PURPOSE: A contact lens (CL) can act as a vector for microorganisms to adhere to and transfer to the ocular surface. Commensal microorganisms that uneventfully cohabitate on lid margins and conjunctivae and potential pathogens that are found transiently on the ocular surface can inoculate CLs in vivo. In the presence of reduced tissue resistance, these resident microorganisms or transient pathogens can invade and colonize the cornea or conjunctiva to produce inflammation or infection.
METHODS: The literature was reviewed and used to summarize the findings over the last 30 years on the identif

PURPOSE: Contact lens-associated solution toxicity manifests as generalized, mild punctate epithelial fluorescein staining and usually is widely reported as asymptomatic, with no substantial clinical sequelae. This study examined the relationship between solution toxicity and corneal infiltrative events (CIEs) in soft contact lens daily wear.
METHODS: Several nonrandomized interventional clinical trials conducted between May and November 2005 were analyzed retrospectively. Subjects wore commercially available soft contact lenses bilaterally, on a daily schedule, disinfected overnight using ma

This is a case report of a patient who developed IgE-mediated sensitization and subsequently ocular angioedema and conjunctivitis from papain contained in a commercial contact lens cleansing solution. Serum-specific IgE and positive cutaneous prick tests to papain and chymopapain were detected. When the lens solution containing papain was stopped, there was resolution of her allergic symptoms. Recognition of this route of papain-induced sensitization may be important in those patients undergoing chemonucleolysis with chymopapain who may be at greater risk to develop a systemic allergic reactio

Microbial contamination of contact lens solutions (CLS) can lead to eye infections, and traditional disinfectants often fail to eliminate resistant pathogens, underscoring the need for new disinfectants. We have studied the antimicrobial effects of femtosecond laser (FSL) irradiation and the combined effect of FSL irradiation and contact lens solutions (OPTI-FREE EXPRESS and CLIWEL) against common eye pathogens, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The INSPIRE HF100 laser system emits FSL generated by a mode-locked Ti: sapphire femtosecond MAI TAI HP for laser exposure (400 nm,

Currently, medical device eye irritation testing relies on the Draize eye test in rabbits, which presents significant challenges regarding animal welfare and variations across laboratories. This research explores the application of the commercially available three-dimensional reconstructed human corneal epithelial tissue (Skinovo-Ocular) in eye irritation evaluation. The model is developed by culturing immortalized human corneal epithelial cells at a liquid-air interface, resembling the morphology and induction of biological indicators found in human corneal tissue. We evaluated the eye irrita

INTRODUCTION: The use of contact lenses has progressively increased around the world, thereby increasing the risk of complications. The most serious complication is microbial keratitis (corneal infection) that can progress to a corneal ulcer.
METHODS: Fourteen multipurpose contact lens solutions were tested on mature biofilms comprising Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marcescens and Candida albicans, using the minimum disinfection times recommended by the manufacturers. The biofilm was induced in the lens case, and 24 h later, the solutions were added. Activity against

PURPOSE: Contact lens (CL) wear challenges the balance of the ocular surface environment by increasing water evaporation and tear osmolarity. Maintaining ocular surface homeostasis during CL wear remains a goal of lens manufacturers and an important consideration for eye care professionals. The purpose of this study was to measure the metabolic activity and inflammatory responses of a transformed human corneal epithelial cell (THCEpiC) line under hyperosmotic conditions in the presence of CL packaging solutions.
METHODS: CL packaging solutions sampled from seven daily disposable silicone hydr

Acanthamoeba spp. are amphizoic amoebae that are widely distributed in the environment and capable of entering the human body. They can cause pathogenic effects in different tissues and organs, including Acanthamoeba keratitis (AK), which may result in a loss of visual acuity and blindness. The diagnostics, treatment, and prevention of AK are still challenging. More than 90% of AK cases are related to the irresponsible wearing of contact lenses. However, even proper lens care does not sufficiently protect against this eye disease, as amoebae have been also found in contact lens solutions and c
