How the fluctuations of water levels affect populations of invasive bivalve Corbicula fluminea (Müller, 1774) in a Neotropical reservoir?

Corbicula fluminea is an invasive bivalve responsible for several environmental and financial problems around the globe. Despite the invasive potential of this species, it suffers certain restrictions in lentic environments due to natural phenomena that significantly affect its population structure (e.g. water column fluctuation and sunlight exposure). The present study addresses how temporal decline of the water level in a Neotropical reservoir and exposure to sunlight affect the population structure of C. fluminea. Samplings were carried out twice in the reservoir of Furnas Hydroelectric Pow

Crude Corbicula fluminea carbohydrate extract attenuates cyclophosphamide-induced immune and intestinal injury in mice in association with gut microbiota remodeling.

Corbicula fluminea has been increasingly recognized for its nutritional and therapeutic potential. Corbicula fluminea carbohydrate extract (CFPS) is one of the active components of Corbicula fluminea. In this study, two low-molecular-weight oligosaccharide fractions were isolated from crude CFPS for preliminary physicochemical characterization, and the immunomodulatory activity and gut regulatory activities of crude CFPS were investigated, respectively. The results showed that the yield of crude CFPS was 4.97%. Two purified fractions (CFPS-1 and CFPS-2) were obtained with molecular weights of

Steam and Flame Applications as Novel Methods of Population Control for Invasive Asian Clam (Corbicula fluminea) and Zebra Mussel (Dreissena polymorpha).

Control strategies for established populations of invasive alien species can be costly and complex endeavours, which are frequently unsuccessful. Therefore, rapid-reaction techniques that are capable of maximising efficacy whilst minimising environmental damage are urgently required. The Asian clam (Corbicula fluminea Müller, 1774), and the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha Pallas, 1771), are invaders capable of adversely affecting the functioning and biodiversity of freshwater ecosystems. Despite efforts to implement substantial population-control measures, both species continue to spread an

Tissue distribution of inorganic mercury, methylmercury and cadmium in the Asiatic clam (Corbicula fluminea) in relation to the contamination levels of the water column and sediment.

The comparative experimental study of inorganic mercury (HgII), methylmercury (MeHg) and cadmium (Cd) bioaccumulation in the Asiatic clam Corbicula fluminea was based on a 14 days' exposure to the water column or sediment compartments, as initial contamination sources. For each contaminant and exposure source, a five-point concentration range was set up in order to quantify the relationships between the contamination pressure and bioaccumulation capacity, at the whole soft body level and in five organs: gills, mantle, visceral mass, kidney and foot. Hg and Cd bioaccumulation at the whole organ

Assessment of Lemna minor (duckweed) and Corbicula fluminea (freshwater clam) as potential indicators of contaminated aquatic ecosystems: responses to presence of psychoactive drug mixtures.

The pharmaceutical products are emerging pollutants continuously released into the environment, because they cannot be effectively removed by the wastewater treatment plants. In recent years, questions have been raised concerning the environmental risks related to these pollutants. The goal of this research was to evaluate the responses in Lemna minor after 7 days and in Corbicula fluminea after differing durations (1, 3, 7, and 19 days) of exposure to the psychoactive drug mixture (valproic acid, citalopram, carbamazepine, cyamemazine, hydroxyzine, oxazepam, norfluoxetine, lorazepam, fluoxeti

The fat and protein fractions of freshwater clam ( Corbicula fluminea) extract reduce serum cholesterol and enhance bile acid biosynthesis and sterol excretion in hypercholesterolaemic rats fed a high-cholesterol diet.

We investigated whether the fat and protein fractions of freshwater clam (Corbicula fluminea) extract (FCE) could ameliorate hypercholesterolaemia in rats fed a high-cholesterol diet. We also explored the mechanism and the components that exert the hypocholesterolaemic effect of FCE. The doses of the fat and protein fractions were equivalent to those in 30 % FCE. The fat and protein fractions of FCE, two major components of FCE, significantly reduced the serum and hepatic cholesterol levels. The fat fraction more strongly reduced serum cholesterol levels than the same level of total FCE. The e

A malacological survey in the Manso Power Plant, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil: new records of freshwater snails, including transmitters of schistosomiasis and exotic species.

INTRODUCTION: Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease of public health concern in Brazil, and the construction of hydroelectric dams, in addition to increasing permanent human settlement and tourism, has created conditions suitable for the establishment of mollusks that can transmit schistosomiasis. Such areas require a number of actions to prevent the establishment of schistosomiasis. This paper reports on a freshwater malacological survey carried out in the geographical area of the Manso Power Plant. METHODS: Mollusks were collected in 18 municipalities in the State of Mato Grosso between Fe

Specialized and Generalized Pollen-Collection Strategies in an Ancient Bee Lineage.

Iconic examples of insect pollination have emphasized narrowly specialized pollinator mutualisms such as figs and fig wasps and yuccas and yucca moths. However, recent attention by pollination ecologists has focused on the broad spectra of pollinated plants by generalist pollinators such as bees. Bees have great impact for formulating hypotheses regarding specialization versus generalization in pollination mutualisms. We report the pollination biology of six northern European species of an extinct tribe of pollen-basket-bearing apine bees, Electrapini, of early-middle Eocene age, examined from

Persistent contamination, limited accumulation: In-situ isotope tracing reveals fast thallium turnover in natural waters.

Although thallium (Tl) is one of the most toxic non-essential metals, environmental concern for aquatic organisms is often driven by its bioaccumulation rather than acute toxicity. However, current understanding of Tl bioaccumulation is derived largely from laboratory experiments, and little is known about its toxicokinetics under environmentally realistic field conditions. In this study, we employed an in-situ stable isotope tracing strategy to resolve the bioaccumulation kinetics of Tl in the freshwater bivalve Corbicula fluminea within an agricultural activity-impacted river. Characterization of Selenium Species in the Shijimi Clam.

Selenium is an essential trace element for humans and animals. Fish and shellfish are known to be rich in selenium and suppose to be an effective selenium source. In this study, we characterized the selenium species in the Shijimi clam (Corbicula japonica), which is a typical clam eaten in Japan. The Shijimi clam contains a relatively high concentration of selenium (3.5 µg-selenium/g-dry Shijimi). Approximately 30% of the total selenium in the Shijimi clam meat was extractable with water, while selenium in the Shijimi clam was hardly extracted with ethanol, chloroform and hexane. Influence of methylmercury from tributary streams on mercury levels in Savannah River Asiatic clams.

Average methylmercury levels in five Savannah River tributary streams, sampled 11 times over 2 years (0.170 ng/l), were nearly twice as high as in the Savannah River (0.085 ng/l). Total mercury levels in the tributaries (2.98 ng/l) did not differ significantly from the river (2.59 ng/l). All of the tributaries drained extensive wetlands that would be expected to support comparatively high rates of methylation. Mercury concentrations in Asiatic clams (Corbicula fluminea) collected from the discharge plumes of Savannah River tributaries (average of 0.044 microg/g wet weight) were significantly (

Bioaccumulation and partitioning of PFAS in an AFFF-impacted freshwater system: Invasive Asian clams as indicators of surface water contamination.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) introduced into the environment from historical aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) releases are persistent sources of ground- and surface water contamination. This study evaluated invasive Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) as biomonitors in the Little Neshaminy Creek watershed (Pennsylvania, USA), adjacent to two former military installations with documented AFFF use, to assess their ability to integrate spatial and temporal variability in PFAS exposure. Surface water, sediment, and clam tissue were analyzed for 44 PFAS compounds using liquid chromatogra

Seasonal trends of mercury bioaccumulation and assessment of toxic effects in Asian clams and microbial community from field study of estuarine sediment.

This study investigated seasonal trends in bioaccumulation potential and toxic effects of mercury (Hg) in Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) and microbial community. For this, a clam-exposure experiment was performed during summer, fall, and winter seasons in four different sites (HS1: control/clean site; HS2, HS3, and HS4: contaminated sites) of Hyeongsan River estuary, South Korea. Total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in whole sediments were highest at HS4 site during fall, sustained similar levels during winter, but decreased during summer. Unlike whole sediment, pore water reported h

Validation of biomarkers for impact evaluation of aqueous industrial waste in mesocosms.

The use of exposure biomarkers in measuring the impact of aqueous waste holds promise because such tools have short response times, are flexible in use and may give an indication about the type of pollution. However, their ecological significance has not yet been demonstrated. It is necessary to validate these responses under controlled conditions before using such biomarkers for biomonitoring. The TotalFinaElf company has developed a pilot scheme incorporating such controlled conditions. This pilot is a dynamic open mesocosm (16 channels 40 m in length supplied with river water). The research

Protective effects of water extract of clam on normal and CCl₄-induced damage in primary cultured rat hepatocytes.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of various concentrations and incubation times of water extract of clam (WEC) on glutathione, its antioxidant and the detoxification defense systems in normal and CCl₄-induced oxidative damaged primary rat hepatocytes. This study showed that when the hepatocytes were treated with WEC (0.14 ~ 1.68 mg/ml), the intracellular glutathione (GSH) levels, GSH/GSSG ratio, and the activities of GSH-related enzymes (GPx, GRd, and GST) were higher than those in the control at 24 or 48 hour treatments. However, the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) leaka

Immunometabolic signatures induced by silver sulfide nanoparticles in freshwater clams.

Aquatic ecosystems are increasingly at risk of exposure to silver sulfide nanoparticles (Ag2S NPs) through anthropogenic waste streams, with these particles traditionally considered less toxic due to their low solubility. However, emerging evidence suggests that the oxidative dissolution of Ag2S NPs can lead to the release of silver ions (Ag+), raising questions about whether Ag2S NP-induced toxicity can be explained by Ag+ release in aquatic environments. Herein, we assess the immunotoxicity of Ag2S NPs and Ag+ in freshwater clams (Corbicula fluminea) through an immunometabolic framework. Env

Freshwater Haplosporidian Diversity Associated With Invasive Non-Native Bivalves in the River Thames, Including Haplosporidium raabei Infecting Dreissena polymorpha.

Haplosporidians are protistan parasites of aquatic invertebrates. Described here is the first report of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha) parasite Haplosporidium raabei in the River Thames, London, UK. The prevalence of this protist in the upper tidal Thames, Richmond, was higher than previously reported in other studies from the UK and mainland Europe of infected D. polymorpha populations, with molecular detection of H. raabei DNA in all D. polymorpha specimens collected. Also reported is the molecular detection (DNA and RNA) of H. raabei in other invasive Thames bivalves: the Asian cla

Interest of a multibiomarker approach in the assessment of freshwater ecosystem quality: laboratory and field studies.

The aims of this study were to validate several biochemical parameters as biomarkers of pollution in the freshwater bivalve Corbicula fluminea and to underline the interest of a multibiomarker approach in environmental biomonitoring. The study was divided into a laboratory exposure to 4 doses of trichloroethylene, toluene, cadmium chloride or a coal tar fraction for 5 days and a field exposure for one week in 5 sites surrounding an industrial effluent outlet. Whatever the product was, parameters that exhibited significant responses were mainly parameters related to oxidative stress and compone
