Community-engaged COVID-19 contact tracing initiative in Chicago.

INTRODUCTION: During the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) partnered with 31 community-based organizations (CBOs) to implement contact tracing to identify and manage potential COVID-19 infection cases in the city of Chicago. METHODS: To evaluate the performance of the COVID-19 contact tracing, we utilized data between September 16, 2020, and December 31, 2021. Contact tracers collected data through phone interviews with potentially affected individuals. The level of initiation, timeliness, and completion of the contact tracing process were exa

Accounting for contact tracing in epidemiological birth-death models.

Phylodynamics bridges the gap between classical epidemiology and pathogen genome sequence data by estimating epidemiological parameters from time-scaled pathogen phylogenetic trees. The models used in phylodynamics typically assume that the sampling procedure is independent between infected individuals. However, this assumption does not hold for many epidemics, in particular for such sexually transmitted infections as HIV-1, for which contact tracing schemes are included in health policies of many countries. We extended phylodynamic multi-type birth-death (MTBD) models with contact tracing (CT

Monitoring tuberculosis contact tracing outcomes in Western Sydney, Australia.

Treatment of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is an important component of strategies to achieve global tuberculosis (TB) elimination, but implementation is rarely monitored. This is a retrospective review of TB contact tracing outcomes at one of the busiest TB clinics in Australia, measured against the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention performance indicators. In total, 45 of 53 (85%) pulmonary TB cases had 171 close contacts, of whom 139 (81%) were evaluated with a tuberculin skin test (TST); 58 of 139 (42%) were positive at baseline. Among 57 close contacts of 16 sputum smear-pos

Infectious disease exposures and contact tracing in homeless shelters.

An outbreak among homeless shelter users of a communicable disease with a short generation time would pose serious public health challenges. Data from Toronto were used to examine the number of shelter residents potentially exposed in the event of such an outbreak. A shelter user had contact with a mean of 97 other residents (range, 1-292) in one day and a mean of 120 (range, 2-624) in eight days. After a single week, contact tracing becomes difficult due to the challenge of locating homeless people who have left the shelter system. Over an 8-day period, individuals who used more than one shel

Digital contact tracing technologies in epidemics: a rapid review.

BACKGROUND: Reducing the transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a global priority. Contact tracing identifies people who were recently in contact with an infected individual, in order to isolate them and reduce further transmission. Digital technology could be implemented to augment and accelerate manual contact tracing. Digital tools for contact tracing may be grouped into three areas: 1) outbreak response; 2) proximity tracing; and 3) symptom tracking. We conducted a rapid review on the effectiveness of digital solutions to contact tracing during infe

Limited benefit of CT scans in tuberculosis contact tracing.

OBJECTIVE: The detection of abnormal findings on computed tomography (CT) scans of tuberculosis contacts combined with normal plain radiographs contributes to the early detection of tuberculosis. However, the benefit of the early detection of abnormalities for the prevention of active tuberculosis during follow-up requires evaluation. METHOD: We conducted retrospective comparison of the existence of CT scans of tuberculosis contacts without findings of active tuberculosis on plain radiographs at a hospital in Japan. RESULTS: Among 243 contacts without CT scans, five developed tuberculosis du

Contact tracing for gonorrhoea in homosexual and heterosexual men.

We aimed to determine whether the success of partner notification for gonorrhoea in men was affected by sexual orientation. Analysis of standard clinic and health adviser records of all male patients found to be infected with gonorrhoea between October 1992 and September 1993 were carried out. Of the 278 cases of gonorrhoea in men, 9% (25) were acquired through homosexual intercourse and 91% (253) by heterosexual contact. Fifteen per cent (24) of Caucasians were homosexual but only 0.9% (1) of Afro-Caribbeans were. The mean number of contacts was 1.36 for homosexuals and 1.38 for heterosexuals

Increasing the number of contacts generated during contact tracing interviews.

To stem the spread of infectious diseases (e.g., Ebola), epidemiologists conduct contact tracing interviews (CTIs) with infected individuals regarding their contacts who may also be infected. These contact tracing interviews, however, may be vulnerable to deadly errors of omission. A promising technique to maximise recall is the Cognitive Interview (CI), which is grounded in psychological theory. In the present study, participants imagined they were infected with meningococcal meningitis and reported their contacts over the previous three days during either a control interview or a CI. To mode

Utilising digital contact tracing during a pandemic to measure contact trends by risk group.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring contact patterns is important for assessing impact of public-health-and-social-measures (PHSM) during a pandemic, but existing methods, such as contact surveys or mobility data, have limitations. While the COVID-19 pandemic provided impetus for population-wide adoption of digital-contact-tracing (DCT), prior studies that utilised DCT to evaluate contact patterns evaluated temporal variations, lacking granularity pertaining to impact in at-risk groups. METHODS: Population-wide DCT data was utilised to construct a cohort of SARS-CoV-2-infected community-dwelling adults (N

COVID-19 Contact Tracing in an Overseas U.S. Military Population.

The purpose of this study was to describe the early epidemiology and contact tracing challenges for Covid-19 infection in an overseas military and DoD population. From February 28, 2020 to April 27, 2020, patients who were diagnosed with Covid-19 infection completed a Centers for Disease Control Persons Under Investigation (PUI) form during their encounter with a medical provider. Positive results were forwarded to the Public Health Department. The results of the contact tracing and PUI form were entered into a database and analyzed. Eight Covid-19 cases were diagnosed in this overseas populat

Contact tracing strategies for infectious diseases: A systematic literature review.

Contact tracing has been a crucial public health strategy for breaking infectious diseases chains of transmission. Although many resources exist for disease outbreak management none address the rationale of contact tracing. This comprehensive review aims to evaluate contact tracing strategies, their effectiveness, and health systems governance across various diseases to inform a disease-agnostic contact tracing guideline. This systematic review was registered with PROSPERO (ID: CRD42023474507) and follows Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. D

Audit of syphilis treatment, follow-up and contact-tracing rates.

An audit of diagnoses of syphilis infection managed at the Edinburgh genitourinary (GU) medicine clinic for the period 1 October 2001-31 October 2004. In all, 101 patients were identified as untreated carriers or contacts requiring treatment, partner notification and follow-up. Treatment rate was 100% in the audit population. Among this patient group, 90% were offered testing for other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) with a positivity rate of 24%. The HIV testing rate was 85%, resulting in five new diagnoses.

The outcome of contact tracing for gonorrhoea in the United Kingdom.

Tracing and treating contacts (partner notification, PN) is a crucial part of the control of sexually transmitted infections but few studies have quantified its outcome. A retrospective national study obtained information from 155 clinics on 1308 patients with gonorrhoea, 59% of all UK patients attending in January to March 1995. These gave 1887 contacts (1:1.5) of whom 621 attended, 75% being found to be infected. The ratio of contacts attending to index patients was 0.5 (621/1260). The ratio was not influenced by gender or ethnicity, but was affected by orientation, being 0.5 for contacts of

Optimizing the order of actions in a model of contact tracing.

Contact tracing is a key tool for managing epidemic diseases like HIV, tuberculosis, COVID-19, and monkeypox. Manual investigations by human-contact tracers remain a dominant way in which this is carried out. This process is limited by the number of contact tracers available, who are often overburdened during an outbreak or epidemic. As a result, a crucial decision in any contact tracing strategy is, given a set of contacts, which person should a tracer trace next? In this work, we develop a formal model that articulates these questions and provides a framework for comparing contact tracing st

Identifying Impacts of Contact Tracing on Epidemiological Inference from Phylogenetic Data.

Robust sampling methods are foundational to inferences using phylogenies. Yet the impact of using contact tracing, a type of non-uniform sampling used in public health applications such as infectious disease outbreak investigations, has not been investigated in the molecular epidemiology field. To understand how contact tracing influences a recovered phylogeny, we developed a new simulation tool called SEEPS (Sequence Evolution and Epidemiological Process Simulator) that allows for the simulation of contact tracing and the resulting transmission tree, pathogen phylogeny, and corresponding viru

Exact calculation of end-of-outbreak probabilities using contact tracing data.

A key challenge for public health policymakers is determining when an infectious disease outbreak has finished. Following a period without cases, an estimate of the probability that no further cases will occur in future (the end-of-outbreak probability) can be used to inform whether or not to declare an outbreak over. An existing quantitative approach (the Nishiura method), based on a branching process transmission model, allows the end-of-outbreak probability to be approximated from disease incidence time series, the offspring distribution and the serial interval distribution. Here, we show h

Addressing contact tracing challenges-critical to halting Ebola virus disease transmission.

BACKGROUND: Delayed and ineffective contact tracing contributed to the extensive transmission of Ebola virus disease (EVD) in the 2014-2015 West African outbreak. Understanding and addressing the challenges to implementing and managing contact tracing is essential to stopping EVD transmission and preventing large-scale EVD outbreaks in the future. METHODS: Interviews were conducted with United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention staff members engaged in contact tracing activities in the affected West African countries of Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia, Senegal, Nigeria, and Mali

Case isolation and contact tracing can prevent the spread of smallpox.

Fears that terrorist groups may have gained access to variola virus have led to widespread discussions on how to prevent the reintroduction of smallpox by vaccination and on the availability of sufficiently large amounts of vaccine. In this paper, the author examines how the spread of smallpox is affected by isolating overt cases and taking their contacts under close surveillance for up to 3 weeks. The author assumes that case detection gradually improves from initially 7 days to 3 days. This intervention should be accompanied by vaccination, but its outcome does not depend on the vaccine's ef
