Fatal injuries in the United States construction industry involving cranes 1984-1994.

There is little published information concerning the epidemiology of injuries in the construction industry involving cranes other than for electrical injury from power line contact. For the 11-year period of 1984 through 1994, the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) investigated 502 deaths in 479 incidents involving cranes in the construction industry. Electrocution was the largest category, with 198 deaths (39%) reported. Other major categories were assembly/dismantling (58 deaths, 12%), boom buckling (41 deaths, 8%), crane upset/overturn (37 deaths, 7%), and rigging failu

The structure of near misses and occupational accidents in the polish construction industry.

Near misses are referred to in literature as precursors of occupational accidents. These events, and their relationships with occupational accidents in various economic sectors have been the subject of research in several countries around the world. In Poland, there has not been a lot of research with regards to near misses in the construction industry, and the published materials are of a very general nature. This article aims to fill the existing research gap regarding the relationship between near misses and occupational accidents in the Polish construction industry. The aim of the research

Accident patterns and prevention measures for fatal occupational falls in the construction industry.

Contributing factors to 621 occupational fatal falls have been identified with respect to the victim's individual factors, the fall site, company size, and cause of fall. Individual factors included age, gender, experience, and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Accident scenarios were derived from accident reports. Significant linkages were found between causes for the falls and accident events. Falls from scaffold staging were associated with a lack of complying scaffolds and bodily action. Falls through existing floor openings were associated with unguarded openings, inappropri

[Occupational medicine insight into the problem of occupational stress in the construction industry].

According to the present study, in addition to the high accident rate, work in the building trade is characterized by intense muscle strain and constrained physical posture. In bricklaying, for example, a worker moves by hand up to seven tons of stone per shift. Consequently, various health complaints occur far more frequently in this occupation than in the other occupational groups, for instance, back complaints (71%), severe fatigue (58%), pain in the arms and hands (42%), headache (40%) and leg pain (34%). The most complained of factors include effects of the weather (74%), draft (50%), noi

The impact of importing on the CO2 intensity of the global and national construction industries.

CO2 intensity is a valuable indicator for investigating the amount of CO2 emissions prevented by importing relative to the economic costs the importer pays for international trade; this plays a significant role in mitigating climate change and promoting environmental sustainability. This study explores the effect of importing on the CO2 intensity of the construction industry by establishing an analytical framework that divides the total CO2 intensity into aggregate CO2 intensity in imported products (AII) and aggregate CO2 intensity in domestic products (AID), and targets the gap between AII a

Development of Environmentally Clean Construction Materials Using Industrial Waste.

The accumulated waste generated from industries severely affects environmental conditions. Using waste as a construction material or soil stabilization is an emerging area in the construction industry. Introducing new additive materials to strengthen local soils using industrial waste is an inexpensive and more effective method to improve the soil. In light of this, this study aims to develop environmentally clean construction materials for stabilizing natural loam (NL) using red mud (RM), blast furnace slag (BFS), and lime production waste (LPW). Nine different mixtures were prepared with fou

[Construction of high sulphite-producing industrial strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae].

In the process of beer storage and transportation, off-flavor can be produced for oxidation of beer. Sulphite is important for stabilizing the beer flavor because of its antioxidant activity. However, the low level of sulphite synthesized by the brewing yeast is not enough to stabilize beer flavor. Three enzymes involve sulphite biosynthesis in yeast. One of them, APS kinase (encoded by MET14) plays important role in the process of sulphite formation. In order to construct high sulphite-producing brewing yeast strain for beer production, MET14 gene was cloned and overexpressed in industrial st

Contact dermatitis in the construction industry: the role of filaggrin loss-of-function mutations.

BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of contact dermatitis (CD) and respiratory symptoms has been observed in the construction industry, probably due to widespread exposure to irritants and allergens. It is unknown whether carriers of loss-of-function mutations in the gene encoding filaggrin (FLG), a known risk gene for eczema and asthma, are at increased risk. OBJECTIVES: To investigate associations of FLG mutations with CD and respiratory symptoms in Dutch construction workers. METHODS: A questionnaire including items on dermal and respiratory symptoms such as wheeze, shortness of breath and asth

Falls from Height in the Construction Industry: A Critical Review of the Scientific Literature.

Globally, falls from height (FFH) are a substantial public health jeopardy and are among the important leading causes of serious and fatal injuries for construction workers. A comprehensive understanding of the causal factors in FFH incidents is urgently required; however, the literature appears to lack a scientific review of FFH. In this study, 297 articles that contribute to the topic of fall incidents were reviewed. Seventy-five (75) articles met the criteria for relevance and were aggregated in a database to support a critical review. A synthesis of macro-variables approach was adopted rat

Pattern extraction for high-risk accidents in the construction industry: a data-mining approach.

Accidents involving falls and falling objects (group I) are highly frequent accidents in the construction industry. While being hit by a vehicle, electric shock, collapse in the excavation and fire or explosion accidents (group II) are much less frequent, they make up a considerable proportion of severe accidents. In this study, multiple-correspondence analysis, decision tree, ensembles of decision tree and association rules methods are employed to analyse a database of construction accidents throughout Iran between 2007 and 2011. The findings indicate that in group I, there is a significant c

Non-fatal construction industry fall-related injuries treated in US emergency departments, 1998-2005.

BACKGROUND: There is a growing recognition that common occupational injury surveillance systems in the US fail to reflect true injury risk; this failure limits efforts to accurately monitor efforts to prevent work-related injuries on a national level. METHODS: Data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System occupational supplement (NEISS-Work) were used to describe fall-related injuries treated in US emergency departments among workers in the construction industry (1998-2005). These data do not require workers' compensation as the payer in order to be classified as work-related.

Use of engineered nanomaterials in the construction industry with specific emphasis on paints and their flows in construction and demolition waste in Switzerland.

One sector where the use of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) is supposed to offer novel or improved functionalities is the construction industry. During the renovation or demolition of buildings, ENMs contained in former construction materials will enter recycling systems or become construction waste. Currently, information about ENM flows in these processes is insufficient. The potential for the release of ENMs from this waste into the environment is unknown, as are the environmental impacts. To evaluate whether there is currently any nano-relevant construction and demolition waste (C&DW) orig

[Interactive Mechanism of Carbon Emission Efficiency and Emission Reduction Potential in Chinese Provincial Construction Industry].

As the second largest carbon emitter and a sector with significant potential for carbon reduction in China, the construction industry plays a pivotal role in achieving the country's "dual carbon" goals. This study adopts the non-discretionary output super-efficiency SBM model to evaluate the carbon emission efficiency (CEE) of China's construction industry from 2010 to 2021. From the dual perspective of "fairness-efficiency," a carbon reduction potential index is developed to quantify the carbon reduction potential (CRP) of China's construction industry during the same period.
