The introduction of Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) in India emphasizes outcome-oriented training and provides a framework for implementing integrated teaching strategies. Traditional discipline-based medical education often limits the ability of learners to integrate knowledge across domains required to manage such complex comorbidities. Evidence suggests that integrated teaching approaches improve knowledge acquisition, clinical reasoning, and learner engagement. The coexistence of tuberculosis (TB) and diabetes mellitus (DM) represents a significant and evolving public health chal

BACKGROUND: Competency-Based Health Professions Education (CBHPE) is increasingly implemented; however, CBHPE outcomes research remains difficult to interpret and synthesize when studies incompletely report the CBHPE model and other elements.
OBJECTIVE: To develop structured reporting guidelines for CBHPE outcomes studies to improve transparency, interpretability, and transferability across educational contexts and professions.
METHODS: A multi-phase, iterative consensus-development process was used to create a CBHPE outcomes reporting checklist aligned with a CBHPE Outcomes Theory of Change

BACKGROUND: Nurse educators have a professional and ethical responsibility to revise curricula to be inclusive and competency-based.
PROBLEM: Inclusive education benefits all students, including neurodivergent and disabled learners, and reduces reliance on individually awarded accommodations. Many nurse educators lack skills for inclusive instruction.
APPROACH: This article presents a practical framework that integrates Transparency in Learning and Teaching, Universal Design for Learning, and Competency-Based Education. Grounded in the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics, this approac

BACKGROUND: The unmet burden of surgical disease represents a major global health concern, and a lack of trained providers is a critical component of the inadequacy of surgical care worldwide. Competency-based training has been advanced in high-income countries, improving technical skills and decreasing training time, but it is poorly understood how this model might be applied to low- and middle-income countries. We describe the development of a competency-based program to accelerate specialty training of in-country providers in cleft surgery techniques.
METHODS: The program was designed and

INTRODUCTION: Graduate medical education (GME) selection processes may pose significant barriers to implementing competency-based health professions education (CBHPE). Current selection metrics are largely nonpredictive of future success, and the removal of clerkship grades has given rise to a shadow economy of effort focused on publications, research hours, and other activities that detract from clinical training. This misalignment between selection practices and CBHPE principles constitutes a wicked problem that requires innovative approaches to develop new solutions.
METHODS: We conducted

Obesity is a leading public health concern in the United States, yet medical education continues to inadequately prepare future providers to manage it as a complex, chronic disease. Compounding this issue is the pervasive presence of weight bias in healthcare, which contributes to poorer patient outcomes, diminished quality of care, and reduced patient engagement. Despite growing awareness, obesity and weight bias education remain inconsistently integrated into medical curricula, often lacking structured, longitudinal, and competency-based approaches. While frameworks such as those developed b

INTRODUCTION: Personalization is increasingly emphasized in postgraduate medical education. While competency-based medical education (CBME) is theoretically positioned to support personalization, practical challenges such as fixed learning outcomes, workplace constraints, time-fixed rotations, and assessment requirements, often limit its realization. This case study aimed to explore how residents experience and make use of individualized development trajectories within a program that combined fixed outcomes with flexible program components.
METHOD: We conducted a case study using semi-structu

Assessment in health professions education has evolved dramatically in the past hundred years. The way in which we conceptualize validity has also required evolution, particularly in the era of competency-based health professions education (CBHPE). The CBHPE approach compels us to reexamine a historical focus on objectivity, individual assessments, and standards of achievement alone. In this manuscript, the authors explore the implications CBHPE places on validity, highlighting three tension points: the paradigm of assessment, levels of validation, and the reference for competence. The authors

The rise of chemsex and party-and-play (PnP) among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) presents complex challenges for nurse practitioner (NP) delivered care. Research consistently demonstrates that PnP participation contributes to increased sexually transmitted infection (STI) and HIV risk, stimulant and polysubstance dependence, trauma-associated symptoms, and mental health concerns. Despite this evidence, PnP remains largely absent within NP education in the United States. Studies across behavioral health, sexual health, addiction science, and LGBTQ+ health report eleva

Introduction Medical education is shifting toward experiential, competency-based approaches that emphasize clinical reasoning and practical skills. Simulation-based learning (SBL) supports this shift by offering a safe, structured setting where students enhance cognitive and psychomotor abilities through active practice, timely feedback, and reflection. This fosters deeper engagement with clinical content and builds confidence before patient encounters. Global research indicates that SBL enhances various competencies, but Indian studies are limited. Factors like insufficient early clinical exp

Competency-Based Health Professions Education (CBHPE) has transformed health professions training by emphasizing demonstrated competence over time-based progression. Yet the clinical learning environment (CLE), the social, cultural, and organizational ecosystem in which learning occurs, has not evolved in parallel. Persistent hierarchies, workload pressures, and inadequate faculty development limit CBHPE's full potential. Thus, the authors sought to identify priorities for CLE reform. A structured consensus process was conducted at the International Competency-Based Education Collaborators Sum

Competency-based health professions education (CBHPE) is in various stages of implementation around the globe. While program evaluation is essential to drive improvement, adaptation, and the evolution of CBHPE, it may be intimidating for educators given the breadth of program evaluation methods and wide variation globally in local resources and expertise. In this manuscript, the authors summarize key examples of program evaluations highlighting an array of CBHPE implementations, evaluation methods, and settings. The examples are organized by five evaluation focus areas: readiness to implement,

BACKGROUND/PROBLEM: Competency-Based Health Professions Education (CBHPE) aims to improve workforce readiness, patient safety, and equity, but achieving these outcomes requires sustained investment. The "No Free Lunch" (NFL) rule underscores that value cannot be realized without visible costs, which can be financial, cultural, temporal, and structural. Although costs are ideally shared across the health professions education and health care ecosystem, interest holders often invest unevenly despite broad benefits. As a result, many programs and institutions struggle to implement and sustain CBH

Organisational considerations are essential when proposing the implementation of an educational innovation like programmatic assessment. Currently, most recommendations by regulatory bodies to adopt curriculum reforms do not take into consideration the characteristics and context of low-income countries. This paper explores the contexts of four nursing education institutions in a low-income country that recently adopted the programmatic assessment approach in their programmes. The study was underpinned by the environment phase of the Design Science Research framework and used semi-structured i

With the widespread application of ultrasound in disease screening, clinical diagnosis, and efficacy monitoring, the traditional model in which ultrasound examinations and diagnoses are independently performed by ultrasound physicians has increasingly struggled to meet the growing clinical demands. The gradual introduction and standardized development of the professional role of ultrasound technicians have imposed new training requirements on graduate education in medical imaging technology. Against this background, how to effectively cultivate students' clinical thinking and technical operati

In the late 1990s, US dental education embraced competency-based education (CBE), replacing time- and procedure-based requirements with an outcomes-oriented approach centered on demonstrated abilities and readiness for independent practice. Nearly three decades later, entrustable professional activities (EPAs) is emerging as an assessment framework. Do EPAs represent a new paradigm for dentistry, or are they an extension of assessment principles already embedded in competency-based dental education (CBDE)? This paper examines the similarities and differences between CBDE and entrustable profes

Competency-based education is widely endorsed in health professions education (CBHPE) as an outcomes-focused approach to ensuring that all graduates demonstrate the competencies needed to improve patient and population health. Despite adoption of outcomes frameworks, accreditation requirements, and CBHPE tactics, interventions remain siloed within programs and training levels rather than spanning the education to practice continuum. Consequently, learners and teachers experience fragmented educational journeys that can fall short of addressing each learner's needs for continuous learning and g
