Euryphorus brachypterus (Copepoda: Caligidae) on wild pacific bluefin tuna from the Tsugaru Strait, northern Japan.

Parasitic copepods infecting large scombrid fishes have been known for a long time because their hosts are economically important. Most studies, however, have focused on their morphology or their infection status in aquaculture from pathological viewpoints, and very few quantitative surveys have been conducted under conditions in the wild. This study therefore investigated the prevalence of Euryphorus brachypterus (Caligidae) in wild Pacific bluefin tuna (PBF). Results of sampling from August to September 2014 at the western area of the Tsugaru Strait, Japan showed that 13.2% of the PBF indivi

A new genus and species of oceanic planktonic Tisbidae (Crustacea, Copepoda, Harpacticoida) with enlarged modified eyes.

Both sexes of a new monotypic genus of Tisbidae (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) are described from the epi- or mesopelagic zone in the Kuroshio region, Japan. Gyoromeguttatumgen. et sp. nov. belongs to a monophyletic lineage of deepwater holoplanktonic genera defined by a suite of characters. Within this clade, Gyoromegen. nov. appears most closely related to Neotisbella Boxshall, 1979. The most distinguishable feature of G.guttatumgen. et sp. nov. is the presence of large, paired, frontal modified eyes, each consisting of a baculiform ocellus, a globular (Gicklhorn's?) organ, and a semi-parabolic p

The reproductive effort of Lepeophtheirus pectoralis (Copepoda: Caligidae): insights into the egg production strategy of parasitic copepods.

The reproductive effort of Lepeophtheirus pectoralis (Müller O. F., 1776), a caligid copepod, which is commonly found infecting the European flounder, Platichthys flesus (Linnaeus, 1758), is studied in detail for the first time. Seasonal variation in body dimensions and reproductive effort are analysed. Data for 120 ovigerous females, 30 from each season of the year, were considered in the analyses. Females were larger and produced a larger number of smaller eggs in winter, than during the summer. The relationship between egg number and egg size is similar to that recorded for other copepods e

High-throughput SNP discovery and transcriptome expression profiles from the salmon louse Caligus rogercresseyi (Copepoda: Caligidae).

The salmon louse Caligus rogercresseyi is the dominant ectoparasite species affecting the salmon aquaculture industry in the Southern hemisphere, and it is currently the main cause for economic losses in Chilean aquaculture. However, despite the great concern over Caligus infestations, genomic information on this louse is still scarce, even while the need to develop high-resolution molecular markers is growing. This study provides the first deep transcriptome survey to identify thousands of SNP markers from C. rogercresseyi, with a total of 69,466 SNPs identified using the MiSeq platform (Illu

Caligus sclerotinosus (Copepoda: Caligidae), a serious pest of cultured red seabream Pagrus major (Sparidae) in Korea.

Caligid copepods (Crustacea) known as sea lice are pests of cultured fish, causing serious diseases and economic losses in fish aquaculture worldwide. One species, Caligus sclerotinosus Roubal, Armitage & Rohde, 1983 (Caligidae), is considered a serious pest of the highly prized red seabream Pagrus major (Temminck and Schlegel, 1843) (Sparidae) cultured in Japan. Recently, in neighboring Korea, red seabream culture has intensified and almost replaced yellow tail culture. However, until now, there have been no reports on infection of this sea louse from red seabream in Korea. We surveyed 120 (2

Characterization of two species of Lepeophtheirus (Copepoda, Caligidae) from flatfishes. Description of Lepeophtheirus europaensis sp. nov.

In the eastern Mediterranean, the copepod Lepeophtheirus thompsoni Baird, 1850, has been reported to infest turbot, brill and flounder. By combining several methods, including enzyme electrophoresis, we show that this species is found only in turbot. By contrast, brill and flounder are infested by a species of Lepeophtheirus that corresponds to no other species reported in the literature. We propose that the species be designated as L. europaensis and we describe the characteristics of the gravid female. This study was extended to the Atlantic populations of flatfishes and includes an investig

The cephalothoracic sucker of sea lice (Crustacea: Copepoda: Caligidae): The functional importance of cuticular membrane ultrastructure.

Sea lice adhere to the body surface of host fish with a cephalothoracic sucker. Caligus adheres to this substrate using legs 2 and 3, and the action of cephalothoracic muscles. Lunules, small, paired, anterior sucker-like structures, have a vital function in the initial step of adhering and contain a unique endocuticule containing elements that may behave like active matter and serve as the actuating mechanism. Cuticular membranes bordering the cephalothorax have a unique endocuticule with an undulating dorsal surface and a smooth ventral surface. A high-speed camera revealed that this undulat

A review of the population biology and host-parasite interactions of the sea louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepoda: Caligidae).

Lepeophtheirus salmonis is a specific parasite of salmonids that occurs in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. When infestations are heavy fish mortality can occur although the factors that are responsible for causing epizootics, especially in wild salmonid populations are still largely unknown. Over the past 20 years this parasite has caused significant economic losses in farmed salmon production and possibly in wild salmonid populations locally. Understanding the connectivity between populations is crucial to an understanding of the epidemiology of infections and for management of infections in

Integrated assessment: Chemical characterisation and response of Tisbe biminiensis (Copepoda, Harpacticoida) to toxins from cigarette butts.

The study evaluated lethal, developmental, reproductive and behavioural effects of cigarette butt leachates on the marine copepod Tisbe biminiensisVolkmann-Rocco, 1973. Three experiments were conducted using leachates prepared from cigarette butts collected on beaches: (1) different leachate concentrations (6.25%, 12.5%, 25%, 50% and 100%), (2) four degradation levels (Types I-IV) and (3) four cigarette brands (A-D), in addition to an uncontaminated control. Each treatment comprised five replicates with ten ovigerous females per replicate and lasted 7 days under controlled conditions. Nauplii

Genomic Architecture of Hybrid Male Sterility in a Species Without Sex Chromosomes (Tigriopus californicus, Copepoda: Harpacticoida).

Sterility among hybrids is one of the most prevalent forms of reproductive isolation delineating species boundaries and is expressed disproportionately in heterogametic XY males. While hybrid male sterility (HMS) due to the "large X effect" is a well-recognized mechanism of reproductive isolation, it is less clear how HMS manifests in species that lack heteromorphic sex chromosomes. We evaluated differences in allele frequencies at approximately 460,000 SNPs between fertile and sterile F2 interpopulation male hybrids to characterize the genomic architecture of HMS in a species without sex chro

Argentinochondria patagonensis n. gen., n. sp. (Copepoda: Chondracanthidae) parasitic on Genypterus brasiliensis (Pisces: Ophidiidae) from Patagonia, Argentina.

Argentinochondria patagonensis n. gen., n. sp. (Copepoda: Chondracanthidae) is described from adult specimens recovered from the smooth kingklip Genypterus brasiliensis Reagan, 1903, from San Jorge Gulf, Patagonia, Argentina. The new genus is placed in the Chondracanthinae. Females of the new genus differ from other members of this subfamily in having 2 pairs of modified legs, a bulbose head, a long neck region, and a trunk devoid of processes. Males have usual chondracanthid form, oral appendages as in female, except a longer paragnath, fewer teeth on maxilla, and 2 pairs of reduced legs.

Morphological analysis of Caligus elongatus von Nordmann, 1832 (Copepoda: Caligidae) from the rosy goatfish Parupeneus rubescens (Mullidae).

Copepods are a common component of ectoparasite assemblages of all kinds of fish, from all environments and ecosystems. In the present investigation, a total of 80 specimens of the rosy goatfish Parupeneus rubescens were randomly collected from the Arabian Gulf, and then transported to the laboratory in order to be dissected and examined for the presence of copepodid infections. Copepod parasites were recovered from the gills of the infected fish. One copepod species within the Caligidae family was identified and labeled as Caligus elongates von Nordmann, 1832. This copepod species examined us

On recognizing Paracalanus indicus Wolfenden, 1906 from P. tropicus Andronov, 1977 (Copepoda, Calanoida, Paracalanidae) off the Iranian coast.

In the present study, we re-evaluated the presence of a row of denticles on the posterior margin of the genital double-somite as one of the morphological diagnostic characters used to distinguish Paracalanus indicus Wolfenden, 1906, from P. tropicus Andronov, 1977. The results demonstrated that these denticles are present in both dorsal and lateral margins in these two species. Consequently, the previously reported absence of denticles from the dorsal surface of P. indicus can no longer be regarded as a reliable diagnostic character to separate Paracalanus indicus from P. tropicus. The caligid life cycle: new evidence from Lepeophtheirus elegans reconciles the cycles of Caligus and Lepeophtheirus (Copepoda: Caligidae).

The developmental stages of the sea louse Lepeophtheirus elegans (Copepoda: Caligidae) are described from material collected from marine ranched Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegelii. In L. elegans, setal number on the proximal segment of the antennule increases from 3 in the copepodid to 27 in the adult. Using the number of setae as a stage marker supports the inference that the post-naupliar phase of the life cycle comprises six stages: copepodid, chalimus I, chalimus II, pre-adult I, pre-adult II, and the adult. We observed variation in body length in both of the chalimus stages which we con
