It is increasingly clear that coexistent disease plays a pivotal role in RA outcome and that efforts aimed at specifically addressing these comorbidities need to be aggressively sought, investigated, and implemented once proven effective. RA-associated costs are currently increasing at twice the rate of the medical care index. Comorbidity in the setting of RA independently predicts disease-associated disability (a major cost component) and mortality, underscoring the need for a more comprehensive approach to RA, one that adequately addresses disease-specific comorbidities. At present, many pri

A bibliographic review of psychiatric comorbidity in cocaine users was done in last ten years (Medline, IME, HealthSTAR, Cinahl). It was valued the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in cocaine users and that of consume of this substance in-patients with psychiatric disorders. Their relationship, influence over the evolution and consequences on the treatment were studied as well. Epidemiologic studies showed an increase of affective disorders, anxiety disorders and personality disorders in cocaine users and an increase of consume of this substance in those patients who are presented psychosis

Panic disorder is a common condition. Epidemiological studies throughout the world consistently indicate that the lifetime prevalence of panic disorder (with or without agoraphobia) is between 1.5% and 3.5%. Panic disorder shows substantial comorbidity with other forms of mental illness. Major depressive disorder occurs in 50 to 65% of individuals with panic disorder and there is considerable cross-sectional and longitudinal comorbidity with recurrent brief depression and dysthymia. Phobic anxiety disorders, most notably social phobia and generalised anxiety disorder, commonly occur with panic

Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is the commonest inflammatory rheumatic disease affecting older people. The current mainstay of treatment is long-term oral glucocorticoid therapy. Management of these patients in clinical practice is often complicated by the presence of comorbidity. Comorbidity might be due to shared risk factors such as age, sex, or genetic background; to the presence of the disease itself; or to adverse effects of glucocorticoid therapy. Cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis/fracture, metabolic and ocular comorbidity are of particular interest to clinicians because of their relat

In this report, a possible association between Dupuytren's disease (DD) and other health problems was investigated. The health problems included in this study are : cardiac ischemia, hypertension, hyper-lipidemia, diabetes mellitus, epilepsy, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, malignancy, asthma and COPD. The data of 725 patients with DD were collected from -Intego, a database including all morbidity presented to the General Practitioners (GPs) in Flanders. The control group of 2900 age and sex matched non-DD patients was selected from the same database. A possible influence of severity of DD was eva

Pregnancy is the result of a series of highly complex processes, which can be deranged by multiple disturbances on many different levels. Physicians are increasingly dealing with couples suffering from infertility. This rise in case numbers is mainly due to the fact that couples are more and more delaying childbearing until a later phase of their reproductive life, when their social and professional careers are established. The increasing mean age at the first birth has a negative impact on fertility by deteriorating quality and reducing the quantity of oocytes. With increasing age systemic di

Pulmonary comorbidities can increase disease severity and health care costs associated with asthma management. Vocal cord dysfunction/inducible laryngeal obstruction is a common comorbidity that results from intermittent laryngeal obstruction. Patients describe distinct episodes of dyspnea that do not respond to bronchodilators. Inspiratory stridor is common. The gold standard diagnostic testing strategy is continuous laryngoscopy performed during exercise or irritant challenges. Dysfunctional breathing (DB) is an overarching term that describes conditions with a chronic change in the pattern

Comorbidity network analysis (CNA) is a technique in which mathematical graphs encode correlations (edges) among diseases (nodes) inferred from the disease co-occurrence data of a patient group. The present study applied this network-based approach to identifying comorbidity patterns in older patients undergoing hip fracture surgery. This was a retrospective observational cohort study using electronic health records (EHR). EHR data were extracted from the one University Health System in the southeast United States. The cohort included patients aged 65 and above who had a first-time low-energy

INTRODUCTION: Cancer survival is related not only to primary malignancy but also to concomitant nonmalignant diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic capacity of four comorbidity indices [the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), the Elixhauser method, the National Institute on Aging (NIA) and National Cancer Institute (NCI) comorbidity index, and the Adult Comorbidity Evaluation-27 (ACE-27)] for both cancer-related and all-cause mortality among colorectal cancer patients. A modified version of the CCI adapted for colorectal cancer patients was also built.

The current and lifetime comorbidity of depressive (i.e., major depressive disorder and dysthymia) with other common mental disorders was examined in community samples of older adolescents (n = 1,710) and adults (n = 2,060). Current and lifetime histories of depression in the adolescents were highly comorbid with several other mental disorders. The adults had a lower but statistically significant degree of comorbidity, primarily with substance use disorder. Depression in both groups was more likely to occur after the other disorder rather than to precede it. Comorbidity did not affect the dura

Psychiatric comorbidity is present in more than 70% of people with an Eating Disorders (ED), before or during the acute state of illness or in the long-term course. These comorbidities include personality disorders (>53%), anxiety disorders (>50%), mood disorders (>40%) and substance abuse (>10%). This work aims to analyse the different treatments available for patients affected by eating disorders and other psychiatric comorbidity.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of mortality worldwide. One reason behind this lethality lies in the fact that often cardiovascular illnesses develop into systemic failure due to the multiple connections to organismal metabolism. This in turn is associated with co-morbidities and multimorbidity. The prevalence of coexisting diseases and the relationship between the molecular origins adds to the complexity of the management of cardiovascular diseases and thus requires a profound knowledge of the genetic interaction of diseases. Objective: In order to develop a deeper

Patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can be affected by other unrelated diseases. These are called comorbid conditions, and can include any secondary health problem that affects a person suffering from a primary or main disease, and which is neither linked physiopathologically to the primary condition, nor is it due to the treatments used for the primary condition or to its long-term anatomical or physiological consequences. Different comorbid conditions, as well as their influence on IBD, are discussed.

Comorbid disorders such as anxiety disorders, ADHD and substance-related disorders are common in bipolar patients. Comorbidity impairs the functional capacity, quality of life and prognosis in these patients. Psychiatric drug treatments of comorbid disorders are challenging as they may induce rapid-cycling and mania, thus worsening the outcome. Generally, the therapeutic requirements of the most severe disorders, i.e. bipolar disorder, are prioritized. In some cases the drug treatments of comorbid disorders are justified only after optimizing the therapy of bipolar disorder.

Vertigo is one of the most common symptom and complaint in the clinical practice. The differential diagnosis can only be attained by a careful interdisciplinary way of thinking and activity, given the fact that the vestibular, neurological and psychiatric disorders--considered as pathogenic factors--are being present simultaneously in triggering the symptoms, and there can be overlaps between the certain pathological processes. The author deals with the co-morbidity of the vertigo and the psychiatric symptoms--anxiety, panic-disorder--, pointing out the common neurobiological and neurophysiolo

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most frequent endocrinological disorder among women in the reproductive age. It is by its very nature a heterogeneous juxtaposition of clinical and biochemical features. In women with PCOS, the most common clinical manifestations - obesity, hirsutism and oligomenorrhoea - are associated with insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia, hypertension, vascular dysfunction involving chronic inflammation and also reduced cardiopulmonary function. The focus of this overview is therefore on PCOS comorbidity with the metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular

The growing literature shows the pervasiveness and importance of comorbidity in youth with bipolar disorder (BPD). For instance, up to 90% of youth with BPD have been described to manifest comorbidity with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder. Multiple anxiety, substance use, and disruptive behavior disorders are the other most commonly reported comorbidities with BPD. Moreover, important recent data highlight the importance of obsessive-compulsive and pervasive developmental illness in the context of BPD. Data suggest that not only special developmental relationships are operant in the co
