Analyzing the Readability of Health Information Booklets on Cardiovascular Diseases.

A low level of patient health literacy represents a major reason for worse prognosis or reduced therapy adherence. Health information booklets are a major tool for improving patient's health literacy. This paper presents a computer-based readability analysis of patient information booklets from the cardiovascular domain. The study relies on 34 English booklets mostly on heart disease, prevention and procedures. It compares five different, well-established readability instruments. On average, readers of the assessed booklets have to visit school at least until the 9th U.S. school grade when app

Brief exposure to a self-paced computer-based reading programme and how it impacts reading ability and behaviour problems.

Basic literacy skills underlie much future adult functioning, and are targeted in children through a variety of means. Children with reading problems were exposed either to a self-paced computer programme that focused on improving phonetic ability, or underwent a classroom-based reading intervention. Exposure was limited to 3 40-min sessions a week, for six weeks. The children were assessed in terms of their reading, spelling, and mathematics abilities, as well as for their externalising and internalising behaviour problems, before the programme commenced, and immediately after the programme t

Educational interventions--computers for delivering education to children with respiratory illness and to their parents.

Educational interventions for children with asthma can result in both clinical and psychological improvements. However, traditional education programs have been hampered by lack of resources and doubts concerning long-term benefits. Researchers have looked to computer technology to overcome some of these obstacles and respiratory conditions have been the focus for a number of educational computer programs. Computer education packages should have a robust theoretical basis. Many programs aim to improve children's confidence, self-esteem and feelings of control, all of which are linked to compli

Effects of bottom-up and top-down intervention principles in emergent literacy in children at risk of developmental dyslexia: a longitudinal study.

This longitudinal study focused on the effects of two different principles of intervention in children at risk of developing dyslexia from 5 to 8 years old. The children were selected on the basis of a background questionnaire given to parents and preschool teachers, with cognitive and functional magnetic resonance imaging results substantiating group differences in neuropsychological processes associated with phonology, orthography, and phoneme-grapheme correspondence (i.e., alphabetic principle). The two principles of intervention were bottom-up (BU), "from sound to meaning", and top-down (T

Systematic identification and intervention for reading difficulty: case studies of children with EAL.

Literacy underpins education. There is now very widespread concern over standards of literacy for children from multi-cultural backgrounds, who are learning English as a second or subsequent language, and who may have special educational needs. Research evidence suggests that the earlier children's difficulties can be identified, the more effective (and cost-effective) intervention will be, provided that the intervention is tailored to the child's abilities and skills. Nicolson and Fawcett have developed systematic procedures for identifying children at risk for reading difficulty, together wi

Effects of a Digital Health Literacy Intervention on Porcine Cysticercosis Prevalence and Associated Household Practices in Iringa District, Tanzania.

Digital health is considered an opportunity to engage a wider community in disease control for public health. It has been used in healthcare consultation, in medical treatments and in reporting emergencies. The current study developed digital health literacy content for public health education and assessed its effects on porcine cysticercosis prevalence, pig-keeping style and pig pen and latrine qualities. The intervention was designed and evaluated on the prevention and control of porcine cysticercosis in the Iringa District of southern Tanzania. A quasi-controlled field trial with pre-interv

Developing the Alphabetic Principle to Aid Text-Based Augmentative and Alternative Communication Use by Adults With Low Speech Intelligibility and Intellectual Disabilities.

PURPOSE: We explored alphabet supplementation as an augmentative and alternative communication strategy for adults with minimal literacy. Study 1's goal was to teach onset-letter selection with spoken words and assess generalization to untaught words, demonstrating the alphabetic principle. Study 2 incorporated alphabet supplementation within a naming task and then assessed effects on speech intelligibility. METHOD: Three men with intellectual disabilities (ID) and low speech intelligibility participated. Study 1 used a multiple-probe design, across three 20-word sets, to show that our comput

Genetic differential susceptibility in literacy-delayed children: a randomized controlled trial on emergent literacy in kindergarten.

In this randomized controlled trial, 508 5-year-old kindergarten children participated, of whom 257 were delayed in literacy skills because they belonged to the lowest quartile of a national standard literacy test. We tested the hypothesis that some children are more susceptible to school-entry educational interventions than their peers due to their genetic makeup, and thus whether the dopamine receptor D4 gene moderated intervention effects. Children were randomly assigned to a control condition or one of two interventions involving computer programs tailored to the literacy needs of delayed

Auditory brainstem responses to stop consonants predict literacy.

OBJECTIVE: Precise temporal coding of speech plays a pivotal role in sound processing throughout the central auditory system, which, in turn, influences literacy acquisition. The current study tests whether an electrophysiological measure of this precision predicts literacy skills. METHODS: Complex auditory brainstem responses were analysed from 62 native German-speaking children aged 11-13years. We employed the cross-phaseogram approach to compute the quality of the electrophysiological stimulus contrast [da] and [ba]. Phase shifts were expected to vary with literacy. RESULTS: Receiver oper

Behavioural, cognitive, and computational risk factors for type 2 diabetes: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus represents a global public health challenge, with rising prevalence driven by complex interactions between lifestyle factors, health literacy, cultural beliefs, and demographic characteristics. Despite extensive research, few studies have systematically examined the interplay between behavioural determinants, cognitive awareness, misconceptions, and computational prediction models within integrated frameworks. AIM: This systematic review synthesises evidence on multidimensional risk factors for type 2 diabetes, examining lifestyle behaviours, health litera

The Role of Statistics Anxiety and Attitudes in Statistical Literacy Among Students With Learning Disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Statistical literacy is widely regarded as a core competency for academic achievement and informed decision-making across disciplines. However, many students experience elevated statistics anxiety and hold negative attitudes toward statistics, which can hinder their learning outcomes. The purpose of this study was to investigate differences between students with and without learning disabilities (SLD) and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in statistics anxiety, attitudes toward statistics, and statistical literacy, and to examine the mediating role of attitudes in the relation

Effect of a patient-driven perioperative intervention on health literacy: A stepped-wedge cluster randomised sub-study.

We hypothesised that a patient-driven safety checklist would enhance patients' health literacy. This study was conducted as a sub-study of a multicentre cluster trial with a stepped wedge design. Data were collected between March 2022 and February 2024. Healthcare personnel were partially blinded to group allocation and fully blinded to the health literacy questionnaire outcome. The study included seven surgical specialties (clusters) from a tertiary teaching hospital and two community hospitals in Norway. The patients were included from a pool within the cluster trial. In each of these seven

Fast ForWord®: the birth of the neurocognitive training revolution.

In 1996, I cofounded Scientific Learning Corporation (SLC) with Drs Michael Merzenich, William Jenkins, and Steve Miller. I coined the term "Cogniceutical" to describe the new type of company we envisioned. SLC was the first company cofounded by academic scientists with the mission of building neurocognitive interventions. Fast ForWord® is the registered trade name of the platform SLC built to translate basic neuroplasticity-based training research into clinical and educational products. Fast ForWord® was the first cognitive neurotherapeutic intervention, the first to be individually adaptive

Artificial intelligence in medicine: a clinician-oriented guide and operational framework to evaluate new AI devices.

BACKGROUND: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transitioning from experimental research to daily medical practice, yet the medical community's understanding of these tools remains largely confined to visible 'front-end' applications with which the clinician can directly interact (such as decision support systems and conversational agents). This perspective overlooks the proliferation of 'back-end' AI, the algorithms that are embedded within devices, systems, and hospital infrastructure that silently reconstruct data while remaining invisible to clinicians. This paper presents a clinician-
