Evolution of multiple resistance under long-term herbicide exposure reshapes Mediterranean perennial agroecosystems.

Decades of intensive herbicide use in perennial cropping systems have imposed substantial environmental pressures and accelerated the evolution of herbicide-resistant weed populations. In Andalusia (southern Spain), citrus and olive orchards rely heavily on glyphosate and other herbicide modes of action, resulting in chronic ecosystem exposure, declining herbicide efficacy, and increasing chemical inputs. We surveyed ten dominant weed species across eleven orchards to characterize resistance patterns and investigate underlying physiological mechanisms relevant to environmental persistence and

Evaluation of anti-inflammatory activity of essential oils from two Asteraceae species.

The essential oils from two Asteraceae species, Porophyllum ruderale (PR) and Conyza bonariensis (CB) were screened for anti-inflammatory activity in the mouse model of pleurisy induced by zymosan (500 microg/cavity) and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (250 ng/cavity). The main monoterpene constituents of each oil, beta-myrcene (in PR) and limonene (in CB), were tested in the LPS-induced pleurisy model and assayed also for immunoregulatory activity by measurement of the inhibition of NO and production of the cytokines, gamma-interferon and IL-4. The oils, when administered orally, were able to inhibi

Synthesis of Tyrosol 1,2,3-Triazole Derivatives and Their Phytotoxic Activity against Euphorbia heterophylla.

The synthesis and phytotoxic activity of a series of tyrosol 1,2,3-triazole derivatives are reported herein. Target compounds were synthesized through the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction (CuAAC), known as click reaction, and these were tested for phytotoxic activity on leaves of wild poinsettia (Euphorbia heterophylla), fleabane (Conyza sumatrensis), and tropical spiderwort (Commelina benghalensis). These are three highly noxious agricultural weeds that challenge available weed control methods, including the use of chemical herbicides. Twenty-five compounds were synthes

Mandibular mechanical properties and material composition in a generalist pest insect feeding on different host plants.

Adaptations of insect mouthparts to host plants play a key role in species distribution and evolutionary trajectories. We investigated the larval mandibles of the generalist lepidopteran Spodoptera frugiperda, focusing on material composition and mechanical properties in response to different larval food resources. Nanoindentation revealed pronounced functional differentiation within each mandible: the cutting edge exhibited the highest hardness and stiffness values, while basal regions were softer and more flexible, indicating adaptive gradients that balance wear resistance with shock absorpt

Phytotoxicity mechanism of rubratoxin B from the soil-derived fungus, Talaromyces purpureogenus XJ14C02.

BACKGROUND: Chemical herbicides are essential for crop productivity, but increasing resistance demands new modes of action. Microbial metabolites offer a promising source of novel phytotoxins. Here, we elucidate the herbicidal mechanism of rubratoxin B (RB), a mycotoxin produced by Talaromyces purpureogenus XJ14C02 strain isolated from soil in Xinjiang, China. RESULTS: RB exhibited potent root growth inhibition against Echinochloa crus-galli, Conyza canadensis, and Arabidopsis thaliana (IC₅₀ = 14.70, 9.45, and 0.21 μg mL-1, respectively). Integrated multi-omics profiling identified 2373 diffe

Design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of oxime ether derivatives containing 1,5-dimethyl-6-thioxo-1,3,5-triazinane-2,4-dione as protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase inhibitors.

BACKGROUND: Herbicides based on protoporphyrinogen IX oxidase (PPO; EC 1.3.3.4) are widely used for weeding control in agricultural fields to safeguard food security. PPO herbicides, because of their low dosage, rapid action on weeds, slow accumulation in the environment and low toxicity to mammals, have become an important field of research in the development of new herbicides. This study presents a novel molecular scaffold with remarkably potent herbicidal activity. RESULTS: A series of novel oxime ether derivatives containing 1,5-dimethyl-6-thioxo-1,3,5-triazinane-2,4-dione 6a-6z were desi
