Conjunctival Amyloidosis: A Report of Two Cases with Review of Literature - 2000-2020.

Amyloidosis is a complex multisystem disorder characterized by deposition of an aberrant protein in tissues and results in disruption of the normal organ function. Localized amyloidosis is a rare disorder. It commonly affects the head-and-neck region, and only 4% of these lesions are encountered in the orbital region. Hence, conjunctival amyloidosis is a very rare entity. It is thought to be a manifestation of local immunologic disorders. Amyloidosis of conjunctiva is more often localized with no other systemic features. Here, we present two cases of unilateral conjunctival amyloidosis, one wi

Conjunctival Inverted Papilloma Progressing to Carcinoma. First Report in Horse.

A five-year-old, entire female Arabian horse with a 6-month history of a non-painful nodule on the conjunctiva of the right eye was evaluated. Ophthalmological examination showed a firm, smooth and fleshy conjunctival mass that raised the suspicion of a conjunctival neoplasm. Histological evaluations showed that the mass was composed of an endophytic growth consisting of numerous long papillary projections of hyperplastic stratified squamous epithelium supported by thin fibrovascular stalks. Typical features of squamous cell carcinoma with disorganized cell growth and infiltration of surroundi

Immunohistochemical profiling including beta-catenin in conjunctival melanocytic lesions.

Conjunctival melanocytic lesions encompass a group of clinically diverse, benign to malignant, neoplasms that may contain overlapping histopathological features, making definitive diagnosis challenging in some cases. In this series, we compared multiple immunohistochemical (IHC) markers in 11 conjunctival nevi, 10 primary acquired melanosis (PAM) lesions, and 11 conjunctival melanomas. Immunostains included the melanocytic markers HMB-45 and Melan-A, as well as the proliferative marker Ki-67. Loss of beta-catenin expression has been associated with more aggressive clinical disease in cutaneous

Unexpected histological findings in pterygium.

Pterygium is thought to be a common benign lesion of the corneo-conjunctival limbus. We report a case in which the pathological examination of an apparently trivial pterygium disclosed the presence of a conjunctival intraepithelial neoplasm in a 53-year-old white male who has been living in Kenya for 35 years. An atypical grayish area on the lesion convinced the surgeon to request the histological examination.

Prognostic factors and survival for malignant conjunctival melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma over four decades.

PURPOSE: To determine the epidemiology and survival of primary conjunctival malignant neoplasms. METHODS: Retrospective analysis of primary malignant conjunctival neoplasms using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database from 1973 to 2012. RESULTS: Of 1661 cases, the most common neoplasms are squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) at 54.8% and melanoma at 38.8%. Mean diagnostic age for melanoma was 62.1 compared to 65.5 years for SCC (p = 0.002). 52.2% of melanoma are male versus 77.4% of SCC (p < 0.001). For SCC only age (HR: 1.09, 95% CI:1.04-1.14) is a predictor of survival. For melanom

Single-fraction low-energy superficial x-ray radiation for conjunctiva Kaposi sarcoma: A case report.

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a malignant vascular neoplasm associated with human herpesvirus type 8 (HHV-8) infection. Conjunctival involvement is very rare and is considered part of classic KS. We present the case of a 57-year-old female patient with skin lesions diagnosed as classic KS not associated with HIV or immunosuppression, who later developed a conjunctival lesion. This lesion was treated with superficial radiotherapy in a single fraction using a low-energy X-ray device, resulting in good clinical outcomes and no signs of conjunctival recurrence after 5 years of follow-up. Single-fractio

Conjunctival involvement in paraneoplastic pemphigus.

Paraneoplastic pemphigus is a recently described autoimmune inflammatory mucocutaneous disease associated with an underlying neoplasm. Although histopathologic and direct immunofluorescence findings of involved skin and mucous membranes are consistent with pemphigus vulgaris, indirect immunofluorescence and immunoprecipitation study results are unique. We treated two patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and paraneoplastic pemphigus. Both patients had bilateral bulbar conjunctival hyperemia and diffuse papillary tarsal conjunctival reactions. One patient had sloughing of conjunctival epithelium

Conjunctival Melanoma Metastasis to the Contralateral Orbit.

BACKGROUND: Malignant melanoma predominantly occurs in whites, and is potentially fatal. Distant metastases often occur in lung, liver, brain, and could occur without prior regional disease. Conjunctival melanoma metastasis to contralateral orbit has never been reported. PATIENT PRESENTATION: A 60-year-old man who underwent a left primary conjunctival neoplasm resection 11 months ago presented for the evaluation of a conjunctival dark-colored mass with a bulging left lower eyelid that directly invaded the orbits bilaterally. A histopathologic examination and immunohistochemistry confirmed met

[Interferon alpha 2β, partial keratectomy and amniotic membrane transplant for the treatment of a recurrent conjunctival squamous carcinoma].

CASE REPORT: An 80-year-old woman diagnosed with a recurrent squamous conjuctival carcinoma treated with surgical excision of the lesion, zonal reconstruction and topical Interferon alpha 2-β. DISCUSSION: Squamous conjunctival carcinoma is the most frequent neoplasm of the ocular surface. Surgical removal of the lesion is the traditional treatment, but this technique has a high recurrence rate. Interferons are glycoproteins that trigger intracellular pathways with antiviral and antitumoral properties. Recent studies have proven their activity against conjunctival carcinoma.

Isolated hemangiopericytoma of the conjunctiva.

PURPOSE: To report a unique presentation of hemangiopericytoma and discuss the clinical course, pathological features, and management of this tumor. OBSERVATIONS: An otherwise healthy 54-year-old Caucasian female presented with a painless conjunctival mass. The lesion gradually enlarged over a three-week period and was unresponsive to corticosteroid treatment. The mass was surgically removed, and histopathologic findings were consistent with hemangiopericytoma. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPORTANCE: Conjunctival hemangiopericytoma should be considered in patients with conjunctival lesions unresponsive

Conjunctival Melanocytic Neoplasia.

This article explores pigmented conjunctival lesions, emphasizing their clinical and histopathologic features. It highlights the diagnostic challenges posed by the overlapping clinical morphologies of benign, premalignant, and malignant melanocytic proliferations; biopsies of such lesions may be evaluated by dermatopathologists. This review discusses the distinct origins and molecular genetics of conjunctival melanocytic neoplasms, especially in sun-exposed areas like the bulbar conjunctiva, which share similarities with their cutaneous counterparts. Uveal melanoma, which is not the topic of t

Eye-Sparing Treatment for Diffuse Invasive Conjunctival Melanoma.

The management of patients with diffuse invasive conjunctival melanoma focuses on local tumor control and screening for metastasis. Despite the lack of consensus on the benefit of sentinel lymph node biopsy for these neoplasms, the information obtained by histopathology is useful for tumor staging and treatment planning. Due to the lack of evidence of survival improvement, orbital exenteration is being performed with diminishing frequency. We describe a patient with diffuse invasive conjunctival melanoma and lymph node involvement treated by tumor debulking, brachytherapy (custom unshielded ra

Conjunctival leiomyosarcoma: A fairly common tumour in an uncommon site.

BACKGROUND: Leiomyosarcomas of soft tissue are malignant tumours that are not infrequently encountered in clinical medicine and histopathology. Such sarcomas of the eye are, however, a rare occurrence. PURPOSE: Herein, the histopathological features of a case of conjunctival leiomyosarcoma are described. A 38-year-old HIV-positive male, who was otherwise fit and healthy, presented with redness of his right eye and a mass of the conjunctiva. Clinically, he did not have any soft-tissue masses elsewhere in the body. METHOD: He underwent monoblock excision of the conjunctival mass which was conf

Surgical management of ocular surface squamous neoplasms: the experience from a cornea center.

PURPOSE: To report the surgical outcomes of treatment for ocular surface squamous neoplasms. METHODS: Retrospective review of squamous neoplasms of the ocular surface managed at a cornea center over a 15-year period. Surgical treatment was divided into two methods. The procedure was identical within each group. One group of patients was treated with simple excision of the lesion. The second group of patients was treated with excision followed by focal cryotherapy to the involved limbus and/or conjunctival margin. Follow-up is reported. RESULTS: A total of 28 lesions were reviewed. Included w

Malignant melanoma presenting as amelanotic caruncular lesion in a child.

Conjunctival melanoma is a rare malignant neoplasm that can present in childhood in any part of the conjunctiva. The infrequency with which conjunctival melanoma is encountered in childhood caruncular lesions makes it a formidable but important aspect of the differential diagnosis. We report the case of a 10-year-old boy who presented with a left caruncular lesion. On histopathologic analysis, the lesion was determined to be BRAF-negative invasive melanoma arising in association with melanocytic nevus. The melanoma was excised using no-touch technique and double freeze thaw cryotherapy. A full

Compound nevus of the cornea simulating a foreign body.

PURPOSE: To report a corneal nevus, without conjunctival involvement, that clinically simulated a metallic foreign body. METHODS: Case report with clinicopathologic correlation. RESULTS: A 22-year-old man developed a superficial pigmented lesion of his left cornea. It was suspected to be a chronically retained foreign body, but a melanocytic neoplasm could not be excluded. The lesion was removed by lamellar keratectomy and proved histopathologically to be a compound nevus of the cornea, without conjunctival involvement. CONCLUSIONS: Melanocytic nevus can rarely occur in the cornea. Involvem
