Temporal bone (TB) fractures are frequently accompanied by intracranial injury. This study aimed to analyze combined intracranial injuries in relation to functional changes in the inner ear, including those of the contralateral ear, in patients with TB fractures. Ninety-four patients (mean age: 35.6 ± 18.7 years, M : F=67 : 27) diagnosed with unilateral TB fracture were included. Bone conduction (BC) threshold, word recognition score (WRS), and changes in vestibular function were compared based on intracranial injuries, focusing on the contralateral side. Various types of intracranial injuries

There are 3 translations of the Edwin Smith Papyrus: Breasted's (1930), Allen's (2005), and Sanchez and Meltzer's (2012). Case 8 is similarly presented in all 3 translations, although with increasing detail in the later works. The patient in Case 8 had a comminuted skull fracture under intact skin. There were palpable pulsations at the fracture site. There was deviation of the eye on the side of the injury and an ipsilateral spastic hemiparesis in an ambulant patient with bleeding from the nose and ear. Explanations of the paralysis have included a contrecoup lesion and compression of the cont

OBJECT: To date, there has been no published study in which the focus was on the mechanisms of head injuries associated with snowboarding. The purpose of this study was to identify these mechanisms.
METHODS: The patient population consisted of 38 consecutive patients with snowboarding-related major head injuries who were treated at two hospitals in Japan, where for years many winter sports injuries have been treated. The skill level of the snowboarder, the cause of the accident, the direction of the fall, the site of impact to the head, and the condition of the ski slope were examined. The in

Extradural hematoma (EDH) generally occurs in the site of impact, that is, coup injury site. EDH is associated with fracture of skull in many a times due to direct impact. However, EDH in counter coup site is a rare occurrence. Hardly, yet, 12 cases have been reported including this case. Here, we reported a case of a 22-year-old male of contrecoup acute EDH who had sustained head injury due to fall from bike. Physical examination revealed direct impact at the left occipito-parietal region with laceration of scalp and bruise with transient loss of consciousness at the time of injury. There was

The retrospective study was performed of all deceased car-occupants in frontal car collisions in order to identify persons with facial-bone fractures. The sample consisted of 482 cases: 378 males and 104 females, average age of 39.59+/-16.01 years. There were 239 car-drivers, 194 front-seat passengers, and 49 rear-seat passengers. In 46 of 482 cases, single fracture of upper facial bones was established: nasal fractures were the most common, followed by zygomatic. In 118 of 482 cases, fracture of upper facial bones was established, as well as 70 cases of jawbone. The fractured facial bones eit

Ophthalmic complications are rare following maxillary osteotomies. Potential complications include a decrease in visual acuity, extraocular muscle dysfunction, neuroparalytic keratitis, and nasolacrimal problems involving both an increase or a decrease in tearing. Ophthalmic injuries appear to be primarily mediated through indirect injuries to neurovascular structures occurring from traction, compression, or contrecoup injuries from forces transmitted during the pterygomaxillary dysjunction using an osteotome or from fractures extending to the base of the skull or orbit associated with the pte

Volar plate injuries are typically caused by hyperextension of the proximal interphalangeal joint. These injuries are usually seen in sports where the ball comes in direct contact with the hands. Forceful dorsiflexion of the finger caused by the speeding ball leads to volar plate avulsion. In cricket, such finger injuries predominantly occur in fielders trying to catch or stop the speeding ball with bare hands. We report two unusual cases of volar plate avulsion injury occurring in batsmen that occurred during 'gully cricket' (street-cricket). We propose the possibility of a novel contrecoup-t

We report 3 cases of blunt trauma causing rupture of the anterior lens capsule with cataract formation. The injuries were caused by a paintball gun, a ball-bearing air pistol, and an aluminum rivet. In all 3 cases, the anterior capsule tears were central and the posterior capsules and zonules intact; uneventful cataract extraction with implantation of an intraocular lens was performed. The postoperative visual acuities was 20/40 in 1 case and 20/20 in the other 2 cases. We propose that the anterior lens capsule may have been torn by direct contusion from rapid focal indentation of the cornea o

BACKGROUND: Optic disc swelling is a rare sequela of blunt ocular trauma.
METHODS: The authors examined three young patients who had an unusual post-traumatic optic neuropathy in which protracted swelling of the optic nerve head was the salient clinical feature.
RESULTS: Associated choroidal ruptures in two patients suggested a contrecoup mechanism of injury to the optic nerve at its junction with the globe. All patients had partial recovery of vision over months, concurrent with resolution of the nerve head swelling and development of optic disc pallor.
CONCLUSION: Despite its protracted c

Accumulating clinical and experimental studies continue to elucidate and further define the significance of intra- and extra-cranial factors which determine outcome of traumatic brain injury. These factors include severity of injury, age of the patient, presence or absence of premorbid brain insults, and associated pathophysiological events such as anoxia, respiratory arrest, hemorrage, edema, contrecoup and Wallerian degeneration. Following resolution of acute temporary symptoms, delayed complications include seizures, neurotic and psychotic disorders, earlier onset of stroke, earlier senesce

Although morbidity and fatalities related to nonpenetrating kinetic impact projectiles (KIPs), including rubber bullets and sponge rounds, have been reported, fatal traumatic brain injury resulting from these projectiles remains uncommon. A 38-year-old incarcerated male sustained a nonpenetrating sponge round impact to the frontotemporal region of the head during an altercation. The impact resulted in severe traumatic brain injury with traumatic axonal injury, ultimately resulting in death. Autopsy findings included subdural and subarachnoid hemorrhage, coup and contrecoup cortical contusions,

Isolated paralysis of one or both superior oblique muscles in a consecutive series of 43 patients was found to occur most often by indirect injury to the skull. The etiology in the group of spontaneous cases was mostly vascular. With rare exceptions the latter recovered spontaneously. Those with traumatic palsy may be due to "contrecoup" trauma at the decussation of the nerves or by decompensation of the cerebral fusional mechanism, with dissociation of the images of the two eyes and subsequent vertical deviation. The traumatic cases never recover spontaneously and recession or myectomy of the

The intracranial artery dissection (IAD) is an uncommon but life-threatening disease. The IAD would develop a significant cerebral infarction due to unrecognized contrecoup brain injury. We report a 53-year-old man fell to develop blunt cerebrovascular injuries (BCVIs) more than 2 months ago. During his rehabilitation, he often had a transient left headache and underwent short-term right limb weakness twice, but he did not care. He was hospitalized again because of suffering right limb weakness for more than 4 h. The brain computed tomography angiography (CTA) showed subtotal occlusion of the

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is among the leading causes of death and disability all over the globe. TBI is also commonly associated with clinical sequelae of posttraumatic depression, and reports of other subsequent affective distress are common. Similarly, posttraumatic changes in chemoreceptive sensory functions, primarily due to coup-contrecoup injury induced shearing of the olfactory nerve fibers, leading to anosmia and ageusia are also well documented in the literature. However, the current literature is limited in addressing the intersections between said variables. The aim of this stud

AIM: To investigate the feasibility of noncontrast computed tomography (NcCT) and perfusion CT (PCT) in the assessment of head deceleration injury (HDI).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A small animal HDI device was developed. A total of 20 healthy adult rabbits with frontal impacts resulting from a 3.5 m drop were included in this study. All subjects underwent NcCT and PCT scans 12 hours before injury and three to four hours after head injury. Brain injuries were evaluated by traditional macroscopic and microscopic examination after CT scans.
RESULTS: Microscopic examination revealed hemorrhagic cere

BACKGROUND: The incidence of acute epidural hematoma not accompanied by fracture is low, and it mostly occurs right below the impact point in children. Acute epidural hematoma on the contralateral side of the impact point without fracture is very rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1: a 52-year-old Japanese woman fell and was bruised in the left occipital region, and acute epidural hematoma developed in the right frontal region. No fracture line was observed in the right frontal region on head computed tomography or during surgery, and the source of bleeding was the middle meningeal artery. Case 2:

Traumatic cerebellar hemorrhagic contusions are infrequent, and the pathogenic mechanism involves a coup injury that is associated with motor vehicle accidents in most cases. Traumatic basal subarachnoid hemorrhage (TBSAH) is commonly reported after blunt trauma to the neck or unrestricted movement of the head, and the source of the hemorrhage is most frequently identified in the vertebrobasilar arteries. A 55-year-old woman who was addicted to alcohol was found dead in her bed. She had a bruise on the left side of her posterior parietal region, and autopsy revealed massive subarachnoid hemorr

We report a craniocerebral trauma case in which a man sustained severe skull fractures and cerebral contusions and it demanded elucidating the injury mechanism of being formed by strike or tumble. However, the initial features of skull fractures were mostly lost when the forensic pathologists involved in the case 5 months later because of injury healing and craniocerebral surgery. Therefore, we aimed to reconstruct the original skull fracture features by utilizing the digital reconstruction technologies in terms of CT (computed tomography) scanning, 3D (3-dimentional) reconstruction, and virtu

President Abraham Abraham Lincoln's assassination in April 1865 remains one of the most scrutinized cases in forensic history. We re-examined his fatal head wound through the lens of modern neurosurgery, focusing on projectile trajectory, biomechanics, skull base anatomy, fluid percussion, and periorbital injury, and including the use of artificial intelligence search. A systematic review was conducted using PubMed (n = 19) and Scopus (n = 12), along with 5 additional sources available on the Internet. Following PRISMA guidelines, 3 original studies were included.
