Compassion fatigue and COVID-19: A global view from nurses.

BACKGROUND: Due to the rapid spread of COVID-19 variants, the number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 may create psychological burdens on nurses. Nurses with high levels of compassion fatigue (CF) are more likely to make work errors, deliver poor-quality care, and have greater intent to leave their position. OBJECTIVES: This study utilized the social-ecological model to examine factors associated with nurses' CF and compassion satisfaction (CS) during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: Data were collected from the United States, Japan, and South Korea from July to December 2020. The Professi

Gender as a sensor of nurses' depression, compassion fatigue and resilience.

BACKGROUND: Gender is a sensor in certain professional psychological risks. One of those professions is nursing; it has a humanistic nature that is double-loaded with triggers of negative psychological sequelae such as depression and compassion fatigue. To help male and female nurses cope successfully with variable trauma, resilience pathways are activated, yet using different mechanisms. The purpose of this study was to assess the differences in depression, compassion fatigue, and resilience based on gender and the variables of education, marital status, and income. METHODS: 631 hospital-bas

Trauma surgeons experience compassion fatigue: A major metropolitan area survey.

INTRODUCTION: Compassion fatigue (CF), the physical, emotional, and psychological impact of helping others, is composed of three domains: compassion satisfaction (CS), secondary traumatic stress (STS), and burnout (BO). Trauma surgeons (TSs) experience work-related stress resulting in high rates of CF, which can manifest as physical and psychological disorders. We hypothesized that TSs experience CF and there are potentially modifiable systemic factors to mitigate its symptoms. METHODS: All TSs in a major metropolitan area were eligible. Personal and professional demographic information was o

Compassion Fatigue Among Practicing and Future Psychiatrists: A National Perspective.

Compassion fatigue is a set of emotions and behaviors that occur as a result of assisting a person who is suffering. Compassion fatigue, burnout, and low compassion satisfaction are all hazards that professional caregivers encounter. However, in comparison to non-medical workers, psychiatrists were found to have higher levels of compassion fatigue. We conducted a cross-sectional study that targeted all psychiatrists and psychiatric trainees enlisted in Saudi Arabia at the only registering body, the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS). The SCFHS approved and sent an online survey co

Concept analysis: compassion fatigue and effects upon critical care nurses.

Walker and Avant's method of concept analysis was used to delve into the initial understanding of compassion fatigue, a relatively new concept being explored with critical care nurses and other health care professionals. The term was originally used in 1992 involving research exploring burnout experienced by critical care nurses when a trend emerged where nurses appeared to have lost their "ability to nurture." The term has since been used synonymously with secondary traumatic stress disorder. Two important goals exist for this article: First, theoretically to conduct a concept analysis of com

Compassion fatigue and satisfaction in post-earthquake psychosocial support providers: the roles of self-compassion, resilience, and mindfulness.

Earthquakes expose not only survivors but also support providers to significant psychological strain. Professionals delivering prolonged psychosocial support in post-disaster contexts may experience compassion fatigue, yet protective factors that enhance compassion satisfaction or reduce fatigue remain insufficiently examined. This study investigated the relationships among psychological resilience, mindfulness, compassion satisfaction, and compassion fatigue, and examined the mediating role of self-compassion in these associations. Participants were 125 psychosocial support providers (63 fema

Managing Compassion Fatigue in Intensive Care Unit Nurses: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Compassion fatigue is the accumulation of negative feelings from long-term exposure to human suffering, which leads to emotional, physical, and spiritual exhaustion. Intensive care unit nurses are especially prone to this due to the unique stressors of their work environment, such as high patient mortality and caring for medically unstable patients. There is currently a gap in literature appraising the effectiveness of interventions that help manage compassion fatigue in intensive care unit nurses. OBJECTIVES: This systematic review evaluates the efficacy of compassion fatigue int

Compassion fatigue and the effectiveness of support structures for diagnostic radiographers in oncology.

INTRODUCTION: Diagnostic radiographers working in oncology will have frequent contact with the same patients over a prolonged period. This can be mentally exhausting for the radiographer. Compassion fatigue (CF) occurs after repeated exposure to stressful situations and it can become overwhelming, leading to irritability and decreased empathy. CF has been known to affect many healthcare professions, however few studies have examined diagnostic radiographers, nor if the current support systems are suitable. METHODS: An exploratory study was conducted as part of a local quality improvement proj

Establishment and validation of a prediction model for compassion fatigue in nursing students.

BACKGROUND: Compassion fatigue is a common issue nursing students face during clinical internships. Prolonged exposure to patients' suffering and trauma can lead to emotional exhaustion and psychological stress. Compared to formal healthcare workers, nursing students have less professional experience and weaker emotional regulation abilities, making them more vulnerable to secondary trauma and other negative emotions, which exacerbates compassion fatigue. Early identification and intervention in compassion fatigue are crucial for improving the mental health of nursing students and the quality

Burnout, Compassion Fatigue, and the Long Haul of Caring for Long COVID.

The current landscape of clinician burnout is prompting the need for our health care system to revise its approach toward complex conditions such as long coronavirus disease (COVID), myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), and other postinfectious fatiguing illnesses (PIFIs). We discuss our efforts here at Family Health Center of San Diego (FHCSD) to help share insight and glean perspective from clinicians who have participated in our Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-funded 3-year continuing professional development initiative. The Long COVID and Fatiguing
