Comparison of the toxicity of two chelated copper algaecides and copper sulfate to non-target fish.

New pesticide products are reviewed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency for possible effects to non-target aquatic organisms. The required toxicity data are for the active ingredient only, and fail to include toxicity of the mixture of other ingredients found in these pesticides. These ingredients may increase the toxicity of the active ingredient to non-target organisms. Our study compares the toxicity of two formulations of chelated copper algaecides with each other, and to a copper sulfate algaecide. We were particularly interested in the effects of a surfactant that is pre

Inhibition of Oomycetes by the Mixture of Maleic Acid and Copper Sulfate.

Since the protective activity of the Bordeaux mixture against plant disease caused by oomycetes was discovered, copper compounds have been used for more than a century as an effective plant protection strategy. However, the application of excessive copper can cause adverse effects through long-term heavy metal accumulation in soils. Therefore, it is necessary to develop new strategies to reduce or replace copper in pesticides based on organic and low-input farming systems. Organic acids are eco-friendly. In this study, we tested the antifungal and anti-oomycete activity of maleic acid (MA) and

Acute copper sulfate poisoning in yearling beef cattle in Brazil.

In a herd of 70 crossbred beef calves (10-12-mo-old) managed extensively in Santa Catarina, Brazil, 14 animals developed clinical signs; 9 of the 14 died within 7 d of accidental ingestion of a copper sulfate (CuSO4) product. Affected calves were lethargic, anorectic, and had green diarrhea. A bag containing remnants of blue-green product was found near the carcasses; this product was later determined to contain 53% metallic copper (Cu; dry weight). Postmortem examinations were performed on 3 calves found dead; tissue samples were collected for histopathology and mineral analysis. Gross findin

Evaluation of the Effect of Copper Sulfate Exposure on Organs in Juvenile Rats.

Copper sulphate pentahydrate is widely used in agriculture to control bacterial and fungal diseases in various crops. Despite its extensive application, limited data exist regarding its potential toxic effects on juvenile rats following early-life exposure. In addition to oxidative stress and inflammation, copper overload may also trigger cuproptosis, a recently identified copper-dependent form of regulated cell death. This study aimed to investigate the histopathological, biochemical, and molecular effects of copper sulphate exposure on major organs in juvenile rats and to elucidate the assoc

Successful treatment of acute oral copper sulfate poisoning: a case report.

The incidence of copper sulfate poisoning varies across different regions. It is relatively rare in Western countries but more prevalent in South Asian nations, accounting for approximately 40% of all heavy metal poisoning cases. The majority of affected individuals are rural residents, with a mortality rate ranging from 14% to 36%. Copper sulfate poisoning often leads to gastrointestinal corrosion, intravascular hemolysis, hemolytic anemia, methemoglobinemia, and acute multi-organ dysfunction, often resulting in death due to delayed treatment. In June 2024, we successfully managed a case of a

Hemolytic activity of copper sulfate as influenced by epinephrine and chelating thiols.

AIM: To study the effects of epinephrine, homocysteine, and other complexing agents on the cytotoxicity of copper sulfate. METHODS: In vitro suspensions of human red cells incubated with cupric sulfate were used, and hemolysis was determined by extracellular hemoglobin. RESULTS: The hemolytic activity of CuSO4 (0.3 mmol.L-1) was enhanced by the presence of epinephrine and to a lesser extent by homocysteine, whereas D-penicillamine, succimer, and mercaptodextran reduced the copper-induced hemolysis. The latter 3 chelating thiols also reduced the copper-epinephrine-induced hemolysis. The plasm

Dinuclear Copper Sulfate-Based Square Lattice Topology Network with High Alkyne Selectivity.

Porous coordination networks (PCNs) sustained by inorganic anions that serve as linker ligands can offer high selectivity toward specific gases or vapors in gas mixtures. Such inorganic anions are best exemplified by electron-rich fluorinated anions, e.g., SiF62-, TiF62-, and NbOF52-, although sulfate anions have recently been highlighted as inexpensive and earth-friendly alternatives. Herein, we report the use of a rare copper sulfate dimer molecular building block to generate two square lattice, sql, coordination networks which can be prepared via solvent layering or slurrying, CuSO4(1,4-bib

Physiological changes associated with copper sulfate-induced nausea and retching in felines.

Nausea is a common disease symptom, yet there is no consensus regarding its physiological markers. In contrast, the process of vomiting is well documented as sequential muscular contractions of the diaphragm and abdominal muscles and esophageal shortening. Nausea, like other self-reported perceptions, is difficult to distinguish in preclinical models, but based on human experience emesis is usually preceded by nausea. Here we focused on measuring gastrointestinal and cardiorespiratory changes prior to emesis to provide additional insights into markers for nausea. Felines were instrumented to c

Effects of Copper Citrate and Copper Sulfate on Intestinal Health, Muscle Fiber Traits, and Antioxidant Capacity in Weaned Pigs.

Copper (Cu) is an essential trace mineral additive in weaned pig diets. Copper citrate (CuCit) and copper sulfate (CuSO4) are common feed additives, yet their tissue-specific effects at different inclusion levels remain unclear. In this study, ninety pigs (six pens per treatment, three pigs per pen) with an initial body weight of 7.71 ± 0.15 kg were randomly assigned to five treatments for 28 d: a basal diet, and the basal diet supplemented with CuCit or CuSO4 at 20 or 100 mg/kg. The results show that CuCit increased slow-twitch fiber proportion in longissimus dorsi muscle (p = 0.009), whereas

Physiochemical properties of copper doped calcium sulfate in vitro and angiogenesis in vivo.

Bone cements were prepared by mixing calcium sulfate and copper sulfate in various proportions. We examined physical and physicochemical properties of the copper doped calcium sulfates and the effects of the cements on angiogenesis in vivo. Rod shaped calcium sulfate crystals were visible by scanning electron microscopy in the cement that contained no copper sulfate, whereas plate-like crystals covered the surface of the cement with high copper content. After immersion of the cements in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 1 day, X-ray diffractometric analysis showed that gypsum precipitates had for
