Hyperfibrinolysis in a dog with strongyloidiasis.

A female entire dog with a history of travel from Eastern Europe, coprophagia, and absent prophylactic treatment against parasites, developed excessive haemorrhage during elective ovariohysterectomy, resulting in abandonment of the procedure. Physical examination and abdominal ultrasound were unremarkable. Routine blood analysis was unremarkable and there was no support for angiostrongylosis or the presence of common travel-associated infectious agents. Viscoelastic testing demonstrated hyperfibrinolysis and Baermann's faecal analysis documented Strongyloides stercoralis infection. They were t

Thyrotoxicosis in a dog induced by the consumption of feces from a levothyroxine-supplemented housemate.

A 9-year-old golden retriever dog was evaluated for polyuria, polydipsia, weight loss, and elevated serum thyroxine. Targeted questioning revealed that the dog was coprophagic and routinely ingested the feces of a dog that was treated with twice-daily levothyroxine. Clinical signs resolved and serum thyroxine decreased to normal levels in the affected dog with prevention of coprophagy.

Treatment of a retarded child's faeces smearing and coprophagic behaviour.

The daily rearrangement of a profoundly retarded child's routine shower was effective in eliminating his low-frequency faeces smearing and coprophagic behaviour during the late afternoon/early evening part of the day. The effects appeared to generalise such that both types of behaviour were reduced at other times of the day and night. These results are discussed in terms of a social learning framework. A model for analysing the motivations and reinforcing conditions for rectal digging, coprophagy, and smearing faeces is also presented.

Microbial Reconstitution Reverses Early Female Puberty Induced by Maternal High-fat Diet During Lactation.

Recent work shows that gut microbial dysbiosis contributes to the risk of obesity in children whose mothers consume a high-fat diet (HFD) during both gestation and lactation or during gestation alone. Obesity predisposes children to developing precocious puberty. However, to date, no study has examined how maternal HFD (MHFD) during lactation regulates the gut microbiota (GM), pubertal timing, and fertility of offspring. Here, we found that MHFD during lactation markedly altered the GM of offspring. The pups developed juvenile obesity, early puberty, irregular estrous cycles, and signs of disr

Toxocariasis in a Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

A boy affected by autism spectrum disorder was admitted for persistent high fever, without shiver, for two weeks. The boy referred to abdominal pain, in the first week of fever, and to mild anorexia in the last days before admittance to our hospital centre. The father reported that the boy suffered by geophagia and coprophagia and he has been going to a didactical farm (where he has been exposed to several kinds of animals) to improve his neuropsychiatric condition. Blood analysis shows severe eosinophilia and high levels of total IgE, and abdominal echocardiography showed hepatic lesions. Enz

Selective digesta retention and coprophagy in Brandt's vole (Microtus brandti).

Digestive performance, gut morphology and rate of digesta passage were measured in Brandt's voles (Microtus brandti) offered pelleted diets of low (25% neutral-detergent fibre) and high (38%) fibre content. Digestion coefficients of dry matter, crude fat, crude protein, energy and fibre were all significantly lower on the higher fibre diet. Although not significantly higher, dry matter intakes were more than maintained when extra cellulose was included in the diet, so that intakes of digestible energy were only 22% lower on the higher fibre diet. Total length and total gut tissue weight increa

Coprophagic café coronary.

A 74-year-old man who had been institutionalized for severe multiinfarct dementia was found dead in bed. He had a history of compulsive ingestion of food and other materials, including feces. At autopsy, a 65-g bolus of fecal material was impacted within the laryngopharynx, occluding the inlet of the larynx. This case demonstrates an unusual coprophagic variant of cafe coronary syndrome and emphasizes that demented individuals with pica are at risk of sudden death from ingestion of a wide variety of materials, including, but not limited to, food.

Entomophagy and coprophagy in undifferentiated schizophrenia.

Coprophagia or the ingestion of feces, considered to be a variant of pica, has been associated with medical disorders like seizure disorders, cerebral atrophy, and tumors and with psychiatric disorders like mental retardation, alcoholism, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, fetishes, delirium, and dementia. But entomophagy or the practice of eating live or dead insects as food by humans has only been reported as part of eating habits by some cultures in the world and not in association with any medical or neuropsychiatric disorders. Uric Acid Ingluviolith in a Budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus).

This clinical report describes an adult, female budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) diagnosed with an ingluviolith. The patient presented for intermittent regurgitation, and a palpable foreign body was present in the crop. Radiographs showed a radiopaque foreign body, and computed tomography showed an approximately 16 × 12 mm (length 3 width) structure in the crop with a soft tissue and focally mineralized center and a 2-3 mm-thick mineral-attenuating shell. An ingluviotomy was performed. The stone was first analyzed using polarized optical crystallography, a method that cannot analyze uric a

[A rare case of juvenile atrophy of the pancreas].

The case of a 4 month old Irish setter bitch is reported in the present paper, which showed a recurrent diarrhoea, polyphagia from the purchase of the dog at the age of two months. The dog was severely emaciated and treatment with Pancreon was not followed by any improvement. The total information acquired from the history of the dog and laboratory studies was clearly indicative of exocrine pancreatic deficiency. In spite of the satisfactory response to treatment with Tryplase (the faeces were restored to normal, but polyphagia and coprophagia continued to be present), it was decided to perfor

Snail coprophagy: the encounter filter, food preferences, and rat lungworm (Angiostrongylus cantonensis) prevalence.

Understanding the factors driving infection prevalence among host species is crucial for effective disease mitigation. Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the rat lungworm, causes neuroangiostrongyliasis and serves as an excellent model for studying infection dynamics across hosts. This study investigates the relative impact of encounter rates on A. cantonensis prevalence in snail hosts by assessing their coprophagic tendencies. Multiple-choice feeding assays were conducted with four snail species (Parmarion martensi, Laevicaulis alte, Lissachatina fulica, and Veronicella cubensis) differing in A. ca

A natural zoonotic giardiasis: Infection of a child via Giardia cysts in pet chinchilla droppings.

Here, we report a case of direct zoonotic transmission of giardiasis between a pet chinchilla and a human. Microscopic and molecular examinations of stool samples from a child and samples of chinchilla droppings revealed cysts/DNA of Giardia intestinalis. The transmission from the chinchilla to the child has been confirmed as coprophagous after the 1-year-old toddler ingested pet chinchilla droppings. Molecular analysis of the gdh gene from both hosts classified the G. intestinalis cysts into the assemblage B genetic group, which has been previously shown to be characteristic of both human and

Experimentally induced thiamine deficiency in beagle dogs: clinical observations.

Twenty-three 2- to 5-month-old Beagle dogs were fed a purified thiamine-deficient ration (2 to 3 micrograms of thiamine/100 g of ration) at a rate of 40 to 70 g/kg of body weight/day depending on age. Eleven dogs were used as principles, 6 as pair-fed controls, and 6 as ad libitum-fed controls. Controls were treated once a week with an IM dose of 300 micrograms of thiamine hydrochloride/kg of body weight. Three stages of clinical disease occurred in the principals: (i) an initial short (18.0 +/- 7.9 days) stage of induction, during which the dogs usually grew suboptimally, but were otherwise h

Rectocele in children: a case report.

Rectocele is an abnormal protrusion of the anterior wall of the rectum into the vagina. When symptomatic, it will typically cause obstructed defecation. It is almost exclusively found in females with rare reports in males and never been described in the literature in children younger than 18 years of age so far. We are presenting 3 cases of rectocele with obstructed defecation in the pediatric population. These children presented with the complaints of constipation along with refractory straining. They were diagnosed by defecography. Two were treated surgically and one conservatively. Surgical

Behavioural studies of faecal continence in the rat.

BACKGROUND: A behavioural animal model of faecal continence and/or incontinence would be of value in experimental studies of the mechanisms by which sacral neuromodulation can effect continence mechanisms in humans. AIM: The aim of this behavioural study was to establish whether the rat, an obligate coprophagic species, exhibits patterns of faecal continence. METHODS: Standard rat cages were modified to consist of a food and drink area, a nesting area and an empty latrine area. Three floor pressure pads were connected to hour meters to record the time spent in each area over the course of 4

The effects of increased dietary cellulose on the anatomy, physiology and behaviour of captive water voles, Arvicola terrestris (L.) (Rodentia: Microtinae).

1. Wild water voles and captives on high fibre diets had significantly longer and heavier digestive tracts (especially the caecum) than captives fed a low fibre diet. 2. Increasing dietary cellulose increased food intake, faecal output and metabolic rate, and decreased digestibility. Some but not all added cellulose was digested. 3. The passage of food through the digestive tract was significantly faster on the diet with added cellulose. 4. Coprophagy included eating directly from the anus and eating faecal pellets from the floor of the cage. The frequency of the latter type increased signific

Refection in rats fed on a sucrose-based, riboflavin-deficient diet.

1. Refection, resulting in an increased supply of riboflavin to riboflavin-deficient rats through coprophagy, was demonstrated on a sucrose-based diet when sensitive biochemical tests of riboflavin status were employed: these included measurements of NAD(P)H2:glutathione oxidoreductase (EC 1.6.4.2); succinate:(acceptor) oxidoreductase (EC 1.3.99.1) and NADH:(acceptor) oxidoreductase (EC 1.6.99.3). 2. The use of tail-cups to eliminate coprophagy, and hence refection, resulted in a more rapid and reproducible progress into severe deficiency. 3. The occurrence of refection on a sucrose-based diet
