Consanguinity and associated perinatal outcomes, including stillbirth.

BACKGROUND: Consanguinity defined as the sexual union between two related individuals has been previously an infrequent practice in Australia, but recently there has been migration from countries with widespread practice of consanguinity. There is limited and conflicting evidence in the literature that suggests consanguinity to be associated with adverse obstetric outcomes. AIM: To assess the effect of consanguinity on perinatal outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of singleton births over a ten-year period at an Australian tertiary hospital. The data were extracted from

Is consanguinity a risk factor for keratoconus?

PURPOSE: To determine whether consanguinity is a risk factor for keratoconus (KC). METHODS: A questionnaire was distributed to all patients presenting to St. John Eye Hospital, Jerusalem, Israel. Questionnaire included data on demographic characteristics and potential risk factors. Patients were divided into two groups: cases with KC, in at least one eye, who were diagnosed by the attending ophthalmologist on the basis of abnormal corneal topography and at least one of the common signs of the disease; and controls presenting for problems other than KC and free of systemic and ocular condition

Gillespie syndrome: additional findings and parental consanguinity.

Aniridia is a rare condition whose presence should alert clinicians to the possibility of other abnormalities. One of the differential diagnoses that should be considered is Gillespie syndrome, in which aniridia is associated with cerebellar ataxia and mental retardation. There are only 21 reported cases of Gillespie syndrome. The goal of this paper is to describe the clinical manifestations of a girl born to a consanguineous couple who presented with typical findings of the Gillespie syndrome, in addition to previously undescribed alterations of her distal extremities.

Potter sequence and consanguinity--a case report.

The first child of first-cousin parents had Potter sequence, including rudimentary, dysplastic kidneys and pulmonary hypoplasia. The girl died after 5 h. During the next pregnancy, early fetal ultrasound was normal. In the 33rd week, however, ultrasound revealed oligohydramniosis and reduced renal size. After 40 weeks of gestation a healthy girl of normal weight without any stigmata was born. Her pulmonary function and X-ray were normal. Renal ultrasound demonstrated small kidneys with high echogenicity. There was a transient renal insufficiency with a peak serum creatinine of 160 mumol/l. At

Prediction of consanguinity using human DNA fingerprints.

DNA fingerprinting was performed to verify the pedigree structure of a family under investigation for an unusual case of beta thalassaemia. A higher than expected proportion of hypervariable bands was shared by the proband and his mother, leading to suspicion that the child had been the product of a consanguineous mating. Further analysis of the mother's brother showed that he was almost certainly the proband's father.

Consanguineous marriage in Iran.

Consanguineous marriage is a major feature of family systems in south-west Asia. The aim of the present study was to determine the current prevalence and patterns of consanguinity in Iran as a means of assessing the associated requirement for genetic counselling services. Consanguinity was studied in 12 ethnic/religious populations, the Persians (Shi'a and Sunni), Kurds (Shi'a and Sunni), Lurs, Azaris, Baluchis, Zabolis, Turkamans, Bakhtiaris, Ghashghais and Arabs. A multi-stage sampling design was used with a representative total sample of 306 343 couples. The overall rate of consanguineous m

Consanguinity and congenital heart disease in Saudi Arabia.

First-cousin marriage may be a significant risk factor for specific types of congenital heart disease in a consanguineous population. Inbreeding studies suggest an autosomal recessive component in the cause of some congenital heart defects. We studied a large sample of patients with structural congenital heart defects (CHD) identified through the Congenital Heart Disease Registry at King Faisal Specialist Hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. After exclusions of chromosome abnormalities and non-participation, data were collected on 891 consecutive patients who were registered between January and A

A review of the reproductive consequences of consanguinity.

BACKGROUND: Consanguinity is the close union, sexual relationship or marriage between persons who have common biological ancestors usually up to about 2nd cousins. Contrary to general opinion consanguinity is quite common and is practiced worldwide. It is an important topic as while rates of consanguineous unions in certain society have decreased over time, rates have remained stable or increased in other societies with rates as high as 80.6% in some communities. Our aim was to conduct a review looking at general aspects of consanguinity and any published reproductive outcomes in literature. W

Consanguinity and reproductive wastage in the Palestinian Territories.

Many studies have found that consanguinity poses a threat to child mortality and health and can also pose a threat to offspring survival before birth. However, there are conflicting findings with some studies having found no increased risk on offspring survival associated with consanguinity. Data from a population-based survey conducted in 2004 in the Palestinian Territories was used to assess the risk of consanguinity on offspring survival. The analysis was conducted on 4418 women aged 15-49 who were asked whether or not they had experienced a stillbirth or a spontaneous abortion. These two o

Does consanguinity affect the severity of pre-eclampsia?

To determine whether consanguinity is more likely to be associated with severe forms of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia. Presuming a pure genetic contribution, we speculated that consanguineous marriages would increase the occurrence of severe forms of pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, through an expected increased chance for homozygosity to the putative gene. The study is a clinical case series on pre-eclamptic/eclamptic primiparae delivered at Princess Badea Teaching Hospital, which is a tertiary referral center. The internationally accepted definitions for hypertension, proteinuria, mild and severe pre-ecla

Parental consanguinity in specific types of congenital anomalies.

Parental consanguinity, as a recognized risk factor for congenital anomalies, has mainly been studied with a focus on the types of parental relationships and their effects on genetic syndromes or birth defects in general. The present work analyzed the association between parental consanguinity and congenital anomalies, split, when possible, into clinical subtypes, in an attempt to obtain some insight into their recognized etiological heterogeneity. The material consisted of 34,102 newborn infants, affected by one of 47 selected congenital anomaly types, ascertained by the Latin-American Collab

Consanguinity and complex cardiac anomalies with situs ambiguus.

A survey of British born Asian and English populations of children with congenital cardiac anomalies showed an increased incidence in the Muslim Asian population of complex lesions with visceral heterotaxia. There is a very high incidence of parental consanguinity among Muslim Asian children with complex congenital cardiac anomalies that is even higher than in the general Muslim Asian population of the area studied. The evidence suggests an important recessive genetic component in complex cardiac lesions with visceral heterotaxia, but segregation analysis does not support pure recessive inheri

Phenotypes and genotypes in non-consanguineous and consanguineous primary microcephaly: High incidence of epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Primary microcephaly (PM) is defined as a significant reduction in occipitofrontal circumference (OFC) of prenatal onset. Clinical and genetic heterogeneity of PM represents a diagnostic challenge. METHODS: We performed detailed phenotypic and genomic analyses in a large cohort (n = 169) of patients referred for PM and could establish a molecular diagnosis in 38 patients. RESULTS: Pathogenic variants in ASPM and WDR62 were the most frequent causes in non-consanguineous patients in our cohort. In consanguineous patients, microarray and targeted gene panel analyses reached a diagno

Prenatal and preconception genetic counseling for consanguinity: Consanguineous couples' expectations, experiences, and perspectives.

Consanguinity, the union between two individuals who are related as second cousins or closer, is a long-standing and respected tradition in many communities. Although there are social and economic benefits of consanguineous unions, offspring are at increased risk of having an inherited genetic condition or congenital anomaly. Genetic counseling services for consanguinity are available to couples at many centers. However, little is known about patient expectations of and experiences with genetic counseling for this indication, or their perspectives on genetic screening relevant to family planni

Incidence of typically Severe Primary Immunodeficiency Diseases in Consanguineous and Non-consanguineous Populations.

PURPOSE: Primary immunodeficiency diseases are considered to be rare diseases; however, data on the exact birth incidences of these diseases are sparse. Southern Israel is inhabited by two major populations: a relatively non-consanguineous Jewish population and a highly consanguineous Muslim Bedouin population. We sought to calculate the incidences of typically severe primary immunodeficiency diseases and compare the incidences in these populations. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all typically severe primary immunodeficiency diseases evaluated at a single center from January 1, 1996 to

Esophageal Atresia with Tracheoesophageal Fistula Is Associated with Consanguinity.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between nonsyndromic esophageal atresia with tracheoesophageal fistula (EA-TEF) and consanguinity. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective study comparing the incidence of EA-TEF between a low-consanguineous Jewish population and a high-consanguineous Bedouin population. All patients were treated at Soroka University Medical Center, the only tertiary medical center in southern Israel. RESULTS: From 2000 to 2022, 579 130 children were born in southern Israel, and 386 915 (66.8%) were Jewish, and 192 215 were Bedouin Muslims. A total of 96 patients were diagnosed wi

The Influence of Consanguinity on Familial Clefting Among Palestinians.

INTRODUCTION: Orofacial clefts (OFC) are the most common congenital craniofacial anomaly. The relationship between intermarriage (consanguinity) and positive family history for OFC is not well described. Consanguinity rates in developed countries are <1% but are considerably higher in the Middle East (45%). Familial clefting rates in developed countries are under 20% but in the Middle East are reported at 30% or higher. OBJECTIVE: To determine OFC demographics and to clarify the relationship between consanguinity and familial clefting among Palestinians. DESIGN: The Palestinian Congenial Ano

Harlequin fetus born from Consanguinity: A deleterious case report.

Harlequin Ichthyosis (HI) is a dreadful skin disorder with steady rise of cases with prolonged survival. Harlequin fetus follows an autosomal recessive pattern with the incidence of 1in 300,000 live births. In the succeeding case report, a male child was born with keratinized and kaleidoscopic diamond pattern of skin suggestive of HI. He was born at 36th week of gestation from consanguineous marriage. The newborn remained under extensive intensive care in a tertiary care unit where he breathed his last on 11th day after birth. Prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling is of vital importance du
