Isolated fracture of the coracoid process associated with unstable shoulder.

We report on an unusual case where a seemingly trivial injury in a patient on immunosupressant therapy led to fracture of the coracoid and an unstable shoulder with a subscapularis tear. This was managed with open reduction and internal fixation. One year postoperatively, the patient had regained full function and range of motion.

Aneurysmal Bone Cyst of the Coracoid Process: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign yet locally aggressive lesions that can cause significant bone destruction. Involvement of the coracoid process is exceedingly rare, and the diagnosis is particularly challenging due to its atypical presentation. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 37-year-old male with right shoulder pain initially attributed to calcific tendinitis. Advanced imaging incidentally revealed an asymptomatic ABC of the coracoid process. Surgical management involved intralesional curettage and cavity filling with a biphasic calcium sulfate-hydroxyapatite b

Fractured coracoid process with acromioclavicular joint dislocation: A case report.

RATIONALE: Coracoid processes (CPs) fracture with acromioclavicular (AC) joint dislocation are extremely rare. This combined injury has brought many challenges to surgeons, and the mechanism underlying the injury is still not fully understood. There is no clear consensus on its treatment. PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we describe a CP fracture with AC joint dislocation in a middle-aged manual worker. DIAGNOSIS: Radiographs showed a fracture of the base of the CP and a third-degree AC joint separation. INTERVENTIONS: The patient was treated surgically with open reduction and internal fixation of t

Chronic osteomyelitis at the base of coracoid process: an unusual location.

Chronic osteomyelitis of the coracoid process is extremely rare with limited medical literature. This case reported a 17-year-old male who presented with persistent left shoulder pain and restricted range of motion for 2 months without a history of trauma. Imaging revealed an osteolytic lesion at the base of the coracoid process, confirmed by surgical biopsy. Initially, the patient underwent conservative management with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, but symptoms persisted, requiring surgical intervention involving decortication, biopsy, and fixation of the lesion using a screw. Histop

Classification and morphological parameters of the coracoid process in Chinese population.

INTRODUCTION: The coracoid process is an important anatomical structure of the scapula, which can be used as a landmark in the diagnosis and treatment of scapula related diseases, such as acromioclavicular joint dislocation, anterior shoulder instability, and coracoid fractures. The aim of this study was to classify the coracoid process according to morphology and to measure the morphological parameters of the coracoid process. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 377 dry and intact scapulae were collected and classified in terms of the connection between the shape of coracoid process and common

Acromioclavicular joint reconstruction by coracoid process transfer augmented with hook plate.

BACKGROUND: Various techniques have been reported for the treatment of chronic acromioclavicular (AC) joint separation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of surgical construction of coracoclavicular ligament using coracoid process transfer augmented with a hook plate fixation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients treated with coracoid process transfer augmented with a hook plate fixation for chronic type III and V AC injuries were retrospectively analysed in 2003-2009. The age of the patients ranged from 23 to 58 years with an average age of 41.6 years. The patients

The Latarjet coracoid process transfer procedure: alterations in the neurovascular structures.

BACKGROUND: The Latarjet coracoid process transfer procedure is an established, reliable treatment for glenoid deficiency associated with recurrent anterior shoulder instability, but changes in neurovascular anatomy resulting from the procedure are a concern. The purpose of our cadaveric study was to identify changes in the neurovascular anatomy after a Latarjet procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We obtained 4 paired, fresh-frozen cadaveric forequarters (8 shoulders) from the Maryland State Anatomy Board. In each shoulder, we preoperatively measured the distances from the midanterior glenoid r

Double clavicular fractures associated with scapular neck and coracoid process fractures.

We report a 38-year-old man with a combination of fractures in his left shoulder involving the middle and distal clavicle, the scapular neck, and the coracoid process, associated with scapulothoracic dissociation and an upper brachial plexus injury. The middle clavicular fracture was fixed with a plate, whereas the distal clavicular fracture was fixed with tension band wiring. Internal fixation for fractures of the scapular neck and coracoid process was not performed, as they were in an acceptable position after fixation of the clavicular fractures. At the 14-month follow-up, the range of moti

Base of coracoid process fracture with acromioclavicular dislocation in a child.

Fracture of the coracoid process is a rare injury. It can be easily missed when associated with other injuries to the shoulder girdle, for instance, acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) dislocation. Clinical attention is easily drawn to the more obvious ACJ dislocation, hence, the need for further radiological evaluation. We report an unusual case of fracture of the base of coracoid process associated with a true acromioclavicular joint dislocation in a 12 year old boy, with no separation of the epiphyseal plate, as one might expect. Treatment also remains controversial. Our patient underwent open re

Osteosarcoma in the coracoid process that mimicked an osteochondroma: A case report.

RATIONALE: Osteosarcomas are the most common primary malignant bone tumors in children and young adults; these tumors often affect the metaphyses of long bones such as the proximal humerus, proximal tibia, and distal femur. In contrast, osteosarcoma of the coracoid process is extremely rare. PATIENT CONCERNS: Herein, we describe a case of osteosarcoma affecting the coracoid process in a 40-year-old woman. The patient presented with shoulder pain, weakness, and an inability to raise her left arm. She had no previous record of shoulder injury and no significant family history. DIAGNOSES: Her C

ANATOMICAL STUDY OF THE MUSCULOCUTANEOUS NERVE IN RELATION TO THE CORACOID PROCESS.

OBJECTIVE: The authors performed an anatomical study on the path of the musculocutaneous nerve by dissecting 20 shoulders from 10 fresh adult cadavers. METHOD: The distance from the lower edge of the coracoid process to the point of penetration of the most proximal branch of the musculocutaneous nerve in the coracobrachialis muscle was measured and named the base. Starting from the inferomedial edge of the coracoid process, a second measurement was made to the point at which the lateral fascicle of the brachial plexus crossed the subclavius muscle, and was named the height. The third measurem

OSTEOID OSTEOMA OF THE CORACOID PROCESS: CASE REPORT WITH LITERATURE REVIEW.

Osteoid osteoma (OO) is the most common benign osteogenic bone tumor that predominantly affects young adults. OO is commonly localized in long bones, and therefore, it is rarely considered in differential diagnosis of chronic shoulder pain. We report a case of a 22-year-old male athlete, without history of previous trauma, who presented to our Department with chronic shoulder pain, which escalated during the night and responded to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug treatment. Considering these typical symptoms, diagnostic pathway was immediately directed towards OO, with magnetic resonance an

Recurrent shoulder dislocations secondary to coracoid process fracture: a case report.

Coracoid process fracture is easily missed in recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation. We report one such case in a 48-year-old man. Radiology revealed the Bankart lesion and the Hill-Sachs lesion only; the coracoid process fracture was discovered intra-operatively. The anatomy of the shoulder was restored by fixing the fragment to its scapular remnant with a 4-mm cannulated cancellous screw. The tip and the proximal fragment were reamed before inserting the screw. This fragment was routed with attached short head of biceps and coracobrachialis through the lower one third of the subscapularis,

Neglected acromioclavicular joint injury in coracoid process fractures: a retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Coracoid process fractures are frequently associated with injuries to the superior suspensory shoulder complex, including the acromioclavicular (AC) joint. However, concomitant AC joint injuries may be overlooked in the acute phase, potentially limiting treatment options. This study aimed to investigate the association between coracoid process fractures and SSSC injuries and to identify imaging-based predictors of concomitant AC joint injury. METHODS: A retrospective single-center cohort study including 60 patients with coracoid process fractures was conducted between February 2

Coracoid process transfer for anterior shoulder instability : a pectoralis minor sparing method.

The Latarjet procedure alters scapulothoracic motion by releasing the pectoralis minor insertion to the coracoid process and by changing the vector of the conjoint tendon. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of retaining the pectoralis minor insertion and a part of the conjoint tendon on to the remainder of the coracoid, and to evaluate the efficiency of the procedure in avoiding scapular dyskinesis, without concessions to glenohumeral stability. Since June 2017, a modification to the Latarjet procedure has been used in the treatment of posttraumatic anterior shoulder inst

The relationship of the lateral cord of the brachial plexus to the coracoid process during arthroscopic coracoid surgery: a dynamic cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: Arthroscopic coracoid decompression is performed for coracoid impingement and has also been advocated for arthroscopic repair of tears of the subscapularis tendon, placing the lateral cord or the musculocutaneous nerve at risk of injury. The dynamic relationship of the lateral cord to the coracoid while the upper limb is in abduction and traction in the shoulder arthroscopy position is not clear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the dynamic relationship of the lateral cord of the brachial plexus to the coracoid process during varying degrees of upper limb abducti

A Rare Case of Renal Cell Carcinoma Metastasis to the Coracoid Process.

A 51-year-old man attended the emergency department with lower left abdominal pain and fever for three days. He recovered and was discharged home with oral antibiotics and a CT colonoscopy organised as an outpatient. This had incidentally demonstrated a solid mass in the patient's left kidney in keeping with a renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The tumour was staged as pT2N0M0 and the patient underwent an uncomplicated open left radical nephrectomy. The RCC was classified as clear cell from histology. The patient was then kept on the biannual renal surveillance protocol. Six years after the operation

The X-Mas Box Osteosuture: A New Technique for Coracoid Process Fracture.

A fracture of the tip of the coracoid is a rare but challenging fracture. A surgical indication is required in case of a displaced fracture. Screws and suture anchors often do not offer a reliable fixation in the case of very small fragments. We describe our hardwareless technique that consists of an osteosuture with a 90-degree suture threads configuration that we called the x-mas box technique. This procedure is cost-effective and it provides stable fixation and low complications rate.

Coracoid process fractures: anatomy, injury patterns, multimodality imaging, and approach to management.

The coracoid process of the scapula is in close proximity to major neurovascular structures, including the brachial plexus and the axillary artery and vein. In addition, it serves as a major site of attachment for multiple tendons and ligaments about the shoulder. Isolated coracoid fractures are rare; however, they can be easily overlooked on routine shoulder radiographs. Importantly, when these fractures go undiagnosed, they are at high risk for nonunion. In this paper, we will review the relevant anatomy of the coracoid process, classification schemes for coracoid fractures, mechanisms of in
