[Postoperative prognostic factors in patients with spinal cord tumors].

This study is to analyse the prognostic factors of the patients with spinal cord tumors, consisted of intramedullary tumor (33 patients), multiple extramedullary tumor (15), solitary cauda equina tumor (22), and solitary extramedullary tumor (48). The significant prognosis of intramedullary tumors depends on the histopathological type, the tumor margin, and the extramedullary tumor extension. Multiple extramedullary tumors had a tendency to recur at the different spinal cord levels; poorer long-term clinical results than those with solitary spinal cord tumor. Solitary cauda equina tumor cases

Factors affecting banking quality of umbilical cord blood for transplantation.

BACKGROUND: The most important objective for cord blood banks is to store cord blood units of high quality, which is determined by total nucleated cells (TNCs) and CD34+ cells. Determining the factors affecting the stored life-saving cells would be beneficial to the field. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A total of 4930 cord blood units were collected between January 2007 and October 2009 and processed using a double extraction technique to sediment red blood cells with variable centrifugation time determined by the formula CT = KL - M, where CT is centrifuge time, K is 7.7227, M is 29.742, and L i

Risk Factors and Survival Analysis of Spinal Cord Stimulator Explantation.

OBJECTIVE: The treatment failure rate for spinal cord stimulators (SCS) remains unacceptably high, with reports of removal in up to 30% of patients. The purpose of this study is to perform survival and multivariate regression analyses of patients who have undergone SCS explantation in order to identify patient characteristics that may predict treatment failure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified 253 patients who underwent SCS placement using current procedural terminology codes in a private health insurance data base spanning 2003-2016. Patient demographics, opioid use, surgical indications

Spinal cord stimulation failure: evaluation of factors underlying hardware explantation.

OBJECTIVE: Spinal cord stimulation has been shown to improve pain relief and reduce narcotic analgesic use in cases of complex refractory pain syndromes. However, a subset of patients ultimately undergoes removal of the spinal cord stimulator (SCS) system, presumably because of surgical complications or poor efficacy. This retrospective study addresses the paucity of evidence regarding risk factors and underlying causes of spinal cord stimulation failures that necessitate this explantation. METHODS: In this retrospective single-center review, 129 patients underwent explantation of SCS hardwar

Factors influencing the difference between maternal and cord blood lead.

AIMS: To determine the factors that affect why some infants receive higher exposures relative to the mother's body burden than do others. METHODS: A total of 159 mother-infant pairs from a cohort of women receiving prenatal care at Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA from 1992 to 1995 provided blood samples at delivery for lead determination. The difference between cord and maternal blood lead concentration (PbB) and a dichotomous variable indicator of higher cord than maternal PbB, were examined as indicators of relative transfer. Women were interviewed twice during the pregnancy about l

Heterotopic ossification after spinal cord injury. Epidemiology and risk factors.

From 1981 to 1986 we treated 413 patients for acute spinal-cord injuries. We reviewed 356 patients followed for a minimum of two years of whom 71 (20%) developed heterotopic ossification around one or more joints. Heterotopic ossification occurred more often in male patients (23%) than in female (10%), and was most frequent in the 20- to 30-year age group. It was also more common after injuries of the lower cervical or thoracic spine than after those of the lumbar spine. Patients with severe neurological deficits (Frankel grades A and B) showed significantly more heterotopic ossification but t

Obstetric factors associated with cord blood gas values at birth.

Values of pH, base deficit and Pco2 in 885 unselected samples of umbilical blood collected at birth were related to pregnancy and delivery details. An increase in acidosis in both umbilical vein and artery was associated with placental abruption, maternal pethidine, pre-eclampsia, primigravidity, vaginal operative delivery for fetal distress and a long second stage of labour. Increased acidosis in arterial, but not venous, blood occurred with cord entanglement, vaginal breech delivery, postmaturity, high birthweight and a long first stage of labour. The relationship between obstetric factors a

Stridor caused by vocal cord malfunction associated with emotional factors.

We describe two adolescent patients in whom a disorder of the vocal cords associated with emotional factors resulted in acute episodes of stridor. Adduction of the vocal cords on inspiration and abduction on expiration was found on indirect laryngoscopy. The problem responded to either placebo treatment or psychotherapy. The similarity between vocal cord dysfunction presenting as stridor and that presenting as asthma is discussed. The importance of diagnosing these functional problems in children is emphasized in order to avoid unnecessary diagnostic procedures and hazardous treatment.
