Zygomycosis of upper respiratory tract, caused by Conidiobolus coronatus, in eight Bengalee males and one female is described. The clinical syndrome of the cases included initial coryza, epistaxis, intranasal tumor, nasal obstruction, broadening of bridge of nose with swelling of paranasal sinuses, dorsum of nose, alae nasi, cheek and glabella in all or majority of the cases. In addition upper lip or both lips and pharynx were involved in some cases. Swellings were fixed to the skin in seven cases and to the deeper tissues in five cases. The fungus was demonstrated by direct microscopy in the

To study the pathogenicity of Conidiobolus coronatus (C. coronatus) and Fusarium solani (F. solani) in animal models. Immunocompromised mice were treated with cyclophosphamide and prednisolone via intraperitoneal injection before and after inoculation. According to pathogenic characteristics of different fungi, C. coronatus was used to infect mice via intravenous inoculation, intraperitoneal inoculation, gastrointestinal infusion and intradermal inoculation methods. And F. solani was used to infect mice by inoculation via the abraded or normal skin. In the group of immunocompromised mice, C. c

A case of midfacial swelling in a middle aged woman proved to be caused by a fungus Conidiobolus coronatus has been reported. It is a very rare condition and the knowledge of this fungus affecting the rhinofacial region in human started since 1965 only. These cases pose diagnostic problem. The treatment with the combination of ketoconazole and the saturated solution of potassium iodide was effective for this fungal infection.

Fungi from the Conidiobolus genus have been implicated in the development of chronic invasive fungal rhinosinusitis, mainly in tropical countries. The mycosis associated to these fungi may cause irreversible facial deformities and is potentially fatal. The authors present the first case of a chronic invasive fungal rhinosinusitis due to Conidiobolus coronatus diagnosed in a 66-year-old Caucasian male patient, living in Portugal without any travels abroad and complaining of progressive refractory nasal obstruction, facial pain and anosmia. Upon the culture of samples collected during sinus endo

A new fungal pathogen of Culicinae (Diptera: Culicidae) adults, Conidiobolus macrosporus (Entomophthorales: Ancylistaceae), was detected and isolated during a survey of mosquito pathogens close to the city of Aruanã, Goiás State, in December 2014. The morphological characteristics of C. macrosporus are presented, and reasons for some uncertainty about this identification are discussed. The pathogenicity and high virulence of this fungus for Aedes aegypti were confirmed in laboratory conditions. Mortality of adults exposed to conidia was observed within 24h of exposure to the pathogen, and incr

A case of rhinofacial zygomycosis with of years duration, caused by Conidiobolus coronatus is described. The patient, a 72-years-old woman, presented with a bilateral distortion of the subcutaneous tissue and disfigurement of the face. Treatment with ketoconazole and potassium iodide did not prevent several relapses. At present she is still under treatment with fluconazole with clinical healing. Histopathological and mycological examination confirmed the dermatological diagnosis. An increasing number of cases of zygomycosis caused by fungi of the order Entomophthorales have also been reported

An essential component of the insect cellular response is phagocytosis. Analyses of the in vitro phagocytosis could be useful for the studies of the relationship between insects and their pathogens. Fungal metabolites are known to inhibit phagocytosis whereas components of the fungal cell wall stimulate phagocytosis. To achieve a better understanding of fungal pathogenesis in insects, haemocyte populations of two insect species susceptible to Conidiobolus coronatus infection (Galleria mellonella, Dendrolimus pini ) were compared with haemocytes of the resistant species (Calliphora erythrocepha

The clinical findings, pathology and mycology of a cluster of 5 ovine cases of rhinocerebral and nasal zygomycosis caused by Conidiobolus incongruus are described. All cases were in Border Leicester or Merino x Border Leicester ewes from a flock pastured in a low-lying paddock adjoining a small tidal river in subtropical Queensland (latitude 28 degrees S). These cases of zygomycosis are believed to be the first infections due to C incongruus recorded in animals other than humans. The disease was subacute in 4 animals with a course of up to several weeks. In these, the primary site of infection

OBJECTIVE: To report a rare genus of a fungal family commonly affecting the sinonasal region, which presented as a fungal granuloma of the inferior turbinate in an immunocompetent host. Such a case has not previously been reported.
CASE REPORT: A 49-year-old man presented with nasal conidiobolus limited to the left inferior turbinate, despite pre-operative fungal culture and tissue biopsy being negative for any fungal growth. On computed tomography scanning of the paranasal sinuses, and peri-operatively, the left inferior turbinate was seen to be enlarged and a bony, cartilaginous spur was fo

There are no standard guidelines on the management of Conidiobolus infections, and many antifungals have been used, either alone or in combination. Relapses are common even after successful management. Although localized, they can result in severe facial disfigurement and may rarely cause disseminated entomophthoromycosis, which can have fatal complications. We present a case of biopsy-proven conidiobolomycosis in a young immunocompetent male patient with progressive unilateral rhinofacial swelling who was successfully treated with itraconazole monotherapy and showed no relapse after 1 year of

A case of fatal disseminated fungal infection due to Conidiobolus coronatus in a patient with a renal transplant is described. This organism, known to cause localized infections in otherwise healthy individuals in the tropics, is now recognized as a cause of fatal infection in immunosuppressed hosts. Histologically, localized infections are characterized by lack of vessel invasion and the presence of an eosinophilic sleeve around fungal elements, called the Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon. The histologic findings in the present case were more typical of mucormycosis, and the correct diagnosis was

BACKGROUND: Conidiobolus species are largely known to cause rhinofacial cellulitis in healthy individuals but can manifest as an invasive infection in immunocompromised patients. Few cases have been described in the literature as they are difficult to diagnose and rarely observed in North America, particularly in the pediatric population.
CASE SUMMARY: A 15-year-old boy with a history of multiple bone marrow transplants for mixed phenotype acute leukemia presented to the emergency department with febrile neutropenia and chills. His clinical course was complicated by potential Rothia mucilagin

Fungal infections are common in tropical countries such as India. Very few clinical cases caused by the Entomophthorales Zygomycetes have been reported. Rhinofacial infection is a rare form of zygomycosis in humans, and only limited information regarding optimal treatment is available. We report here a rare case of rhinofacial Conidiobolus coronatus infection in a previously healthy 18-year-old man who presented with a fungal granuloma of the right inferior turbinate and face. Diagnosis was confirmed by microbiologic culture from a tissue biopsy. The infection was successfully treated with sur

We provide the first report of rhinofacial conidiobolomycosis caused by Conidiobolus coronatus in China. The patient was a 36-year-old male rice farmer from Jiang Xi province who presented with diffuse swelling with classical centrofacial distribution and involvement of the right paranasal sinuses. Histopathology showed granulomas with hyphae surrounded by an eosinophilic sheath (Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon). Culture of biopsy specimens on Sabouraud's dextrose agar led to the growth of fungi with microscopically visible conidiophores and terminal spherical conidia (primary conidium), with mul

This is a case of Conidiobolus lamprauges rhinitis in a Goldendoodle, that was presented for evaluation of sneezing, coughing, lethargy, as well as right-sided epistaxis and clear ocular discharge. Computed tomography revealed a large amount of soft tissue within the right nasal passage that obscured the osseous turbinates from the right maxillary canine tooth to the right side of the choanae. Biopsies revealed eosinophilic granulomas with variable number of basophilic to negatively staining, septate, fungal hyphae with non-parallel walls and irregular branching that were subsequently determin

Conidiobolomycosis is a rare fungal infection that affects adults in tropical regions. We report a 42-year-old male patient who was referred to the Sulaiman Al Habib Hospital, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), in 2013 with excessive nasal bleeding and a suspected nasal tumour. He reported having briefly visited central India nine months previously. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed a highly vascularised mass in the nasal cavity. However, after surgical excision, initial treatment with amphotericin B deoxycholate was unsuccessful and the disease progressed, leading to e

Conidiobolus lamprauges, a soil and plant entomophthoralean fungus, has been reported only in a horse and, more recently, in sheep with rhinopharyngeal entomophthoramycosis. Thus, little information is available to enable proper identification of this pathogen and its differentiation from other saprotrophic and pathogenic Conidiobolus species. Using classical mycological tools and molecular methodologies, we report for the first time the taxonomic and phylogenetic description of three C. lamprauges isolates recovered from sheep with rhinopharyngeal entomophthoramycosis. The distinctive clinica
