PURPOSE: While generally reducing morbidity and mortality, electrical weapons have risks associated with their usage, including burn injuries and trauma associated with uncontrolled fall impacts. However, the prevalence of significant eye injury has not been investigated.
METHODS: We searched for incidents of penetrating eye injury from TASER® conducted electrical weapon (CEW) probes via open source media, litigation filings, and a survey of CEW law-enforcement master instructors.
RESULTS: We report 20 previously-unpublished cases of penetrating eye injury from electrical weapon probes in la

This study examines the medical implications of Conducted Energy Devices (CEDs) in law enforcement, of which TASER® is the brand most recognised. In order to develop understanding of TASER® use, this study undertook both a literature review and original research using data provided by a number of UK police forces. The comprehensive review of literature identified a range of injures, including both primary and secondary complications. Research was conducted into TASER® use in the United Kingdom using a number of data sets, including a retrospective study of some 60,000 uses of force. This data

Less-lethal weapons and tactics are being increasingly used by law enforcement to minimize the reliance on more-lethal force. While these methods are designated as "less-lethal," they can cause morbidity and mortality when deployed. Knowledge of these weapons and tactics can help direct the workup and management of patients with injuries from these methods and can protect clinicians from secondary exposure and injuries. This issue reviews the most common less-lethal weapons and tactics used by law enforcement, describes their mechanism of action, and discusses associated common injury patterns

BACKGROUND: Conducted electrical weapons (CEWs) are used by law enforcement for control of subjects by causing neuromuscular incapacitation. There has been scrutiny of CEWs and their potential role in the occasional sudden death of subjects in custody. There is a hypothesized causal relationship due to induced cardiac dysrhythmia. Previous work has not shown dysrhythmia induction in resting humans. However, these devices are not often used on resting individuals in the field.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine if exposure to a CEW in a physically exhausted human sample population caused detect

IMPORTANCE: Conducted electrical weapons (CEWs) are used broadly as a less-lethal force option for police officers. However, there is no clear picture of the possible health risks in humans on the basis of rigorously assessed scientific evidence from the international peer-reviewed literature.
OBJECTIVE: To synthesize and systematically evaluate the strength of published evidence for an association between exposure to different models of CEWs and adverse acute as well as chronic conditions.
EVIDENCE REVIEW: Following a preregistered review protocol, the literature search strategy was based o

While severe adverse effects are rare, evidence suggests significant physiological effects may be associated with the use of electrical incapacitation devices, or TASERs. In this case, a 28 year old Caucasian female with chronic, stable systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was voluntarily tased in a work-related training procedure. Days later, she presented to the emergency room with an acute flare of her lupus and a constellation of symptoms that lead to new diagnoses of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS), Raynaud phenomenon, acute lower left extremity deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and diffuse bilat

This paper provides the first US estimates and rates of non-fatal conductive energy device (CED)-related (eg, Taser) injuries relative to other types of legal intervention injuries treated in hospital emergency departments (EDs). The data used for this study were from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), including the Firearm Injury Surveillance Study (NEISS-FISS) and the All Injury Program (NEISS-AIP). Of an average annual 75,000 suspects treated for non-fatal legal intervention injuries, 11% had injuries that were associated with the use of a CED or Taser. Of the suspe

Conducted electrical weapons are designed to cause temporary electro-muscular incapacitation (EMI) without significant injury. The objective of this study was to assess the risk and cause of spinal injury due to exposure to a benchtop EMI device. Porcine subjects were exposed to 19 and 40 Hz electrical stimuli for a prolonged duration of 30 sec. X-ray imaging, necropsy, and accelerometry found that lumbosacral spinal fractures occurred in at least 89% of all subjects, regardless of the stimulus group, and were likely caused by musculoskeletal fatigue-related stress in the lumbosacral spine. TASER International's extended range electronic projectile (XREP) is intended to be fired from a shotgun, impact a threat, and apply remote neuromuscular incapacitation. This study investigated the corresponding potential of blunt impact injury and penetration. Forty-three XREP rounds were deployed onto two male human cadaver torsos at impact velocities between 70.6 and 95.9 m/sec (232 and 315 ft/sec). In 42 of the 43 shots fired, the XREP did not penetrate the abdominal wall, resulting in superficial wounds only. On one shot, the XREP's nose section separated prematurely in flight, resulting

BACKGROUND: Civil unrest is a critical societal challenge in many parts of the world. Crowd control weapons (including conducted energy devices, chemical irritants, kinetic impact projectiles, acoustic devices, and water cannons) produce agent-specific injuries that do not precisely map onto standard trauma frameworks. This narrative review synthesises the available evidence on the mechanisms, health effects, and emergency department management of casualties inflicted by crowd-control weapons.
MAIN BODY: Emergency department preparedness for civil unrest rests on surge capacity planning acros

BACKGROUND: Conducted Electrical Weapons (CEWs) are widely used worldwide by law enforcement as an intermediate less-lethal force option. While CEW direct electrical effects are generally transient, and direct significant injuries are rare but sometimes severe, secondary effects from associated falls related to neuromuscular effects while rare, may also be severe.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize the frequency, severity, and injury patterns of permanent paralysis associated with CEW deployments, with emphasis on fall-related and law-enforcement force related trauma.
METHODS: We analyzed a curated

INTRODUCTION: Directed energy weapons (DEWs) are emerging technologies that are transforming the modern battlespace. Despite their increasing presence, the associated injury patterns and health outcomes remain poorly understood. This review aims to consolidate existing knowledge on DEW-related injuries to assist military medical professionals in improving clinical care.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA-ScR guidelines and included peer-reviewed and grey literature from 1980 to Nov. 30, 2024. Databases searched included PubMed, MEDLINE, AccessMedicine (textbooks

To satisfy the Criminal Code of Canada's definition of a firearm, a barreled weapon must be capable of causing serious bodily injury or death to a person. Canadian courts have accepted the forensically established criteria of "penetration or rupture of an eye" as serious bodily injury. The minimal velocity of nonconventional ammunition required to penetrate the eye including airsoft projectiles has yet to be established. To establish minimal threshold requirements for eye penetration, empirical tests were conducted using a variety of airsoft projectiles. Using the data obtained from these test

BACKGROUND: There have been case reports following the use of a conducted electrical weapon (CEW) suggesting that these devices might affect coagulation or thrombosis in at-risk individuals. The aim of this manuscript therefore is firstly to explore this hypothesis by reviewing each of these cases and secondly to report the results of a prospective study exploring a priori the effects of electrical weapons on hematocytes in a group of human volunteers.
METHODS: First, we systematically reviewed all cases of adverse outcomes following CEW discharge that could be due to an effect on coagulation

Restraint related death in individuals in excited delirium syndrome (ExDS) is a rare event that has been the subject of controversies for more than 3 decades. The purpose of this retrospective study was to retrieve data on all restraint related deaths (RRD) that occurred in Ontario during an 8-year period and compare them with an earlier study on RRD in ExDS covering the period 1988-1995 in Ontario. The Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario website was consulted under verdicts and recommendations. The Canadian Legal Information Institute website was used to consult verdict explanations and co

This article presents a case of patricide. The murder was characterised by multiple blunt traumas and asphyxia. A mass of contused wounds was localised to the head and neck, and included the complete avulsion of the left eye (by an unknown tool), which was recovered near the cadaver. This case is of interest due to the possibility of identifying microscopic traces of the object that was used for the homicide by examining the skin margins around the ocular injury. The analysis was conducted using scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM/EDX). Analysis of
