Journal of autism and developmental disorders2018eng
Data from the Autism Inpatient Collection was used to examine the relationship between problem behaviors and verbal ability, which have generally, though not universally, been highly associated. In a comparison of 169 minimally-verbal and 177 fluently-verbal 4 to 20-year-old psychiatric inpatients with ASD, the severity of self-injurious behavior, stereotyped behavior, and irritability (including aggression and tantrums) did not significantly differ, when controlling for age and NVIQ. Verbal ability was not strongly related to the severity of problem behaviors. However, lower adapting/coping s

BACKGROUND: Surveying vulnerable and incarcerated populations is often challenging. Newer methods to reach and collect sensitive information in a safe, secure, and valid manner can go a long way in addressing this unmet need. Homosexual men in India live with inadequate social support, marginalization, and lack legal recognition. These make them less reachable by public health agencies, and make them more likely to continue with high-risk behaviors, and contract human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
AIMS: To understand coping skills and HIV testing patterns of homosexual men versus heterosexual

Coping effectively with affective distress is a critical developmental task expected to support affective health over the lifespan, with parents likely shaping coping skill development. Yet, naturalistic variation in coping skill development is poorly understood and it remains unclear whether: (1) gender-specific and parental support enrich coping skill development and (2) differences in naturalistic coping skill trajectories differentiate psychopathology outcomes thereafter. Using longitudinal data from a large, nationally-representative U.S. adolescent study (n = 831), the current study appl

Individuals living with a pathological-gambling partner can experience significant psychological distress. In this report, we conduct a preliminary evaluation of a coping skills training program (CST) for this population. Twenty-three individuals experiencing stress from living with a pathological-gambling partner who was not in treatment were randomly assigned to either CST or a delayed treatment control (DTC) condition. CST consisted of ten, weekly individual sessions to teach more effective coping skills. At the end of the treatment/delay period, CST participants, relative to those in DTC,

The aim of the present study was to find relevant coping factors for the development of psychological intervention programs for young people with Type 1 (T1) diabetes. A wide range of coping techniques was studied, including cognitive coping, behavioral coping and goal adjustment coping. A total of 78 young people with T1 diabetes participated. They were contacted through a social networking website, several Internet sites, and flyers. A wide range of coping techniques appeared to be related to depressive symptoms. Especially the cognitive coping strategies self-blame, rumination, refocus posi

Sport performance results from the interaction of tactical, technical, physiological and psychological factors, but psychological aspects are often minimized or analyzed in a decontextualized manner. This exploratory pilot study aimed to contribute to the development of a diagnostic framework that links individual behaviors during football attack-defense transition moments (ADT) with psychological attributes. Twenty male U14 players were assessed across five official matches regarding their ADT performance indicators. The Athletic Coping Skills Inventory (ACSI-28) and the Resilience Scale (RS)

Although cognitive-behavioral treatments for panic disorder have demonstrated efficacy, a considerable number of patients terminate treatment prematurely or remain symtpomatic. Cognitive and biobehavioral coping skills are taught to improve exposure therapy outcomes but evidence for an additive effect is largely lacking. Current methodologies used to study the augmenting effects of coping skills test the degree to which the delivery of coping skills enhances outcomes. However, they do not assess the degree to which acquisition of coping skills and their application during exposure therapy augm

The purpose of this project was to develop a short-term, theory-based intervention for patients with self-reported limited self-efficacy to perform coping behaviors. Cancer patients with low coping self-efficacy were randomly assigned to a treatment (N = 66) or control condition (N = 68). The treatment, Mastery Enhancement Therapy, was based on self-regulation and self-efficacy theories. Measures of coping self-efficacy, functional status, depression, quality of life, and adjustment were administered at baseline, after session two, after the final (fourth) session, and at 3 months post-treatme

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether a 12-week physical therapist-delivered combined pain coping skills training (PCST) and exercise (PCST/exercise) is more efficacious and cost effective than either treatment alone for knee osteoarthritis (OA).
METHODS: This was an assessor-blinded, 3-arm randomized controlled trial in 222 people (73 PCST/exercise, 75 exercise, and 74 PCST) ages ≥50 years with knee OA. All participants received 10 treatments over 12 weeks plus a home program. PCST covered pain education and training in cognitive and behavioral pain coping skills, exercise comprised strengthenin

OBJECTIVE: While parents of children with cancer experience increased levels of emotional distress, considerable variability in adjustment and distress is evident. The current study aimed to examine the feasibility, acceptability, and satisfaction of a semi-structured intervention protocol based on a three-factor theoretical model of coping and distress using a single-arm study design. The intervention focused on reducing the use of avoidance-focused coping techniques, expanding the repertoire of problem-, and emotion-focused coping techniques, and increasing flexibility in applying these tech

BACKGROUND: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) refers to significant clinical physical and psychological manifestations during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, leading to significant distress and impaired functional capacity. Given the side effects caused by pharmacotherapy, it seems logical to use non-pharmacological methods that can reduce symptoms such as menstrual stress. Thus, this study has been conducted to compare the effect of teaching coping skills and acupressure on premenstrual stress in undergraduate students of the Medical School of Azad University of Sanandaj-Iran.

BACKGROUND: Coping skills play a vital role in managing stress and adversity, influencing psychological well-being, particularly among university students. Students of psychology are expected to possess better coping mechanisms due to their academic training. This study aimed to assess the level of coping skills among psychology and non-psychology students and to examine the association of coping skills with selected demographic variables.
METHODS: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted among 271 undergraduate and graduate students (126 psychology and 145 non-psychology) from selec

INTRODUCTION: The present study aims to investigate whether problem-focused and emotion-focused coping skills were associated with suicidal ideation. In addition, we examined whether childhood maltreatment (i.e. physical, psychological, sexual abuse, and neglect) is a risk factor for later-on suicidal ideation.
METHODS: Youths aged 16 or 18 (n = 307, 56% females) from San Diego and Seattle at Wave 6 and Wave 7 of the LONGSCAN were included in the study. We used hierarchical logistic regression.
RESULTS & CONCLUSIONS: 17.6% reported suicidal ideation. Those who reported better emotion-focused

BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding alcohol use and its correlates in women veterans. An understanding of these variables is of utility to providers in primary care at Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals, who are among the first to identify and intervene for problem drinking.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to describe and explore the associations between posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms, experience of military sexual trauma (MST), expectancies for alcohol use, and coping skills in predicting drinking behavior.
DESIGN: Each month all women veterans attending appointments in pr
