Evidence for circulation of the rift valley fever virus among livestock in the union of Comoros.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an arthropod-borne phlebovirus reported to be circulating in most parts of Africa. Since 2009, RVFV has been suspected of continuously circulating in the Union of Comoros. To estimate the incidence of RVFV antibody acquisition in the Comorian ruminant population, 191 young goats and cattle were selected in six distinct zones and sampled periodically from April 2010 to August 2011. We found an estimated incidence of RVFV antibody acquisition of 17.5% (95% confidence interval (CI): [8.9-26.1]) with a significant difference between islands (8.2% in Grande Comore,

The flying fox Pteropus seychellensis of Mayotte (Comoros): method of capture and blood sampling.

Pteropus seychellensis comorensis is the only Pteropodidae bat species on the island of Mayotte (Comoros Archipelago), and most aspects of its biology are unknown. In order to catch this large bat, we used a simple and low-cost method, consisting of raised mist nets that were set close to foraging sites. Major factors driving catch success were high food availability, good positioning of mist nets, and careful observation of movement patterns to identify foraging sites where the chances of capture are high. Blood was collected from the alar and humeral veins, which appear to be more practical

Investigating drug resistance of Mycobacterium leprae in the Comoros: an observational deep-sequencing study.

BACKGROUND: Despite strong leprosy control measures, including effective treatment, leprosy persists in the Comoros. As of May, 2022, no resistance to anti-leprosy drugs had been reported, but there are no nationally representative data. Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) with rifampicin is offered to contacts of patients with leprosy. We aimed to conduct a countrywide drug resistance survey and investigate whether PEP led to the emergence of drug resistance in patients with leprosy. METHODS: In this observational, deep-sequencing analysis we assessed Mycobacterium leprae genomes from skin biops

Clustering of leprosy beyond the household level in a highly endemic setting on the Comoros, an observational study.

BACKGROUND: The island of Anjouan (Comoros) is highly endemic for leprosy with an annual incidence of 5-10/10,000. In May/June, 2015 single-dose Rifampicin post-exposure prophylaxis (SDR-PEP) was administered to 269 close contacts of 70 leprosy-patients in four villages as a pilot programmatic intervention. Two years later we revisited the villages for follow-up investigations. The main aim of our study was to quantify spatial associations between reported leprosy cases before and after PEP implementation. A secondary aim was to assess the effect of this single round of SDR-PEP at the individu

Human Salmonella and Shigella infections in Moroni, the capital of Great Comoro Island (1987-1988).

Over a period of two years 98 cultures of Salmonella and 17 cultures of Shigella were isolated at the El Maarouf Hospital, Moroni, capital of the Comoros. Almost half of the isolates were from children under 5 years. Salmonella belonged to a limited range of serotypes, S. typhi dominating in adults and S. enteritidis in children, often with bacteraemia. Antibiotic resistance was virtually absent in Salmonella and without clinical significance in Shigella. The high isolation rate of S. enteritidis and the rarity of antibiotic resistance are commented.

Serological Evidence of Contrasted Exposure to Arboviral Infections between Islands of the Union of Comoros (Indian Ocean).

A cross sectional serological survey of arboviral infections in humans was conducted on the three islands of the Union of Comoros, Indian Ocean, in order to test a previously suggested contrasted exposure of the three neighboring islands to arthropod-borne epidemics. Four hundred human sera were collected on Ngazidja (Grande Comore), Mwali (Mohéli) and Ndzouani (Anjouan), and were tested by ELISA for IgM and/or IgG antibodies to Dengue (DENV), Chikungunya (CHIKV), Rift Valley fever (RVFV), West Nile (WNV), Tick borne encephalitis (TBEV) and Yellow fever (YFV) viruses and for neutralizing antib

Case Report: Six New Cases of Melioidosis in the Indian Ocean Region: Comoros, Madagascar, Reunion Island.

Melioidosis is an emerging disease caused by the environmental Gram-negative bacillus Burkholderia pseudomallei. Melioidosis has been reported to be endemic mainly in northern Australia and Southeast Asia. Here, we report the first two cases of melioidosis on the Comorian island of Mayotte. We also describe four cases that occurred over a short period of time in patients who had traveled between Mayotte, Madagascar, and Reunion Island.

Burden of malaria in the Comoros, 1990-2021: findings from the global burden of disease study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a major public health issue in the Comoros. Analyzing the malaria burden will aid in designing prevention, control, and eradication strategies based on scientific evidence. METHODS: We retrieved data from the 2021 Global Burden of Disease (GBD) database to assess the malaria burden in the Comoros in 2021, stratified by sex and age. The indicators used to measure this burden included the absolute numbers and rates of incidence, prevalence, and mortality, as well as disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), years of life lost (YLLs), and years lived with disability (YLDs).

Malaria Control by Mass Drug Administration With Artemisinin Plus Piperaquine on Grande Comore Island, Union of Comoros.

BACKGROUND: Mass drug administration (MDA) is a powerful tool for malaria control, but the medicines to use, dosing, number of rounds, and potential selection of drug resistance remain open questions. METHODS: Two monthly rounds of artemisinin-piperaquine (AP), each comprising 2 daily doses, were administered across the 7 districts of Grande Comore Island. In 3 districts, low-dose primaquine (PMQLD) was also given on the first day of each monthly round. Plasmodium falciparum malaria rates, mortality, parasitemias, adverse events, and genetic markers of potential drug resistance were evaluated

Exploration of tongue dorsum sampling to support clinical diagnosis of leprosy patients in the Comoros: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The accuracy of the WHO-endorsed clinical leprosy diagnosis depends on the expertise of health care workers. For molecular confirmation of clinically diagnosed patients, skin biopsies have the highest sensitivity to detect Mycobacterium leprae. As less invasive tongue swabs showed promising results for qPCR-based M. tuberculosis detection, this study investigated the presence of M. leprae on the tongue dorsum of clinically diagnosed leprosy patients. METHODS AND FINDINGS: During the activities of the (BE-)PEOPLE study, 499 clinically diagnosed, consenting patients from the Comoros

RDTs as a source of DNA to study Plasmodium falciparum drug resistance in isolates from Senegal and the Comoros Islands.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization has recommended rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for use in the diagnosis of suspected malaria cases. In addition to providing quick and accurate detection of Plasmodium parasite proteins in the blood, these tests can be used as sources of DNA for further genetic studies. As sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine is used currently for intermittent presumptive treatment of pregnant women in both Senegal and in the Comoros Islands, resistance mutations in the dhfr and dhps genes were investigated using DNA extracted from RDTs. METHODS: The proximal portion of the nitro

Short report: Q fever and Plasmodium falciparum malaria co-infection in a patient returning from the Comoros archipelago.

Although Plasmodium falciparum malaria and Q fever are both prevalent in Africa, there have been no reports of co-infection to date. We report a case who returned from the Comoros archipelago diagnosed by serologic analysis as well as detection of Coxiella burnetii DNA in acute-phase serum. Thus, Q fever may be associated with malaria infection in travelers returning from disease-endemic countries. This diagnosis should be considered when the response to malaria treatment is incomplete.

Genetic diversity on the Comoros Islands shows early seafaring as major determinant of human biocultural evolution in the Western Indian Ocean.

The Comoros Islands are situated off the coast of East Africa, at the northern entrance of the channel of Mozambique. Contemporary Comoros society displays linguistic, cultural and religious features that are indicators of interactions between African, Middle Eastern and Southeast Asian (SEA) populations. Influences came from the north, brought by the Arab and Persian traders whose maritime routes extended to Madagascar by 700-900 AD. Influences also came from the Far East, with the long-distance colonisation by Austronesian seafarers that reached Madagascar 1500 years ago. Indeed, strong gene
