services across a broad range of SRH areas.
DESIGN: Scoping review DATA SOURCES: Medline, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus and Cochrane Library (January 2007-July 2020).

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the availability of primary care and wellness services in community mental health centers (CMHCs) and outpatient mental health facilities (OMHFs).
METHODS: This study used data from the 2016 National Mental Health Services Survey to examine the proportion of facilities that reported offering integrated primary care and wellness services (smoking and tobacco cessation counseling, diet and exercise counseling, and chronic disease and illness management). The study used logistic regression to model the odds that a facility offered integrated primary care as a funct

Background and aims Relatively little is known about co-occurring gambling problems and their overlap with other addictive behaviors among individuals attending mental health services. We aimed to determine rates of gambling and substance use problems in patients accessing mental health services in Victoria, Australia. Methods A total of 837 adult patients were surveyed about their gambling and administered standardized screening tools for problem gambling and harmful tobacco, alcohol, and drug use. Prevalence of gambling problems was estimated and regression models used to determine predictor

Despite evidence of differences in smoking behaviour between women and men, few studies have assessed these differences in individuals with mental illnesses. In this cross-sectional study, we explored gender differences in smoking behaviour among 298 individuals (60% male) accessing community mental health services. Individuals with a psychotic disorder as compared with a non-psychotic disorder, and individuals using a greater number of substances were more likely to be male. Readiness to change, daily cigarette consumption and level of nicotine dependence did not differ between men and women;

Farmers have a high rate of suicide (1% of suicides in England and Wales). This study sought to test whether farmers would be less likely to have been in contact with primary or mental health services before death due to their reluctance to seek help. The study also sought to identify other characteristics that differentiated suicide among male farmers from other professional groups. A retrospective case-control design was used comparing male farmers with an age and sex matched control group. Cases were all members of the farming community within the Exeter Health District on whom suicide or o

Examined the utilization rates, treatment dropout rates, and length of treatment for minority adolescents in the mental health care system. Data from the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health from 1983 to 1988 were used. Ss were 853 African Americans, 704 Asian Americans, 964 Hispanics, and 670 whites. Analyses showed that Asian Americans and Hispanics are underrepresented in existing public mental health facilities while African Americans are overrepresented. For dropout rates, no ethnic differences are found between minority groups and whites; but, for length of treatment, Asian Ame

PURPOSE: In this study the costs and benefits of a home health care program were examined to evaluate the economic feasibility of the program.
METHODS: The study participants included 349 patients in the community who had been registered at a home health care center for 5 years. The costs and benefits of the program were analyzed using performance data and health data. The benefits were classified as the effects of pressure ulcer care, skin wound care and catheters management. The program effect was evaluated on the change of progress using transition probability. Benefits were divided into d

BACKGROUND: In Australia, the Home and Community Care (HACC) program provides services in the community to frail elderly living at home and their carers. Surprisingly little is known about the health of people who use these services. In this study we sought to describe health-related factors associated with use of HACC services, and to identify potential opportunities for targeting preventive services to those at high risk.
METHODS: We obtained questionnaire data from the 45 and Up Study for 103,041 men and women aged 45 years and over, sampled from the general population of New South Wales,

Falls are common and often preventable in older people. This short report describes substantial unmet need in relation to falls. Although falling, nearly falling, fear of falling, and activity restriction are common, many people do not seek assistance from healthcare professionals. Only 2% of those who had attended their general practioner (GP), a casualty department, or had been admitted to hospital after a fall were taking drugs to protect against osteoporosis. People who have fallen or are at a risk of falling need to be identified, and local policies and information regarding treatment for

BACKGROUND: Chronic respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), disproportionately impact the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population of Australia. Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) are primary care services, established to provide healthcare in culturally safe environments for Aboriginal people. There is little information about the respiratory services for people with chronic respiratory diseases provided by ACCHSs. AIM: To describe current provision of respiratory services of ACCHSs based in New South Wales (NSW), with a focus

WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: There have been some studies on the experience and community life of mental health clients receiving integrated community mental health service (ICMHS). Evaluation of ICMHS suggests that the service could have positive clinical and social outcomes, but the results are inconclusive. WHAT DOES THE PAPER ADD TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Research studies have focused on clients and/or staff of the ICMHS, while in this study, the experiences and perspectives of family members are also explored. More comprehensive knowledge about the work for, and community life of, people

The intent of this statement is to substantiate the existence of homelessness in virtually every community, illustrate the pervasive health and psychosocial problems facing the growing population of children who are homeless, and encourage practitioners to include homeless children in their health care delivery practices, social services, and advocacy efforts. The recommendations will guide practitioners in taking actions to diminish the severe negative impact that living in temporary shelters has on the health and well-being of developing children. OBJECTIVE: Sexual assessment and counselling is a recommended, yet underprovided and challenging, aspect of cardiac rehabilitation. We compared the views of cardiac healthcare providers and patients in terms of their experiences of communication about sexual issues.
METHODS: Cardiac patients (n=382) completed telephone surveys and hospital cardiac rehabilitation staff (n=60) and general practitioners (n=61) returned postal questionnaires.
RESULTS: Patients reported that sex was rarely discussed, yet nearly half of patients said they would have liked this opportunity. Most general practitione
