Predicting community participation after spinal cord injury in Thailand.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the predictors of community participation after spinal cord injury. DESIGN: Cross-sectional design. METHODS: A total of 139 persons with spinal cord injury living in the community completed 4 instruments: the Impact on Participation and Autonomy (IPA-Thai version), the Craig Hospital Inventory of Environmental Factors (CHIEF-SF-Thai version), the Personal Resource Questionnaire (PRQ2000-Thai version), and a personal history questionnaire. Functional performance was assessed using the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) motor subscale. RESULTS: Participants comprised

Community participation in Chagas disease vector surveillance: systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Vector control has substantially reduced Chagas disease (ChD) incidence. However, transmission by household-reinfesting triatomines persists, suggesting that entomological surveillance should play a crucial role in the long-term interruption of transmission. Yet, infestation foci become smaller and harder to detect as vector control proceeds, and highly sensitive surveillance methods are needed. Community participation (CP) and vector-detection devices (VDDs) are both thought to enhance surveillance, but this remains to be thoroughly assessed. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We se

Epidemiological measures of participation in community health promotion projects.

BACKGROUND: The paper is concerned with the use of epidemiological methods to measure the rates at which different strata of a defined population participate in community health promotion projects. The specific aim was to estimate the incidence rates of participation in projects sponsored by the Western Australian Health Promotion Foundation (Healthway), separately for sociodemographic and health-related behavioural subgroups. METHODS: Data were drawn from Healthway sponsorship projects in 1992. Each sport, arts and racing project was associated with promotion of a health message and creation

Integrating Community Health System Activities and Participation into the Primary Healthcare System for Ensuring Effective Community Participation and Achieving Health Goals in Nigeria.

Introduction: In Nigeria, communities have long organised health and social actions that address local needs but remain weakly integrated into the formal primary healthcare (PHC) system. Understanding these approaches and how they interface with PHC is important for advancing universal health coverage (UHC). Objective: This study examined community-driven health and social actions and explored pathways for their integration into the formal PHC system. Method: A qualitative study was conducted in three purposively selected Nigerian states: Anambra, Akwa Ibom, and Kano. Data were collected throu

Community Participation in and Perception of Community-Directed Treatment with Ivermectin in Kinshasa, DRC.

The success of community-directed treatment with Ivermectin (CDTI) depends on active community participation. We conducted a case study nested in a cross-sectional study in the Binza Ozone Health Zone (ZS) in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, in order to investigate community's knowledges and perceptions of onchocerciasis and on all CDTI's aspects. We interviewed 106 people aged 20 and over, purposively selected, through eight individual interviews and 12 focus groups. Themes used for collecting data were drawn for the Health Belief Model and data were analyzed using a deductive thematic

Communicative Participation in Dysarthria: Perspectives for Management.

Communicative participation is restricted in many conditions associated with dysarthria. This position paper defines and describes the construct of communicative participation. In it, the emergence of this construct is reviewed, along with the predictors of and variables associated with communicative participation in the dysarthrias. In doing so, the features that make communicative participation unique and distinct from other measures of dysarthria are highlighted, through emphasizing how communicative participation cannot be predicted solely from other components of the World Health Organiza

Mass community cycling events: who participates and is their behaviour influenced by participation?

BACKGROUND: Participation in mass physical activity events may be a novel approach for encouraging inactive or low active adults to trial an active behaviour. The public health applicability of this strategy has not been investigated thoroughly. The purpose of this study to was describe participants in a mass cycling event and examine the subsequent effect on cycling behaviour. METHODS: A sample of men and women aged 16 years and older (n = 918) who registered online for a mass cycling event reported cycling ability and number of times they rode a bicycle during the month before the event. On

Predictors of participation in community outpatient psychosocial rehabilitation in schizophrenia.

This study investigated demographic, clinical and neurocognitive factors predicting drop-out from an intensive, community outpatient psychosocial rehabilitation program for people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder. One-hundred and twenty-seven outpatients with DSM-IV schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder participated. Demographic variables of age, sex, education and race/ethnicity were recorded and formal symptom measures and a neurocognitive assessment consisting of measures of crystallized verbal ability, sustained visual vigilance, verbal learning, verbal fluency and proble

Improving community participation to eliminate lymphatic filariasis in American Samoa.

In 2000, the American Samoa Department of Health initiated a campaign of annual mass drug administration (MDA) with albendazole and diethylcarbamazine (DEC) to eliminate transmission of filariasis. Drug coverage was well below prescribed targets in the first three campaigns, ranging from 24 to 52% of the total population. Evaluation findings from a variety of formative research methods identified opportunities to improve MDA coverage and ensuing program modifications resulted in increased drug coverage of 65-71% in the following four annual distributions. Partnering with churches for drug dist

Functional ability, community reintegration and participation restriction among community-dwelling female stroke survivors in Ibadan.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is not gender-discriminatory. Yet, the subject of stroke among females has apparently not received significant attention from clinical researchers. The consequences of stroke include functional and psychosocial sequelae which may cause disability, hinder community reintegration and restrict participation. The inter-relationships among functional ability, community reintegration and participation restriction of community-dwelling, female stroke survivors in Ibadan were assessed in this descriptive study. METHODS: Fifty-two community-dwelling female stroke survivors (mean age

Home and Community Environmental Features, Activity Performance, and Community Participation among Older Adults with Functional Limitations.

This paper describes relationships among home and community environmental features, activity performance in the home, and community participation potential to support aging in place. A subset of data on older adults with functional limitations (N = 122), sixty three (63) with mobility and 59 with other limitations, were utilized in this study from a larger project's subject pool. Results showed significant and positive correlations between environmental barriers, activity dependence and difficulty at home, and less community participation in the mobility limitation group. Evolving motivations for participation in community-based conservation: A relational perspective.

Successful outcomes of community-based conservation, both ecological and social, rely on local actors being motivated to engage at the outset of the programme and to sustain their motivation over time. Using semi-structured interviews, we explore the motivations of 22 community Conservation Officers who have participated in marine turtle conservation in Tanzania for more than two decades. We focus on factors that motivated initial participation, as well as those that contributed to sustaining their participation over the past 20 years. Our study reveals the intricate dynamics of motivational p
