Community-Based Participatory Research: Involving Young People with Lived Experiences of Problematic Sexual Behaviors.

Community advisory boards bridge the gap between researchers and community members to yield the most informed and successful implementation of prevention services. Youth community advisory boards demonstrate the same research-community member benefit but forming them presents unique challenges that often limit their use. In this article, we present lessons learned from a participatory research study in which we engage young people with problematic sexual behaviors (PSB) in an anonymous community advisory board and interviews. After completing a survey, 16 interview participants and five adviso

Black Women's Maternal Health: Insights From Community Based Participatory Research in Newark, New Jersey.

This study on Black women's maternal health engaged a group of six community members in a community based participatory research project in a state with one of the largest racial disparities in maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity in the United States. The community members conducted 31 semi-structured interviews with other Black women who had given birth within the past 3 years to examine their experiences throughout the perinatal and post-partum period. Four main themes emerged: (1) challenges related to the structure of healthcare, including insurance gaps, long wait times, lack

Community-Based Participatory Research: a Family Health History-Based Colorectal Cancer Prevention Program Among Chinese Americans.

Asian Americans are the fastest growing racial/ethnic group in the USA, as this population increased by 72% between 2000 and 2015. Chinese Americans are the largest Asian subgroup, with a high immigrant proportion (63%), a high poverty rate (14%), and a large percentage of low English competency (41%). Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer and cause of cancer death among Chinese Americans. As CRC has a genetic predisposition, family health history (FHH) has been proposed as a preventive tool to stratify CRC risk and guide personalized screening and behavioral mod

Health Status of North Korean Refugees in Toronto: A Community Based Participatory Research Study.

Increasing numbers of North Koreans are fleeing their country due to economic insecurity and political persecution, with over 1000 North Koreans Refugee (NKR) claims in Canada in the past decade. There is little published on their health. Using a Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) methodology, we investigated NKR health status through a retrospective chart review of 1022 patients rostered at a Toronto refugee clinic between December 2011 and June 2014. The health status of 117 NKRs was compared to that of 905 other refugees seen during the same period. There were lower rates of chro

Recovery housing and on-the-ground research priorities: a scoping study through the lens of community based participatory research.

INTRODUCTION: Though communities have featured recovery housing (RH) for several decades, the base of evidence for best practices continues to grow - especially evidence needed by, and known to, those who operate and receive these services. The Initiative for Justice and Emerging Adult Populations (JEAP) engaged with three community boards (CBs) - consisting of young adults with experience in recovery from substance use issues, people who have a history of criminal legal system involvement and recovery, and payers and provider of substance use services and harm reduction - to understand on-the

Screening for Intimate Partner Violence After Traumatic Injury: A Community-Based Participatory Qualitative Research Study.

INTRODUCTION: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is common among injured patients and adversely impacts health. We sought to better understand acceptability and appropriateness of screening for IPV following traumatic injury. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative, community-based participatory research study in partnership with a community-based organization focused on supporting survivors of IPV. We conducted semistructured interviews exploring attitudes and opinions about IPV screening after injury with English- and Spanish-speaking adults who were IPV survivors or who were admitted to a level 1

Increasing Awareness About Tuberculosis Infection Screening in Latino Immigrants: A Community-Based Participatory Research Approach.

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) elimination in the U.S. will require increased screening among at-risk groups. Nontraditional immigration destinations (NTIDs) are those which have historically not been home to large Latino immigrant populations, and which have less culturally relevant services available. Methods: Interviews were performed with Latino immigrants in an NTID to understand health beliefs relevant to TB screening. A community advisory board (CAB) was formed to suggest interventions consistent with health beliefs using the RE-AIM framework for planning. Based on the CAB's suggestions,

Centering communities in policy implementation research: considerations for the integration of community-based participatory research principles into policy-focused implementation science.

BACKGROUND: Community-engaged dissemination and implementation research focuses on the implementation of evidence-based interventions within clinical or community-based settings. It uses community-engaged processes or partnerships. This includes (but is not limited to) community-based participatory research (CBPR). CBPR is an approach that centers actively engaging and collaboratively sharing power with community members, which can increase the value of studies for the communities being served and researchers. Community members include those who are most affected by the research (e.g. patients

Centering Cultural Approaches in Community-Based Participatory Research to Address the Black Maternal Health Crisis.

INTRODUCTION: Black women in Georgia are more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications during the postpartum period than other their non-Black counterparts. Developing effective solutions to address this public health crisis requires strengthened partnerships between researchers and community-based organizations, with the voices of Black women being at the center of the research and innovation. This study examined perspectives of community-advisory board members on a community-based participatory research approach that addresses adverse postpartum health outcomes for Black women livi

A Community-Based Participatory Action Research for Roma Health Justice in a Deprived District in Spain.

Addressing health disparities and promoting health equity for Roma has been a challenge. The Roma are the largest disadvantaged ethnic minority population in Europe and have been the victims of deep social and economic injustices, institutional discrimination, and structural antigypsyism over many centuries. This has resulted in a much worse health status than their non-Roma counterparts. Current strategies based on ameliorative and top-down approaches to service delivery have resulted in paradoxical effects that solidify health disparities, since they do not effectively address the problems o

Using community-based participatory research to contextualize Latino exposure to community violence: A mixed qualitative and spatial analysis approach.

While the relationship between community violence exposure and maladaptive outcomes has been established, the dynamic between violence exposure and resilience factors in youth is not well understood. The current study utilizes a community-based participatory research (CBPR) framework and employs a novel mixed-methods approach integrating quantitative geographic information systems (GIS) data and semi-structured qualitative focus groups to examine violence exposure, family functioning, and neighborhood characteristics, such as community assets, as experienced and reported by Latino adolescents.

Increasing engagement of Spanish-speaking transgender Latinas in research: strategies from ChiCAS, a community-based participatory research intervention trial.

Minoritized racial, ethnic, sexual, and gender communities and populations face profound health disparities and their engagement in research remains low. In a randomized controlled trial, our community-based participatory research partnership tested the efficacy of ChiCAS, an HIV prevention intervention designed to increase pre-exposure prophylaxis use among Spanish-speaking transgender Latinas. Of 161 eligible Spanish-speaking transgender Latinas screened, we enrolled 144, achieving an 89% participation rate, and retained 94% at 6-month follow-up. Given these participation and retention rates

Unintentional Home Injuries: Community-Based Participatory Research among Afghan Immigrants and Refugees in British Columbia, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Unintentional home injuries are a major public health burden in Canada, with racialized and newcomer communities experiencing disproportionate risk. However, limited research has examined the lived experiences and structural determinants of home-injury risks within these populations. Authors in this study examined how recent Afghan immigrants and refugees in Vancouver, British Columbia, experience and navigate home-injury risks within resettlement contexts. METHODS: Using a community-based participatory research approach, we partnered with a Community Advisory Board, who were Afgh

Social support and postpartum adherence to HIV treatment: a community-based participatory research study in Russia.

BACKGROUND: There are over 1 million people living with HIV in Russia, and less than half of them are on antiretroviral treatment (ART). Earlier in the epidemic, Russia was successful in implementing prevention of mother-to-child transmission programmes; however, there is a gap in knowledge about postpartum adherence to ART among women living with HIV (WLHIV). The objective of our research study was to identify which factors are associated with postpartum engagement in HIV care and treatment in Russia. METHODS: We conducted a community-based participatory research study in five Russian cities

Using Community-Based Participatory Research to Design a Patient and Practitioner-Centered Group Prenatal Care Model.

In response to disproportionately high rates of infant mortality and preterm birth among women of color and women in poverty in Fresno County, California, community and academic partners coordinated a community-based participatory research (CBPR) project with local residents. Social isolation and stress, inaccessible prenatal care, and dissatisfaction with care experiences were identified as leading predictors of poor birth outcomes. The PRECEDE-PROCEED framework was used to lead the CBPR effort that resulted in the development of a model of group prenatal care, named Glow! Group Prenatal Care

Striving for Structure and Stability in Cincinnati's Family Homeless Shelters: A Community-Based Participatory Research Approach.

Experiencing homelessness negatively impacts child health, development, and emotional-behavioral functioning, but there is limited knowledge regarding specific service priorities, as articulated by families themselves, to prevent or address these adverse sequelae. Thus, to elicit the service needs perspective of families in shelter and to translate these findings into real-world action, we undertook a community-based participatory research effort using Group-Level Assessment, a focus group methodology. An action-based participatory needs assessment called a Group-Level Assessment (GLA) was con
