Contingent negative variation as an evaluation indicator of neurocognitive disorder after traumatic brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Neurocognitive disorders are commonly observed in patients suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods to assess neurocognitive disorders have thus drawn the general attention of the public, especially electrophysiology parameter such as contingent negative variation (CNV), which has been given more emphasis as a neurophysiological marker in event-related potentials (ERPs) for diagnosing a neurocognitive disorder and assessing its severity. The present study focused on the correlations between CNV parameters and levels of daily living activities and social function to ex

Olfactory evoked potentials and contingent negative variation simultaneously recorded for diagnosis of smell disorders.

Objective diagnosis of olfaction can be performed by registration of cortical olfactory evoked potentials (OEP) and of contingent negative variation (CNV). The CNV is a negative voltage developing at the vertex after discrimination of one of two smells while the patient is expecting a second stimulus. By an adequate procedure, including a long time window for averaging (2.56 seconds) with appropriate filters, the two tests can be performed simultaneously in a single session of less than 10 minutes. Anosmia is determinable by both OEP and CNV, although CNV shows less variability. On the other h

Effects of changes in carbon dioxide tension in abnormally prolonged contingent negative variation (CNV).

The effects of changes in pCO2 in the development and resolution of normal (return to base line within 2 sec after S2) and abnormal (return to base line in more than 2 sec after S2) CNVs were studied. Decreased pCO2 produced by hyperventilation induced a significant reduction in the duration of the post-imperative negative variation (PINV) without significantly affecting the amplitude of the CNV. Increased pCO2, by inhalation of 5% CO2, on the contrary, produced prolongation of the PINV in two subjects. Control subjects with normal CNVs did not show significant changes in the amplitude or in t

Contingent negative variation before and after hemodialysis among patients with end-stage renal disease.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes in contingent negative variation (CNV) induced by uremia and to study the effects of hemodialysis. METHODS: Fifteen right-handed healthy subjects and 12 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) were studied. CNV was recorded from the Fz, Cz and Pz (using the International 10-20 System) referenced to linked ear lobes, using an S1 (click)-S2 (flashes)-key press paradigm. The amplitude of initial CNV (iCNV) was calculated as the average amplitude at 550-750 ms after S1. The amplitude of late CNV (lCNV) was the mean amplitude of the last 200 ms before S2. Tes

Dissociation between contingent negative variation and Bereitschaftspotential in a patient with cerebellar efferent lesion.

Contingent negative variation (CNV) and Bereitschaftspotential (BP) were from the scalp in a patient with a discrete infarct in the mesial tegmentum of the midbrain involving the decussation of the superior cerebellar peduncle. Bereitschaftspotential in association with hand movements was completely absent while CNV was normally present at the frontocentral midline. This indicates that CNV is, as opposed to BP, generated without cerebro-cerebellar interactivation, suggesting different generating mechanisms.

Electrodermal lability and sensorimotor preparation: effects on reaction time, contingent negative variation, and heart rate.

Electrodermal lability is a trait-like measure of spontaneous sympathetic resting activity. In the present study, we addressed whether interindividual differences in this lability have an impact on the reaction time (RT) and on two physiological indicators of a goal-oriented sensorimotor preparation in a long-running, forewarned RT task (S1-S2 paradigm). The two indicators were the brain's contingent negative variation (CNV) and a heart rate deceleration (HRD). The interindividual differences were determined by counting spontaneous skin conductance fluctuations during a 5-min resting phase and

[Olfactory evoked potentials and contingent negative variation in expert assessment of disordered sense of smell].

Normally, the sense of smell is assessed by means of traditional subjective tests (sniff test, gustatory smell test, and trigeminus test). When results are inconclusive, an objective smell test is indicated. Simultaneously registering olfactory evoked potentials (OEP) and contingent negative variation (CNV) permits evaluation of both odor perception and odor discrimination. We can even objectively assess the false olfactory sensations in parosmia patients who are unable to discriminate between different odors. In this study, the results of 59 patients with olfactory disorders are presented. He

Amplitude modulation of the contingent negative variation in psychopathy: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

The CNV is analyzed in tasks related to EEG studies, often with participants presenting psychopathic personality traits. A systematic search of the literature was conducted, to solve some inconsistencies regarding CNV amplitude modulation by psychopathy. Nine studies (N = 317) were retrieved for analysis. Three meta-analyses were run - CNV, iCNV, tCNV. A qualitative analysis - reporting CNV amplitudes modulated by psychopathy dimensional features - was also featured. Overall effects for CNV and iCNV were not significant. Larger tCNV amplitudes were found in participants reporting higher psycho

The contingent negative variation laterality and dynamics in antisaccade task in normal and unmedicated schizophrenic subjects.

Contingent negative variation (CNV) topography, hemispheric asymmetry and time-course were investigated in healthy subjects and non-medicated paranoid schizophrenic patients in two antisaccade paradigms with the short (800-1000 ms) and long (1200-1400 ms) durations of the fixation period. EEG and electrooculogram (EOG) were recorded. Saccade characteristics and mean amplitudes of slow cortical potentials time-locked to peripheral target were analyzed in 23 healthy volunteers and 19 schizophrenic patients. Compared to healthy control subjects, schizophrenic patients had significantly slower ant

The Study of the Antisaccade Performance and Contingent Negative Variation Characteristics in First-Episode and Chronic Schizophrenia Patients.

The study tested whether the antisaccade (AS) performance and Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) measures differed between the first-episode and chronic patients to provide the evidence of PFC progressive functional deterioration. Subjects included 15 first-episode and 20 chronic schizophrenic patients (with the duration of illness more than 5 years), and 21 control subjects. The first-episode and chronic patients had significantly elevated error percent (p < .05, effect size 1.10 and p < .001, effect size 1.25), increased AS latencies (p < .01, effect size 1.18 and p < .001, effect size 1.69

Deficit in late-stage contingent negative variation provides evidence for disrupted movement preparation in patients with conversion paresis.

Conversion paresis is the presence of unexplained weakness without detectable neuropathology that is not feigned. To examine the 'abnormal preparation' and 'disrupted execution' hypotheses proposed to explain the movement deficits in conversion paresis, electroencephalographic, electromyographic and kinematic measures were recorded during motor preparation and execution. Six patients with unilateral upper limb conversion weakness, 24 participants feigning weakness and 12 control participants performed a 2-choice precued reaction time task. Precues provided advance information about the respond

Effects of experimentally induced low back pain on the sit-to-stand movement and electroencephalographic contingent negative variation.

It is becoming increasingly evident that people with chronic, recurrent low back pain (LBP) exhibit changes in cerebrocortical activity that associate with altered postural coordination, suggesting a need for a better understanding of how the experience of LBP alters postural coordination and cerebrocortical activity. To characterize changes in postural coordination and pre-movement cerebrocortical activity related to the experience of acutely induced LBP, 14 healthy participants with no history of LBP performed sit-to-stand movements in 3 sequential conditions: (1) without experimentally indu

Neurophysiological study of 47, XYY and 47, XXY psychopaths: contingent negative variation, evoked potentials and motor nerve conduction.

Neurophysiological investigations-including sensory-evoked responses, contingent negative variation (CNV), and nerve conduction velocities-were done in 11 male polygonosomic patients and in comparison with a control group. Some significant data are reported pointing out differences which may be related to a hypovigil type (47, XYY) and a hypervigil type (47, XXY). The importance of the CNV and conduction velocity as an index of a constitutional minimal brain dysfunction is discussed.

Stereotyped topography of different elevated contingent negative variation components in children with migraine without aura points towards a subcortical dysfunction.

Increased negativity during contingent negative variation (CNV) is thought to reflect abnormal neural activation in adult migraineurs' attention related processing. Findings in childhood and adolescence have yielded less clear results. This study characterizes the age-dependent development of CNV topography in migraine during childhood in order to elucidate the origin and cerebral generators of described CNV elevations. A large sample of children with primary headache (migraine with/without aura, tension type headache) and healthy controls aged 6-18 years was examined in a CNV paradigm using 6

Dissociation between motor potential and contingent negative variation after lesions of some basal ganglia in man: electrophysiological study of torticollis.

Studied slow cortical potentials associated with voluntary movements ("readiness potential", RP and "motor potential", MP) and discrimination tasks (contingent negative variation", CNV, "expectancy wave", EW) in 11 normal subjects and 11 patients with torticollis (every person going through 2 experimental sessions). The following was found: 1. In torticollis-patients, the RP appeared as a complex, irregular wave with low--voltage, ataxic course. 2. The mean amplitude of the RP was significantly lower in the torticollis-group than in the control group. 3. The mean amplitude of the late positive

Pre-motor deficits in left spatial neglect: An EEG study on Contingent Negative Variation (CNV) and response-related beta oscillatory activity.

Right Brain Damaged patients with left spatial neglect (N+), are characterised by poor allocation of attention in the contralesional left side of space. In a recent study (Lasaponara et al., 2018) we showed during orienting of spatial attention with endogenous central cues, both the EEG markers reflecting the early phases of orienting (Early Directing Attention Negativity) and those reflecting the late setting-up of sensory facilitation in the visual cortex (Late Directing Attention Positivity) are disturbed in N+ when these patients attend the left side of space. In the healthy brain, endogen

Social dominance and moral decision-making: An investigation of cognitive and emotional processing as indicated by contingent negative variation and late positive potential.

Social dominance has long been assumed to bias moral cognition, yet its neuro-temporal signatures remain poorly defined. To clarify this link, we contrasted behavioral and electrophysiological responses in participants classified into high- and low-dominance groups while they evaluated moral dilemmas (22 personal, 17 impersonal, and 12 neutral scenarios) during EEG recording. Our results showed that scenario types, rather than dominance status, shaped behavioral results. Both personal and impersonal moral dilemmas generated significantly shorter reaction times than neutral scenarios, and utili
