Water use and conservation in the operating room and perioperative setting: A scoping review.

Public health and food security in the United States depend on a reliable supply of fresh water. Freshwater availability is worsening, and prolonged drought conditions have affected large portions of the country. Hospitals are major consumers of water, and processes related to the operating room may present an opportunity to improve water conservation. A scoping review of the MEDLINE, Science Citation Index-Expanded, Emerging Sources Citation Index, and Embase databases was conducted for articles addressing water use and interventions for water conservation from January 1, 1948, to March 26, 2

Future-proofing the mixing zone concept in water resources management: an industrial perspective.

Mixing zones allow limited exceedances of Environmental Quality Standards within defined areas of receiving waters, yet their implementation across Europe remains uneven and increasingly scrutinised. This study evaluates how environmental change, regulatory evolution, and industrial water-use practices may influence the future viability of mixing zones. A cross-European assessment was conducted using (i) regulatory and technical guidance, (ii) a survey of 22 fuel manufacturing facilities in 14 countries, and (iii) CORMIX near-field modelling to test sensitivity to effluent and ambient paramete

Tanks in series versus compartmental model configuration: considering hydrodynamics helps in parameter estimation for an N2O model.

The choice of the spatial submodel of a water resource recovery facility (WRRF) model should be one of the primary concerns in WRRF modelling. However, currently used mechanistic models are limited by an over-simplified representation of local conditions. This is illustrated by the general difficulties in calibrating the latest N2O models and the large variability in parameter values reported in the literature. The use of compartmental model (CM) developed on the basis of accurate hydrodynamic studies using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can take into account local conditions and recircula

Status of water use and potential of rainwater harvesting for replacing centralized supply system in remote mountainous areas: a case study.

The failure of the centralized water supply system forced XY community to become more dependent on uncertain and unstable water sources. The results of surveying 50 households showed that 89.18% of total households depended on water collected from rivers, which contributed 58.3% of the total water volume used for the domestic demands. The average water volume consumed was 19.5 liters/person/day (l/p/d), and 86.5% of households used more than one source; 13.5% of households collected water only from rivers, and 45.94% of families had rainwater harvesting (RWH) for their activities (domestic wat

Assessment of rainwater harvesting potential from rooftops in Jordan's Twelve Governorates.

Rooftop rainwater harvesting (RRWH) offers a potential solution to Jordan's pressing water scarcity problems. Yet, its feasibility and benefits necessitate a thorough assessment, particularly as existing studies on the subject are outdated and often constrained by limited scope or small data sets. To this end, our study assessed the potential of RRWH in Jordan's 12 governorates, utilizing historical rainfall data from 1987 to 2018 and official statistics on population and rooftop areas. The analyses used the Ripple Method and Water Balance Model to determine potential harvestable water volumes

Increasing urban water self-sufficiency: new era, new challenges.

Urban water supplies are traditionally based on limited freshwater resources located outside the cities. However, a range of concepts and techniques to exploit alternative water resources has gained ground as water demands begin to exceed the freshwater available to cities. Based on 113 cases and 15 in-depth case studies, solutions used to increase water self-sufficiency in urban areas are analyzed. The main drivers for increased self-sufficiency were identified to be direct and indirect lack of water, constrained infrastructure, high quality water demands and commercial and institutional pres

YOLO-based real-time floating debris counting in urban rivers for flood monitoring and water resource management.

Urban flooding is increasingly exacerbated by the accumulation of floating debris in rivers, which obstructs water flow, degrades water quality, and poses significant risks to human safety and environmental sustainability. Effective monitoring of floating debris is therefore critical for early flood warning and long-term water resource management. This study presents a real-time monitoring framework that integrates deep learning-based object detection models, You Only Look Once (YOLO) with video surveillance for the identification and quantification of floating debris in urban rivers. Drain blocking: an effective treatment for reducing dissolved organic carbon loss and water discolouration in a drained peatland.

Peatlands are an important terrestrial carbon store. However, heightened levels of degradation in response to environmental change have resulted in an increased loss of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and an associated rise in the level of discolouration in catchment waters. A significant threat to peatland sustainability has been the installation of artificial drainage ditches. However, recent restoration schemes have pursued drain blocking as a possible strategy for reducing degradation, fluvial carbon loss and water discolouration. This paper investigates the effect of open cut drainage and

Life cycle assessment of forecasting scenarios for urban water management: A first implementation of the WaLA model on Paris suburban area.

A framework and an associated modeling tool to perform life cycle assessment (LCA) of urban water system, namely the WaLA model, has been recently developed. In this paper, the WaLA model is applied to a real case study: the urban water system of the Paris suburban area, in France. It aims to verify the capacity of the model to provide environmental insights to stakeholder's issues related to future trends influencing the system (e.g., evolution of water demand, increasing water scarcity) or policy responses (e.g., choices of water resources and technologies). This is achieved by evaluating a

Technical and economic potential of rainwater harvesting systems in semi-arid urban areas: Multicriteria diagnosis for comprehensive evaluation and optimization.

Water scarcity in urban areas of the Global South remains a major challenge. While rainwater harvesting systems (RWHS) are promoted, they often ignore complex hydrological, demographic, and urban interactions. This article explores the question: How to comprehensively assess the technical and economic viability of RWHS, considering housing types, consumption patterns, and variable rainfall, in urban settlements of the Global South? This study presents indicators for diagnosing and assessing the technical and economic efficiency of the RHWS. Six scenarios were analyzed by combining different ra

Is There a Spatial Relationship between Urban Landscape Pattern and Habitat Quality? Implication for Landscape Planning of the Yellow River Basin.

The extent to which landscape spatial patterns can impact the dynamics and distribution of biodiversity is a key geography and ecology issue. However, few previous studies have quantitatively analyzed the spatial relationship between the landscape pattern and habitat quality from a simulation perspective. In this study, the landscape pattern in 2031 was simulated using a patch-generating simulation (PLUS) model for the Yellow River Basin. Then, the landscape pattern index and habitat quality from 2005 to 2031 were evaluated using the Fragstats 4.2 and the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Serv
