Death from Barotrauma Due to Compressed Air: A Medico-legal Analysis.

Lesions of the digestive tract due to barotrauma resulting from compressed air application are not common, are rarely lethal, and largely affect the sigmoid and descending colon. Moreover, their pathogenic mechanism is a topic of discussion because these lesions have multiple characteristics. Here, the authors describe an autoptic case of death from lesions of the ascending and transverse segments, with perforations and bleeding suffusions as well as ischemic areas covered the colonic wall that was extremely thinned, congested, and hemorrhagic, with considerable flattening leading to disappear

Dysbaric osteonecrosis in a compressed air tunnelling project in Hong Kong.

In the largest compressed air tunnelling project using the Blackpool Decompression Tables in Hong Kong, 912 men had radiological examination of major joints and 12 definite and 30 suspected cases of dysbaric osteonecrosis were detected by the compressed air physician. Distribution of the lesions was symmetrical and 43.1 per cent were juxta-articular. All the cases were asymptomatic. The infrequent occurrence of osteonecrosis in Hong Kong in general and in this project in particular suggests that the Blackpool Tables were relatively effective in preventing the disease. Definite and suspected ca

Compressed Air Working in Chennai During Metro Tunnel Construction: Occupational Health Problems.

Chennai metropolis has been growing rapidly. Need was felt of a metro rail system. Two corridors were planned. Corridor 1, of 23 km starting from Washermanpet to Airport. 14.3 km of this would be underground. Corridor 2, of 22 km starting from Chennai Central Railway station to St. Thomas Mount. 9.7 km of this would be underground. Occupational health centre's role involved selection of miners and assessing their fitness to work under compressed air. Planning and execution of compression and decompression, health monitoring and treatment of compression related illnesses. More than thirty five

Compressed air tunneling and caisson work decompression procedures: development, problems, and solutions.

Multinational experience over many years indicates that all current air decompression schedules for caisson and compressed air tunnel workers are inadequate. All of them, including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration tables, produce dysbaric osteonecrosis. The problem is compounded because decompression sickness (DCS) tends to be underreported. Permanent damage in the form of central nervous system or brain damage may occur in compressed air tunnel workers, as seen on magnetic resonance imaging, in addition to dysbaric osteonecrosis. Oxygen decompression seems to be the only viab

Sub-Tenon Emphysema From Compressed Air Injury in a Patient With Marfan Syndrome.

Compressed air injuries to the globe are rare and typically associated with orbital fractures or a visible entry wound. The authors report the case of a 16-year-old male with Marfan syndrome who developed orbital emphysema strictly confined to the sub-Tenon's space following a compressed air injury, without any visible entry wound or orbital fracture. Clinical examination demonstrated a well-demarcated subconjunctival air pocket located approximately 3-4 mm posterior to the limbus, consistent with the anterior insertion of Tenon's capsule. Computed tomography confirmed a localized intraorbital

Urgent Subconjunctival Needle Decompression for Orbital Compartment Emphysema Caused by Compressed Air Injury.

Orbital compartment syndrome is a critical ophthalmic emergency that needs urgent diagnosis and treatment to prevent permanent vision loss caused by optic nerve compression or retinal ischemia. In this article, we present a child with orbital compartment syndrome caused by orbital emphysema as a result of a rare type of ocular trauma and introduce a simple technique to decompress the pressure. The patient was a 4-year-old boy who experienced a compressed air blast to his left eye. He presented to the emergency department with a frozen globe, tight orbit, and chemosis, without any evidence of g

Colon Perforation by Compressed Air: A Case Report and Short Review of Literature.

Barotrauma-associated perforation of the colon is not common and usually occurs due to the passage of compressed air through the anus. Most of the cases are accidental and done for fun often at the victim's workplace. Therefore, it is necessary that the workers should be made aware of the dangers of the equipment they regularly use at their workplace. Here, we describe one such case where a rice mill worker died when compressed air through an air pump pipe entered his rectum. His chief complaint was abdominal pain and breathing difficulty. Computed tomography scan of the abdomen and thorax sho

Hydrofluoric acid burn resulting from ignition of gas from a compressed air duster.

A young female suffered burns to her hand after the ignition of gas from a compressed air duster. After debridement and dressing, the patient continued to have pain out of proportion to injury that was refractory to intravenous morphine. The material safety data sheet revealed that the chemical used was 1,1-difluoroethane. High temperatures can cause decompensation to form hydrofluoric acid. Calcium gluconate gel was applied topically to the patient's burns, which caused prompt and complete relief of her pain. A review of different compressed air duster products revealed that the main ingredie

Laparoscopic Repair of Colorectal Perforations Induced by Compressed Air Pressure: A Case Report.

A compressed air nozzle has the potential to result in lethal injuries when handled inappropriately. Owing to the rarity of colorectal perforations due to barotrauma, no clear pathway to managing them has been established. We report an incident of a 33-year-old male patient who presented with tension pneumoperitoneum due to rectosigmoid perforations after being subjected to transanal compressed air insult. An emergency laparoscopic exploration with primary repair of the rectal perforation and Hartmann procedure were performed resulting in a smooth postoperative course. We hereby conclude that

Orbital Compressed Air and Diesel Explosion Injury Resembling Orbital Cellulitis: An Unusual Case.

BACKGROUND In this observational case report, we describe a case of orbital cellulitis caused by blunt trauma from an orbital compressed air and diesel explosion injury. CASE REPORT A 44-year-old man presented to our emergency department with a marked clinical worsening of right upper eyelid swelling, accompanied by pain, fever, and redness. Four days prior, the patient's right eye was struck by a pressurized diesel engine explosion. He sought treatment at another hospital, where an initial examination was conducted and a small laceration was found and immediately treated with irrigation and m

Pediatric orbital emphysema and pneumocephalus following a compressed air gun injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Orbital emphysema and pneumocephalus rarely occur without associated skull fractures. Over the past decades, a few case reports have documented compressed air injuries as a rare cause of orbital emphysema and pneumocephalus in the absence of concomitant skull fractures leading to various injuries. CASE PRESENTATION: We illustrate here a 12-year-old boy who presented with painless left eye swelling following an accidental compressed air blast injury. On examination, he exhibited mild bilateral visual acuity impairment. The left eyelids, periorbital region, and cheeks were swollen,

The rare cases of pneumatic colorectal perforation: A cautionary tale of compressed air misuse.

Barotrauma is a medical condition caused by sudden pressure changes in the body causing damage to multiple parts of the body. However, it is an infrequent occurrence when it comes to Colo-rectal perforation, wherein the trauma occurs due to the insufflation of compressed air through the anus. Several factors influence the outcome of a patient with colonic perforation due to barotrauma such as the severity of the injury, hemodynamic status of the patient, the patient's general health and well-being, the time taken for active medical/ surgical intervention since the injury, aggressive intravenou

Shunt-mediated decompression sickness in a compressed air worker with an atrial septal defect.

We report a compressed air worker who had diffuse cutaneous decompression sickness with pain in his left shoulder and visual disturbance characteristic of migraine aura after only his third hyperbaric exposure. The maximum pressure was 253 kPa gauge with oxygen decompression using the Swanscombe Oxygen Decompression Table. He was found to have a very large right-to-left shunt across a 9 mm atrial septal defect. He had transcatheter closure of the defect but had some residual shunting with release of a Valsalva manoeuvre. Thirty-two other tunnel workers undertook the same pressure profile and a

Integration of ceramic membrane and compressed air-assisted solvent extraction (CASX) for metal recovery.

In our previous publications, compressed air-assisted solvent extraction process (CASX) was developed and proved to be kinetically efficient process for metal removal. In the current study, CASX with a ceramic MF membrane integrated for separation of spent solvent was employed to remove and recover metal from wastewater. MF was operated either in crossflow mode or dead-end with intermittent flushing mode. Under crossflow mode, three distinct stages of flux vs. TMP (trans-membrane pressure) relationship were observed. In the first stage, flux increases with increasing TMP which is followed by t

Sponge divers of the Aegean and medical consequences of risky compressed-air dive profiles.

Historically, Turkey once had a substantial number of professional sponge divers, a population known for a relatively high incidence of diving-related conditions such as decompression sickness (DCS) and dysbaric osteonecrosis (DON). Sponge diving ended in the mid-1980s when nearly all of the sponges in the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas contracted a bacterial disease and the occupation became unprofitable. We reviewed the records of Turkish sponge divers for information on their level of knowledge, diving equipment, dive profiles, and occupational health problems. Information was collected by:

Subcutaneous and Orbital Emphysema With Pneumocephalus Secondary to Compressed-Air Gun Injury to the Face.

Compressed-air guns-devices that remove particles such as dust or wood/metal shavings using compressed air-are now widely used in industry. Although rare, the high-speed airflow they generate can cause injuries. A healthy 26-year-old man presented to our emergency department with swelling around his right eye and headache. His history revealed that the injury occurred during routine use of a compressed-air gun while cleaning work clothes. The blast of compressed air to his face resulted in subcutaneous emphysema, orbital emphysema, and pneumocephalus. No obvious entry site for the air could be

Barotrauma-induced Rectosigmoid Perforation Following Accidental High-pressure Compressed Air Insufflation: A Rare Case Report.

Colorectal barotrauma due to accidental high-pressure compressed air insufflation is rare. Prompt recognition and intervention are critical. In this report, we present a case of accidental anorectal insufflation of compressed air leading to hollow viscus perforation. Radiographs and computed tomography imaging demonstrated massive pneumoperitoneum, pneumomediastinum, dilated small bowel loops, and diffuse sigmoid wall edema. Emergency laparotomy revealed a 3 cm × 4 cm perforation at the rectosigmoid junction. A Hartmann's procedure was performed with thorough peritoneal lavage and pelvic drain

Occupational Medicine considerations during medical assessments for fitness to dive and for compressed air work.

Most medical examinations performed on divers and compressed air workers to assess their fitness to work focus on the risks associated with exposure to increased and changing environmental pressure. However, these employees are also exposed to numerous other hazards in their workplace that may have long- and short-term health impacts. The potential adverse impact must be assessed and risk managed by companies working with a Contract Medical Advisor (CMA) assigned to the works via a Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (HIRA) process. The appointed CMA should visit the work site to be in a
