Antibiotics are widely used in animals for disease treatment and prevention. After use, these antibiotics end up in manure. Here we investigated the fate of veterinary antibiotics in animal manure during composting and their residues in manure-applied soils. The results showed that 64.7% of the detected veterinary antibiotics were removed after composting for 171 days, which mainly occurred at the thermophilic phase in the second week, followed by a long stable stage with limited variations. The removal rates for lincomycin, trimethoprim and the macrolides during the composting were >89.7%, wh

The dry-composting toilet, which uses neither water nor sewage infrastructure, is a practical solution in areas with inadequate sewage disposal and where water is limited. These systems are becoming increasingly popular and are promoted to sanitize human excreta and to recycle them into fertilizer for nonedible plants, yet there are few data on the safety of this technology. This study analyzed fecal coliform reduction in approximately 90 prefabricated, dry-composting toilets (Sistema Integral de Reciclamiento de Desechos Orgánicos [SIRDOs]) that were installed on the U.S.-Mexico border in Ciu

Changes in public opinion and legislation have led to the general recognition that solid waste treatment practices must be changed. Solid-waste disposal by landfill is becoming increasingly expensive and regulated and no longer represents a long-term option in view of limited land space and environmental problems. Yard waste, a significant component of municipal solid waste, has previously not been separated from the municipal solid-waste stream. The treatment of municipal solid waste including yard waste must urgently be addressed because disposal via landfill will be prohibited by legislatio

Human disease caused by Legionella species is dominated by Legionella pneumophila, the main causative agent in cases of Legionnaires' disease. However, other species are known to cause infection, for example, Legionella longbeachae causes an equivalent number of cases of disease as L. pneumophila in Australia and New Zealand. Infection with L. longbeachae is commonly associated with exposure to composts and potting soils, and cases of infection with this organism have been increasing in Europe over the past ten years. The increase in incidence may be linked to factors such as increased awarene

Mature compost can reduce gaseous emissions in composting, but its regulation mechanisms via biotic and abiotic functions are largely unknown. This study used fresh and inactivated mature compost as additives in kitchen waste composting to unveil the relevant mechanisms using metagenomic analysis. Results showed that mature compost reduce gaseous emission by improving physiochemical properties and inoculating functional microbes. The abiotic function of mature compost alleviated methane and nitrous oxide emission by 20 % via enhancing air diffusion and pH to limit the activity of mcr, mtr, nor

This study aimed to investigate the impact of incorporating mature compost on the harmlessness and maturity level of composting from swine manure and carcasses from industrialized pig farms in continuously running large-scale silo reactor systems. The potential human or animal bacterial pathogens and core bacterial community in composting were analyzed by high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons. The results showed that the addition of mature compost in the GD group significantly increased the temperature of all depths, the accumulated temperature of compost, and the germination i

Recently, composting cultivation method is widely used in oyster mushroom production. In this study, we focused on the effects of composting processes on nutritional qualities and antioxidant activity of Pleurotus floridanus mushroom fruiting bodies. Three treatments of different composting time (2, 4, and 5 days) were performed with an atmospheric sterilization treatment as the control. The results showed that the pH value, total carbon content, and total nitrogen content of substrate were critical parameters which would significantly affect mushroom qualities and bioactivities. Land application of MSW compost promotes the soil fertility and productivity, but there is concern about its chemical and microbial quality. Although, current microbial indicators of MSW compost are generally considered to be protective of human health, the use of these indicators doesn't adequately represent the presence of pathogens that might be more resistant to inactivation during composting process. This work aims evaluation of the microbial characteristics of MSW compost and estimation of the health risks associated with exposure to pathogens of potential concern in MSW compost. Althoug

Soil degradation and water scarcity affect crop productivity and ecosystem resilience. Biotechnological strategies based on organic waste valorisation offer promising tools for restoring soil fertility and increasing stress tolerance. This study evaluated the effectiveness of four composts produced under different decentralized composting schemes: community (CA), decentralized urban (SO), small-scale agrocomposting from poultry manure (UP), and medium-scale agrocomposting from olive pomace and pig manure (TO), in improving a degraded soil and enhancing rosemary tolerance to drought. Soil micro

Improper treatment of penicillin fermentation fungi residue (PFFR), one of the by-products of penicillin production process, may result in environmental pollution due to the high concentration of penicillin. Aerobic co-composting of PFFR with pig manure was determined to degrade penicillin in PFFR. Results showed that co-composting of PFFR with pig manure can significantly reduce the concentration of penicillin in PFFR, make the PFFR-compost safer as organic fertilizer for soil application. More than 99% of penicillin in PFFR were removed after 7-day composting. PFFR did not affect the compost

Composting is a widely used method for managing and valorizing biowaste. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is commonly applied to evaluate its environmental impacts. Current methods used to model life cycle inventories often oversimplify the complex physical, chemical, and biological processes involved. This study introduces the Parametrized Composting Tool for Environmental Assessment (PaCTEA), developed to better capture the influence of biowaste composition variability and operational parameters on composting environmental impacts. PaCTEA integrates a composting model that predicts direct emissio

INTRODUCTION: Long-term compost application is an important strategy for improving soil fertility and regulating soil microbial communities, but the comparative effects of traditional compost and bio-compost on microbial life-history strategies remain unclear, which is a valuable framework for linking community shifts to soil carbon and nutrient cycling.
METHODS: In this study, a long-term (30-year) field experiment established in 1993 under a winter wheat-summer maize cropping system was used to evaluate the effects of high-rate bio-compost, high-rate traditional compost, low-rate bio-compos

Amending biochar or MnO2 is a common strategy to regulate humification during manure composting. However, how these additives affect the formation, spectrum characteristics (UV-vis, FTIR, EEM) of humic substances (HSs) in silkworm-excrement (SE) compost and their electron transfer capacities (ETC) remains unclear. Thus, the SE composting pilot separately added with 10% corncob biochar (CB) (w/w) and 0.5% MnO2 (w/w) was run to investigate the effects. The results revealed that adding 10% CB slightly affected the HA/FA (humic acids/fulvic acids) ratios, UV-vis and FTIR spectra of the final SE-co

Composting is a promising technology for treating organic solid waste. However, greenhouse gases (methane and nitrous oxide) and odor emissions (ammonia, hydrogen sulfide, etc.) during composting are practically unavoidable, leading to severe environmental problems and poor final compost products. The optimization of composting conditions and the application of additives have been considered to mitigate these problems, but a comprehensive analysis of the influence of these methods on gaseous emissions during composting is lacking. Thus, this review summarizes the influence of composting condit

Particle size is a significant factor in determining the dispersal and inhalation risk from bioaerosols. Green-waste composting is a significant source of bioaerosols (including pathogens), but little is known about the distribution of specific taxa across size fractions. To characterise size fractionated bioaerosol emissions from a compost facility, we used a Spectral Intensity Bioaerosol Sensor (SIBS) to quantify total bioaerosols and qPCR and metabarcoding to quantify microbial bioaerosols. Overall, sub-micron bioaerosols predominated, but molecular analysis showed that most (>75%) of the a

To investigate morphine degradation and optimize turning frequency in opium poppy processing waste composting, a pilot scale windrow composting trial was run for 55 days. Four treatments were designed as without turning (A1), every 5 days turning (A2), every 10 days turning (A3) and every 15 days turning (A4). During composting, a range of physicochemical parameters including the residual morphine degradation, temperature, pH, and the contents of total C, total N, total P and total K were investigated. For all treatments, the residual morphine content decreased below the detection limit and re

TNT was mutagenic for Salmonella typhimurium without the need of a rat liver metabolic activation system (S9). The mutagenic potency of TNT decreased in proportion to the number of nitro groups that were reduced to the amino form. The presence of a nitro group on the 4 position of the diamino congener is necessary for mutagenicity. Among the active congeners, mutagenicity was generally greater for TA100 than TA98, except that for the 4-amino congener the reverse was true. In cases when S9 was included in the assay, there was always a decrease in the number of mutants induced as compared with t

Municipal sewage sludge, a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), is usually composted as fertilizer for agricultural application especially in arid and semi-arid areas. The evolution patterns of intracellular ARGs (iARGs) and extracellular ARGs (eARGs) during composting and their responses to soil salinization after long-term compost application kept unclear previously, which were systematically studied in the current study. The variation and dissemination risk of eARGs and iARGs with the salinization of farmland soils was also evaluated. Extra/intra-cellular ARGs relative abundance
